- Second Wikimedia Technology Summit Brings Together Knowledge and Technology Experts
International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH) and the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit that operates Wikipedia and other free-knowledge projects, successfully concluded the 2nd Wikimedia Technology Summit at IIIT Hyderabad campus today. The one-of-a-kind event enabled discussions around developing the future of the internet, forging enduring alliances, and engaging in open discussions about the cohesion between technology and open access to knowledge. It was organized by IIITH’s Indic Wiki Project - an initiative funded by The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), and supported by the Government of Telangana, to enhance the online presence of Indic language encyclopedias. The second Wikimedia Technology Summit aimed to foster collaboration and innovation in the field of Indic language technology, with a particular emphasis on promoting open-source solutions and building a community of like-minded individuals and organizations. Speaking at the opening ceremony Prof Vasudeva Varma, Centre Head, Language Technologies Research Center (LTRC), IIIT - Hyderabad said “We have a large number of people speaking Indian languages but the amount of ‘useful’ digital content available in these languages does not represent our cultural and linguistic richness. It is our immediate need to make knowledge available in our languages. Crowd-sourced encyclopedias like Wikipedia make huge contributions to enhancing the knowledge, awareness, and rationality of people. This summit addresses important issues in enriching content and knowledge available in human languages and the ways to overcome challenges.” The event was kicked off on 2 March with a full-day mini-hackathon that brought together numerous open-source developers and programmers working on Indian Wikimedia projects to deliberate, create tools, and collaborate on MediaWiki to further the technology available for working on Indic Languages. Following the mini-hackathon, the Summit featured a series of talks, and panel discussions on 3 and 4 March on topics such as the future of open knowledge, the creation of sustainable knowledge systems, digitization of content, and digital humanities - all with a focus on Indic languages. It also featured keynote addresses by leading experts from the field of Indic language technology, learning researchers, and technology platforms. During her virtual keynote speech, Selena Deckelmann, Chief Product and Technology Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation, said "As we think about ways to increase digital adoption and participation, it is important for us to recognize the importance of local languages. Since multilingualism is a way of life, it has to be represented and celebrated!” She added, “So much good work is being done across the South Asia region that deserves recognition. This Summit is an opportunity to learn from and connect with each other on all of these efforts.” Over the course of the event, which brought together top researchers, open technology enthusiasts, Wikimedia volunteers and members of WikiClubs (a project that aims to form youth clubs at educational institutions to enable creation of free and open content) - over 150 attendees had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of topics to discuss best practices and set the future course of knowledge access in regional languages on the Internet. Shakir Shaikh HOD Hindi Department Poona college and other dignitaries were invited for Sahitya Sangam I would like to dedicate this award to my dear students, teachers and management who always made anything possible for me for the betterment of my education. It's a proud feeling with the name of Award...The name Aparajita itself is a big award..."Undefeated; Unconquerable" The journey of aspiring to inspire is here... Actually, this award took me into a flashback. After my B. Sc and Diploma in computers I was not having any mindset to join the teaching field. I was a Law student and, had an interest in Computer technology. So, I was looking for these fields to join. But, after marriage life changed and fields made me go for any job to sustain and I joined one of the good institutes as a computer teacher. And the journey started with making lessons and education more interesting as I was having a good hold on Technology and trying to give my best through making children participate in various Interschool, National level competitions where my students won good ranks and the best results made me proud and journey of continuation of this Teaching field was remain as the ultimate goal. Later, after seeing my Law background and technology-related knowledge, readiness to update and upgrade administration skills, and rapport with students, parents and management my post is changed from Teacher to Administrative coordinator which was the most struggling phase as my creative mind never let to stop others and my dream of doing something great never allowed me to be in any limitations. I was happy with my permanent job but was having one motive to give the best to society and the needful for the underprivileged society and the students to whom I can give my best I chose to be a Principal of a newly CBSE affiliated school in a rural area which is far away from my place. I never thought of money doing the job but yes my pure intention is to be creative, Innovative and my management allows me to do this giving me the satisfaction of work this job satisfaction lead me to be there in the rural area and my school's name in the best schools list. I got many awards for this noble work and the school's name and my name is taken with pride by the education dept, parents, and society. My school was the one that got awarded with "Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar" at Taluka, District and State and represented for the National level too. We hosted the 50th Taluka Level Science Exhibition which was a benchmark exhibition for all.Our school has been declared Maharashtra's first school with Space Education Lab. So, it shows that rural areas and motivated like-minded people can make education more effective by creating excellence through inculcating values and nurturing creative minds. 'Aprajita award' the name itself has many meanings & the major one is 'The one who can't be defeated ' & which truly suits to Mrs. Renu Patil & My mom . She was awarded many a times as her journey is really aspiring to inspiring one, for this time she intended to take me along with her & I first time attended her award ceremony & it was an amazing moment to see your mother receiving award & been appreciated for her hard work & you cheering her from the audience. She's my guide,my inspiration & many more & not only for me but for all those who had been with her & in her proximity. - NCC JUO Aditi Patil (SY BTech Biotechnology, GV MAVLANKAR Shooting Championship Winner) This Aparajita award is for those who never stop for others... Always motivate the woman to keep her goals, and same I am trying to make it. Aparajita - Women of the award is an honour for me and which tells me and will remind me.."This is for your Growth oriented, strong, adventurous, spendthrift, freedom-loving, restless, spiritual, , Energetic, Curious, Visionary, Magnetic, and Expansive journey...The journey of Aspiring to Inspiring. - What good wishes people can do to us, nothing else can do more: Sonu Sood
When you are helping others, sleep is the last thing that comes to your mind said Sonu Sood while in conversation with Ms Shubhraa Maheshwari, Chairperson of FLO Hyderabad Chapter at a tete-a-tete, FLO Hyderabad organised at Hotel The Park in Somajiguda on Mahashivratri evening. Giving her opening remarks, Ms Shubhraa Maheshwari described him as India's modern Karna for charity. Karna not only did he donate whatever was asked for, but he also went beyond the common man's way of thinking to show his generosity, Shubhraa said. Sonu Sood is a hero with a golden heart. Speaking on work-life balance he does, he said if you want to help somebody you should not worry about time. We don’t get time, but we must adjust and manage it, he said responding to a question. I get requests at the shooting locations too. Even after packing up and all leaving the shooting set, many times I end up spending time till late at night as film industry workers approach me with problems of their near and dear, he shared. Speaking about time management, he narrated an incident. When he returned home from work in the middle of the night, he found a girl from Kolkata waiting to meet him. On meeting her he came to know that she had some neurological issues. Then he made an arrangement for her to stay in Mumbai that night and that midnight itself, he sent a message to one of the famous neuro-specialists in Mumbai. To his surprise, the doctor, who he didn't know, also responded by 2 am and in the morning the girl was sent to the hospital. She spent the next five months in the hospital and now living healthy, he shared. In such situations we don't mind what and how much time we spend, he added. If you want to help you must forget time, he added. 95 per cent of the people who joined us in this mission are not known to us and we never met them. But, they all came forward to help us, he said. We got connected to 7.5 lakh people during and after the pandemic. We performed 29 liver transplants and 45 kidney transplants, he said. The pandemic is over long back but still, people approach him with their problems. There is always a kilometer-long queue at his house. I was alone when we started this journey, but today many joined us and helped us. We are able to help people in such large numbers due to collaborative help, Sonu Sood informed. We can't help or feed so many. Our resources are limited. But we don't leave any stone unturned to help people, he said. Though the journey continues, what is next, what are his future plans? Responding to this he said, 'we are working on setting up Old Age Homes. One is coming up at Shirdi. Another will come up in Telangana. Work on this is started in Punjab. We are exploring UP. Our earnest hope and desire are to see that every state will have an Old Age Home and a free School in near future, he said. There are many who do Cheque Charities. But, a personal touch is very important. A girl who was suffering from a lung problem was airlifted to Hyderabad from Nagpur. Her brother accompanied her. But, unfortunately, we couldn't save her, and subsequently, her brother too succumbed. She was working in Indio. The parents lost their both siblings. So make it a point to visit their parents in Nagpur whenever it is possible. That is the personal touch I prefer, he said. On Politics he said, it is true that many politicians and political parties tried their best to lure me. The offers were so tempting but nobody could refuse them. But, my interest is elsewhere. No doubt that I wanted to associate with a political outfit which does a lot of services to society. But, as of now, I don't have any interest in jumping into politics. I have much more to do in my chosen film industry. He spoke about his upcoming film Fateh, which will be an action-thriller. It is about Cyber Crime and how many innocent people are falling victim to it. Based in Punjab, Delhi, the film which might be released by end of the year will highlight how common people are exploited. It is a film of ‘One man’s war against India’s hidden enemy’, he announced. While many joined hands with him in his endeavour, how was the response from his own industry? Replying to this question he said many in the film industry did their bit in their own way and encouraged me a lot he said. I have strong connections to Hyderabad. My wife is a Telugu woman, he shared. Whatever I have achieved, I have learnt working down south, Sonu Sood shared. I will continue to do what I am doing till my last breath. What good wishes people can do to us, nothing else can do more, he concluded his interaction.
