  • Confessions of a Corporate Lawyer: Arunima Jha

I have always envisioned fast-paced city life, magnificent departments, expensive dinners with Clients, just like Harvey Specter from Suits? Caffeine-fueled nights from plush offices overlooking Marine Drive. But what is it like? The horror stories of all-nighters and weekends spent on contractual fine prints and expectations to achieve more than is humanly possible. So if you wanna experience the sexier side of international clients working on innovative projects, you need to indulge in painstaking due diligence, proofreading and it does get frustrating but you have to present your best self. So, if you ask me to what degree of Harvey Specter I have achieved? My answer would be: Well, we both got great looks but my job isn't that dramatic always like it is at Pearson Specter Litt. I do have moments of drama but it isn't that frequent. These are business-critical situations requiring business-critical advice. These might range from anti-bribery, corruption issues to employment disputes and that's where a corporate lawyer is brought into the picture to assess if there are any legal risks involved and how to mitigate those risks, to make sure it doesn't happen again. As a corporate lawyer, you are expected to familiarize yourself with documentation drafting and formal submissions. Most of my time at work requires me to respond to e-mails and attend back-to-back meetings. Sometimes you won't even get time to have lunch away from your desk. I honestly believe that life isn't black and white. There are always ethical versus yoke kinds of issues at work but if you're passionate enough you will see your work bringing some of the most meaningful changes. Happy Monday! • Jemimah Rodrigues, the hockey player , and a bunch of Multitasking women cricketers

The most shocking thing in Indian women's cricket this year was the omission of Jemimah from the World Cup 2022 squad. Jemimah Rodrigues is a popular name in the international cricket circuit. The Indian has amassed runs not just in international cricket, but also in the franchise leagues all across the globe including the English Premier League, The Hundred and Women's Big Bash League . She was in sublime form in the WBBL 2022. This is why everyone expected her to be in the squad. But the board had different plans. With the team going ahead to play the series against Kiwis, a player of high calibre omitted from the team would have dropped their confidence. But not something of this sort happens, if you are Jemi. Courtesy: a Twitter account of Female Cricket Stars The amazing cricketer shocked everyone when she put the bat on for a while and grabbed a hockey stick in her hands. And to everyone's surprise, her wrists work equally good with a hockey stick, just like they do with a cricket bat. The batter India heavily depended on, scored 3 goals in the first match playing for Uncle's Kitchen United in the Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana Rink Tournament. Her amazing performance in hockey might be new to many, but few know that she did represent Maharashtra for hockey in U-16. It is amazing to see someone extremely good in two sports. But Jemimah is not the only player to do so. As they say, women are better at multitasking, many players have done it earlier too. Aussie skipper Meg Lanning has played hockey at the national level playing for Victoria. The Aussie wicketkeeper and swashbuckling opener Alyssa Healy also played hockey for Victoria. Her dream was to play hockey for Australia in Olympics, but she took the right decision by choosing cricket eventually. While the above examples are of the women who have played one sport internationally, and others at different levels, there are also examples of sportswomen who have represented their country in two or more sports. One of the finest batters in the world Suzie Bates has represented the Kiwi Basketball team in Beijing 2008 Olympics. Another Kiwi player Sophie Devine played for the Kiwi hockey team along with representing Blackcaps, and all of this she did overcoming the type 1 diabetes she had. Another cricketer who represented their team in hockey as well is Janette Brittin , who did it 3 decades earlier now. Speaking about the most popular sport, cricket makes way only after football. To the surprise of many, some players have represented their countries in the two most popular sports. Ellyse Perry is a name known to every person who watches cricket. One of the best all-rounders to ever play women's cricket, she is a popular sports star of the game. The heartthrob of cricket fans is the only player to have represented her country in FIFA and ICC cricket World cups. Apart from Perry, the fast bowling sensation from Pakistan, Diana Baig has represented Pakistan for football and cricket, and she continues to do so even today. If one speaks of the hard hitters of the game, Deandra Dottin is a name that comes to everyone's mind. The hard hitter is knowing from scoring huge hundreds, and hitting long sixes. Little does everyone know, that the batter has represented Barbados in a flurry track field and athletic events. Overall she has 9 medals representing Barbados in U-20, 7 of which are gold. In Caribbean championships, she has won medals in Shotput, Javelin throw and Discuss Throw too. No wonder she launches the ball long back in the stands. When it's difficult to excel in one sport, these women and many others have made their presence felt in more than one sport, eventually turning to the best sport cricket. Now they are happily contributing to their team in cricket with either their performance or as Making their mark as a skipper. Jemimah might be playing hockey for fun again, but her resurrection will be a tale to tell for people. Breaking the stereotypes, these women have turned out to be an inspiration. And in the process, they never know the number of people they would inspire while following their passion. If true, we should not be surprised to see many sports stars coming in the future playing multiple sports. • Senior Rahane, and Junior Men in Blue skipper star in Ranji trophy

With so much of ifs and buts, finally, the Ranji trophy, the actual backbone of Indian cricket was scheduled. If domestic cricket is the empire, Ranji Trophy is the seat of the throne of this empire. And the first day of the most awaited domestic season of Indian cricket was made special by many players playing for their respective teams. But the two performances which brought happiness to Indians were the centuries of the only captain to breach Gabba in 33 years, Ajinkya Rahane , and the U-19 skipper who led Junior Men in Blue to the 5th world cup title. Continuing his peak form from the U-19 world cup, Yash Dhull played his natural game. Making his debut match in the Ranji trophy memorable, he scored a magnificent century. Coming in as an opener, he played sensibly from one end when at the other end 2 wickets fell in quick succession. From 2 down for 7 for Delhi, he then batted with Nitish Rana and Jonty Siddhu to reach the landmark. His century, and useful contribution of 71 runs, and Lalit Yadav's not out innings of 45 runs have led helped Delhi to end the day for 291/7. Yash Dhull is one of those players who doesn't get affected by the wickets falling from one end. He did that in the World cup too in the first match against South Africa, as well as in the semi-final against Australia. With the century on his Ranji Trophy debut, Dhull made it to the elite list of Sachin Tendulkar , Prithwi Shaw and a few others who had achieved this feat earlier. While on one hand, the junior skipper made his impact, the senior member of Men in Blue in red-ball cricket, Ajinkya Rahane's return to form was a sight to behold for Indian fans. In the past few weeks, his form was a matter of concern for India. Although he had small but important cameos for the team, barring his hundred at MCG, there were no big scores from him. The almost fixed members of the India red ball team Rahane and his counterpart Cheteshwar Pujara were given an ultimatum by BCCI and were told to be back to Ranji trophy squads for the moment. And a century coming from the man who had a century at Lord's, had kind of rejuvenated the hearts of Indian cricket lovers. His coach had already stated that Rahane was looking terrific in the nets. And proving him right, Jinx broke his jinx of low scores and reached the three-figure mark. Playing against Cheteshwar Pujara' s Saurashtra, with his team losing 3 wickets Rahane and Sarfaraz Khan stood firm and launched the attack on former Ranji trophy winners. It was a treat to watch the crunchy drives coming from the middle of Rahane's bat. The innings displayed his confidence and his elegance, and he would like to carry forward the confidence ahead for the entire season as well as for India when he gets to play again. Also in the same match, it will be a treat to watch if Pujara scores a century and finds his form back. While India rejoices the fact that the star in making Dhull made it to a remarkable century, fans know he has a long way to go. Meanwhile, the star of Indian middle order particularly in tests, the only captain to breach the historic Gabb a, and the man having centuries in all the SENA countries, Ajinkya Rahane's return to form is a great sign, considering his experience, considering what he has done for the Men in Blue and what he can do even further. Therefore, one would wish Yash Dhull all the best to continue his form and make it to the senior team. And the team would wish Rahane and Pujara get back in the groove yet again and continue their form in Ranji, eventually, to dominate the world-class bowlers yet again to win India matches. • Rajvardhan Hangargekar- The star of U-19 to play under MS Dhoni

In 1983, an Indian pacer who consistently bowled with the speed of 140+, and hit the balls out of the park while batting won Men in Blue the first World cup, breaking the West Indian domination. After the legendary Kapil Dev, however, India failed to produce an all-rounder who could bowl with consistent 140+ speeds, as well as score some crucial runs with the bat. India did witness fast bowling all rounder s in the form of Irfan Pathan, Sourav Ganguly, Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, but their consistent speeds were less. It took India a long time when in the U-19 world cup 2022, Rajvardhan Hangargekar grabbed the attention of the cricketing world with his consistent speed, disciplined line length and the long sixes he hit. Simon Doull was so impressed with the youngster, that right in the first match of the world cup, he referred to Hangargekar as one of the rarest Indian bowlers who could bowl with consistent speeds and great discipline. Watching him, Irfan Pathan predicted that IPL franchises would look forward to having Hangargekar in their team and that he had a good chance to go above his base price. And his predictions were turned right when the U-19 stalwart was selected in one of the most consistent and successful teams of IPL. He entered the whistle podu family at 1.5 crore INR. It was a very special moment for Hangargekar, whose father was a huge fan of CSK. On the one hand, he was extremely happy to be a part of the team his father loved the most, on the other, he was left teary-eyed to see that his father was no more to witness this alive. Hangargekar, who lost his father in 2020 due to covid said " I'm sure wherever my father is, he will be extremely proud to see me play under the guidance of his favourite player for his favourite team". Hailing from Tuljapur, a town known for its religious heritage in Maharashtra, the youngster was a renowned name in the tennis ball leagues in his town. Fortunately, he was spotted by a few people who were impressed with his performance. In the 2016-17 session, the strength and conditioning coach Tejas Metapurkar was impressed him when Hangargekar was playing U-16 for Maharashtra. The former had a latter huge impact on the latter, as he told him to shift to Pune for better fitness sessions, but when the youngster faced later huge a few issues, Metapurkar let him stay at his residence in Pune. Metapurkar always saw the dedication of Rajvardhan and requested Mohan Jadhav(who also coached Ruturaj Gaikwad) to coach him. Initially, when both of them checked the speed of Hangargekar, he clocked 127, but in the year to follow, he increased it to 10 kmph more, which impressed both of them yet again. Continuing his impressive run, he went on to play for Maharashtra senior team in the domestic circuit, and the Men in Blue U-19 team. Apart from his bowling, he is a pinch hitter who can send the ball back 20 rows back in the stands. When U-19 cricket team members of India were asked who can hit the longest sixes, most of them mentioned Hangargekar. His contribution to the Asia cup was great. Against Pakistan, when India was in trouble, he came in and hit some crunchy shots to reach a decent total. In the encounter against Ireland in the World cup too, he hit 5 sixes in quick succession to power Men in Blue to 300+ runs. He is one of those players who contribute to the team in some form or the other always. CSK have loved players like these. Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and now Hangargekar, they have loved to have Indian fast bowling all-rounders. His addition has proved to be a boon to them increasing their batting depth till number 10 if they play him in the eleven. After playing for Maharashtra in the yellow jersey together, he will get a chance to play with Ruturaj Gaikwad in the most loved and most popular yellow jersey in franchise cricket. One doesn't know when he will get a chance to play, but players like him, Bawa, Yash Dhull getting selected by the IPL teams is something to watch. Everyone would be keen to see Hangargekar prove his worth both as a bowler as well as a batter, and if he does, maybe in a few years to come, he just might be the star India was looking forward to. It was an absolute honour to be part of a conversation featuring such talented and enlightened people. Education beyond syllabus is crucial for the current and upcoming generations as theirs is a world that's constantly changing and growing. My basic education is in computer science. I had a passion for writing but I always thought of it as my hobby and never imagined that it could become my full-time career To become a published author, I had to polish my writing skills and learn about the entire process. • First series win for India in 2022, and Redemption from South Africa series

The West Indies tour of India didn't go as per plan for the West Indies . But it was a confidence booster to the Indian team which won their first series of 2022. The year the first month of the year was disheartening for the fans, with losing the two test matches and eventually the first chance to win a test series in South Africa, followed by being whitewashed by the Protea team. Fortunately for the Indian team, the series with the Caribbean team brought the series of victories back. Both the series are incomparable, with the Protean one as overseas series, and the Caribbean as the home advantage for Indians. But considering the domination of Caribbean players in shorter formats, the series win was made special. In both, the series, unexpected happened. Both the visiting sides, who were expected to give a tough fight to the hosts, did not show a glimpse of it. Fortunately for India, the latter was the one where they were the hosts. The series did start with the micro trouble from Wuhan entering the Men in Blue camp. With few people players and support staff testing positive, the team had to be chosen with more alternatives like Deepak Hooda, Prasidh Krishna simlar to the selection of Mohammed Siraj , Washington Sundar Shreyas Iyer , Shardul Thakur before our memorable test wins. The good side of the team was the inclusion of youngsters in the squad. Also another positive for India was the performance of a few of their players who were not performing earlier. The resistance showed by the middle order in all three matches was better, if not commendable compared to the earlier series. Iyer managed to overcome his short ball fears, eventually scoring good innings in the final match. Mr 360 of India, Surya got in good touch, scoring the highest 104 runs for India in the series. Deepak Hooda did manage to take India to a victory in the first match with composed innings. Deepak Chahar grabbing the opportunity to contribute with the bat as well as the bowl was a very big positive yet again for Men in Blue, who had witnessed his heroics in Colombo earlier, and in the ultimate match of the Protea series, where he just fell short of winning the match for India. Bowlers contributing more than the batters in the series has been a common phenomenon for Men in Blue for the past year. These happened on a subcontinent pitch in Motera. Prasidh Krishna made an impact yet again when he was bowling in the right areas rewarded his team wickets, and him the "Man of the series" award. Siraj continued to impress everyone yet again. Chahal did his part to choke the runs and pick the big man Polly. Sundar proved his selection as an all-rounder is worth it. A chance for Kuldeep Yadav was heartening to see for Indian fans. And he caught upon it. Although the combination of kul -cha was not witnessed together, the chance given to both of them might help both of them regain their confidence. India missed the elegance of the best batter in the world. Indians eagerly waiting for Virat's 71st century were disappointed to see their star struggling for a bit. This became the only series after 2015 where the King failed to score a half-century. But the energy he displayed on the field, and him helping the skipper Rohit Sharma to set the field was a moment many stored as their mobile wallpapers. Unfortunately for the media and its sources, the news of the rift between the two was proven wrong yet again. Speaking of Hitman, the man continued his winning record as a captain in the limited over format. His rotation of bowlers was spot on, so were his field placements and the reviews. Barring the few decisions like unnecessary experimentation of Rishabh Pant as an opener, when already 5 players are fighting for the opening slot everything went well for the Indian skipper. Again, one would have loved to see the future star Ruturaj Gaikwad opening for Men in Blue, but the combination was not possible due to the availability of a lot of options. Nevertheless, the series win was a confidence booster for India. It redeemed the memory of the South African series where Men in Blue were whitewashed. Hitman's captaincy also compensated for Kl Rahul's captaincy stint. The series showed a new bunch of players, all of them proving again how they could be useful for the team. If this team does not become overconfident like the South African series, they would win the T20 series too. With the rising confidence, one can hope that happens. Also, along with that one can hope our beloved king Kohli returns to form displaying his flurry of eye-pleasing shots in this series.
