- U-19 World Cup: Juniors qualify for the Quarter Finals
Winning their second consecutive match in the tournament, junior Men in Blue qualified for the quarter-finals of the U-19 world cup. They did it by emerging victorious in the encounter against Ireland with a huge margin of 174 runs. They continued from where they left in the encounter against South Africa. In this match, however, the most important thing was the contribution of maximum team members. Choosing to bat first, Men in Blue started playing cautiously against the irregular variations of the ball. After having the idea of the variation, both the openers launched the attack on Irish bowlers. With the highest run-getter of the Asia cup, Harnoor Singh scoring 88 runs, and Angriksh Raghuvanshi scoring run a ball 79 runs, they stitched a good partnership putting the Irish bowling lineup under pressure. Followed by the openers, Raj Bawa played a cautious knock of 42 runs. Further, Nishant Sandhu, the stand-in skipper in absence of Yash Dhull played with an almost strike rate of a hundred scoring 36 off 34 deliveries. But the star of Indian batting was Rajvardhan Hangargekar . The all-rounder from Maharashtra, who impressed everyone with his bowling in the first match, played a quickfire knock of 39 runs off 17 balls, hitting 5 towering sixes and a boundary. The combined effort of top and middle order, and the fireworks by Hangargekar helped India cross the 300 run mark and the Men in Blue set a target of 308 runs. None of the Irish batters could stand the Indian attack for too long. While chasing the target, barring Joshua Cox and Scott Macbeth, who respectively scored 28 and 32, none of the Irish batters played their role. The Indian bowlers did their role to perfection. With Sangwan, Tambe and Gautam picking a couple of wickets each and Hangargekar, Kumar and Ostwal scalping 1 each, the Irish batters could only reach 133 runs. Hangargekar, yet again impressed with his consistent speed and accuracy. The Irish innings came to an end with a magnificent catch by Raj Bawa who ran a distance to complete almost a diving catch dismissing Muzamil Sherzad. With the catch, junior sealed the victory with a huge margin of 174 runs. The victory sealed the spot of Men in Blue juniors in the quarter-finals of the tournament. They still have a league stage game to play against Uganda, post which they will know their knockout match opponent. Nevertheless, the skilful juniors can be proud of what they have done, and we wish they continue their winning streak in the matches to come, resulting in the 5th title coming to India. - An year to the historic Gabba breach
Exactly a year ago, the Indian team created history by breaching the Australian fortress, Gabba, which was undefeated for 32 long years. A team full of youngsters, with the most experienced players either injured or on leave, defeated the full strength Australian squad one of the finest test matches ever played in the history of the game. The nail-biting test match full of the thrill was eventually hailed as one of the best test matches to have ever played. The entire series was a treat for the fans, and it added to the beauty of the longest format of the game. The first match was a match to forget for Men in Blue , when they were bundled out for a mere 36 runs, creating an unwanted record of the lowest total for their team ever. What made the matters worse was, India's match-winner and the best batsman in the world Virat Kohli was supposed to leave back home post the first match. Furthermore, India's spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the tour due to injury. After the humiliating loss, India had to proceed in the series without their best batter and best bowler. And boy, they did it in style. In one of the finest tales of resurrection, stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane led the team from front scoring a magnificent century at MCG, and Men in Blue levelled the series answering the critics who expected them to get white washed 4-0. They followed it by pulling out an almost impossible looking draw at SCG, when Ravichandran Ashwin and the both severely injured, batted for 250 balls to result in a draw. It was in this match when Australian skipper Tim Paine gave a challenge to Ashwin saying "Come to Gabba, Ash". And the entire Indian team accomplished the challenge in style. With only 3 experienced members of the test team, the task was difficult. But the remaining 8 youngsters displayed immense fighting spirit and helped the team to its victory, making Ajinkya Rahane the only captain to beat Australia at the Gabba in 33 years. Batting first, Australia posted a good total of 369 runs, courtesy a century by Marnus Labuschagne , half-century by skipper Paine and valuable contributions by Steve Smith , Green, Wade. For India, it was the three debutants Shardul Thakur , Natarajan and Sundar who scalped 3 wickets each. The bowling lineup of India was so inexperienced, that the overall matches test played by all the bowlers combined was lesser than each of the Aussie bowlers. It was evident from the fact that Mohammad Siraj, who was just playing his 3rd test, was leading the pace attack. Yet the inexperienced team did a good job to restrict Aussie to 369. It was now the batters turn to put on a good score. There were some handy knocks from Rohit, Rahane, Pujara, but India was in trouble with 6 down for a mere 186 runs. It was at this time, when the two debutants , Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar launched an attack on experienced Aussie bowlers. With former scoring 67 and later 62, both hit their maiden half-centuries and stitched a crucial partnership of 123 runs. Both of them displayed their array of shots, particularly Thakur impressing everyone with his cover drive and square cuts. Resultant of their resistance, India posted a total of 336 runs. The Aussies in the second innings were bundled for 294. For India, Mohammad Siraj registered his first five-for in tests, an emotional one for him whose father had passed away 3 weeks ago. Apart from Siraj , it was Thakur yet again, who scalped 4 crucial wickets. Australia set a target of 328 runs at their fortress, where the previous highest successful chase was 236 runs. To set a new record, India started, but only after the first over, when India was at 4/0 the rain gods showed their existence. With still a probable chance of rain on the 5th day, India required 324 runs to create history. A billion people woke up at 4:30 in the morning to witness history in the making. Fortunately, with rain gods showing mercy, Indian batting started. Everyone was making assumptions whether Indians will go for a victory, or would try to save the match for a draw. But showing no mercy on the Aussie bowlers, Shubhman Gill showed what the Indians were playing for. It was a battle between a youngster and the experienced line-up of Starc, Hazelwood and Cummins. He eventually fell 9 runs short of a well-deserving century, but he had done the job for his team. When Hazelwood and Cummins started to breathe fire with the old ball, the modern Wall of Indian, Cheteshwar Pujara stood like a rock on the crease. Along with the skipper Rahane, the experienced duo held the crease for some time before Rahane fell. But Pujara was rock solid on one end. It almost looked impossible to get this man out. When the Aussie bowlers targetted Indian batters on the backfoot with the short bowl, Pujara courageously took blows on his body, to save his wicket. His act of bravery was lauded by critics and the experts of the game. He was joined by Rishabh Pant, who played his natural game. Every single cricket fan enjoyed the duo of ice and fire in the form of Pujara and Pant playing together to create history. The beauty of test cricket was to see Pujara defend the ball, and Pant sending the ball in stands at the same time in the crease. After playing a vital inning of 56, Pujara received applause when he was dismissed and was travelling back to the pavilion. Then joined Mayank Agarwal , who used his opening experience to play the new ball after 80 overs. Mayank fell but played cautiously to remove the shine of the ball. At the point where all three results seemed possible, Sundar joined Pant. The two left-handers were on the crease with a required run rate of around 6 in the remaining 11 overs. When they slowed down a little bit, it looked like the match would probably result in a draw. But when 42 were required off 36 balls, a classic 'Nataraj shot' by Sundar off a short ball Mitchell Starc brought India back in the game. He followed it by a boundary, putting additional pressure on the Aussies. But Sundar's wicket brought a ray of hope for Aussies, which was denied by the heroics of Rishabh Pant , who smashed boundaries and comfortably sealed the historic win for India breaching the Australian fortress for the first time after 1989. Australia didn't just lose the match, it was their ego at Gabba that was broken. A young India, without the senior players, achieved created history and achieved a feat that no other teams did. The calm and composed Ajinkya Rahane led to a triumph over the aggressive Aussies. With the match, India won the Border-Gavaskar series consecutively for the second time on Australian soil. Resurrecting from 36 all out in Adelaide, Ajinkya Rahane's India rose like Pheonix from the ashes and conquered Australia. The victory was special, but more special was the contribution of youngsters like Gill, Pant, Thakur, Natrajan, Siraj, Vihari and others. The fighting spirit displayed by Indians was commendable, it made a way for other teams to believe that a win in Australia is possible. The entire series was a treat to the fans. A well-fought series, with both the teams playing their heart out, was called "The ultimate test series". The series was an example of leadership, resurrection and fighting spirit. This is why the breach at Gabba will always be written in golden words in the history of Men in Blue as well as test cricket. - Virat Kohli : The captain who brought back glory to test cricket steps down
The year 2022 didn't start well for the Indian cricket team. They lost the two test matches against the Protea team, after winning the boxing day test convincingly. If only the fans knew, the worst was yet to come. The sudden declaration by Virat Kohli to step down from test captaincy came as a shock to the fans. It's probably the worst news of 2022, and it came right in the second week of the year. The king stepping down as the captain of Men in Blue is bad, not just for the Indian team, but also for test cricket. The energy and passion which he brings to the field are truly amazing. He will continue his services as a batter, but he as a leader was the best to see. As a leader of the team in the longest and the oldest format of the game, he contributed every bit of what he could do for the team. He was one of those players who kept test cricket as the highest priority in the generation of T20's. 7 and a half years ago, India was in a similar kind of shock, when MS Dhoni suddenly announced his retirement from test cricket amidst the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2014. He passed the baton of tests to the best batsman in the world, Virat Kohli. Earlier, Virat had captained India in the shorter format in triangular series in 2013, but critics were not sure about his approach in tests. Earlier in the same series when he got the opportunity to lead in the first test due to injured MSD, he led the team in Adelaide Oval from the front. Scoring 115 and 141 in his first test, he became the first Indian captain and second overall captain to score twin hundreds on his captaincy debut. He also recorded the highest runs by any captain on his captaincy debut match. Eventually, chasing 358, India fell short of 48 runs. But when asked if he regretted going for a draw instead, Virat proudly replied by saying, "not at all. No matter what situation we are in, we'll always go for a win . Looking for a draw will never be in my mind ". After MSD announced his retirement, Virat became the permanent captain of the Indian Test team in the same series. And proving his critics wrong, he yet again led the team from the front scoring 147 runs. He became the only player in history to score three consecutive hundreds in the first three innings as a captain in tests. Although India lost the series, Virat scored 692 runs in 4 tests, which is the highest by any Indian in any series played in Australia. He yet again tried to win the last test match. The draw was never an option for him. He played to win. Such was the attitude of the fierce youngster. It was the same attitude that helped India win a lot of matches in the years to come under his leadership. The quality of cricket India played under him was wonderful. Out of the 69 matches played by Virat in tests, 40 matches came in a winning cause. Having a win percentage of over 58% in tests is difficult, but not if you are Virat Kohli. Also, his average of 54.80 as a captain is the second-best average for the matches he played as skipper and is the best for any player who has captained for a minimum of 50 tests. He was a warrior who loved to lead from the front. Even in the series in which India lost, Virat did fight as a warrior. An instance of this was seen in the on2018 India tour of England. Virat overcame his struggles of the 2014 England tour and registered his first test century in England in this series. In the 2018 series, he amassed 593 runs from 5 tests. The English media houses praises Virat and hailed him as one of the greatest of the game. Under his fierce leadership, India won their first-ever Border Gavaskar series on Australian soil in 2018. With it, India became the first Asian team to beat Australia in Australia in a Test series. Virat's India repeated the heroics in the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar series. He led the Indian team in the final of the first-ever World Test Championship. Furthermore, in July 2021, they won the series in England. The Lord's victory came which came for India after 7 years, came under Virat's leadership. His instructions of cheering loud enough for the sound to reverberate in the Lord's dressing room, for Bumrah and Shami filled the Indian team with confidence so high, that they eventually won the test match. His success can be noted, that the team ranked number 7 in tests when he took over as captain, ended up being the number 1 team in tests for a longer period. He raised the bar of the Indian team so high, that his team losing against the Protea team in South Africa is termed as an upset, despite being an overseas tour. He made the team that hardly won in overseas conditions, to one of the finest teams in the world, whose loss overseas was termed as an upset. That's his biggest success. This is exactly why his decision to leave the captaincy was a shock. He could've easily led the Men in Blue for a longer period in red-ball cricket. The primary reason is the unnecessary hype by Indian media about his performance and the 71st century. Definitely, in the past 2 years, Virat has not played according to the standards he has set, but he is still the highest run-getter for India in these years. The unnecessary hype, pressure and the unspoken conflict and politics just resulted in the ambassador of test cricket quitting his captaincy. He is one of the finest and most aggressive captains of all time. His aggression was often criticized by many but was also lauded by many, who believed in this guy as the ambassador of test cricket in the generation of limited over games. Australian and English cricketers have praised his approach for the longest format of the game. Even in the last series, opposition captain Dean Elgar spoke highly about Virat stating that his name is enough, and he is a dynamic person who brings energy to test cricket. His sudden resignation has shocked everyone to the core. For the past 7 years, the synonym of captain for Indians was Virat. And now, seeing him as no more being a captain in any format will deeply hurt Indian fans. No one knows how India will proceed ahead in Tests with Rohit as the new captain. One can be hopeful. With Virat no more as a captain, one would hope to see them living up to the standards he has set as a batsman. After all, he is the best batsman of this generation. Even if he is no more the captain, whenever one will speak about the most successful captains of test cricket history, Virat's name will be on the top, and that will remain with him forever. - Indian dominance in U-19s- An Article By Ashwin Jangam
Under 19 is a great stage for the upcoming stars of the game. And fortunately for India, the dominance of Men in Blue juniors has been great in U-19 events. In the first week of 2022, the U-19 India team lifted the Asia Cup for eight-time. They did it by comfortably beating Sri Lanka by 9 wickets in a rain-affected match. Since the start of the Asia Cup for the juniors, India has managed to win 7 titles individually, 1 title was shared between India and Pakistan, and Afghanistan emerged victorious in lifting one title. The junior Men in Blue lifting the title was a great sign, considering the U-19 world cup. And they proved it by winning the first match of the World Cup yesterday against the Proteas. Batting first, the team led by Yash Dhull was reduced to a low score, but the captain led from the front and played a beautiful knock of 82 from 100 balls. He was well assisted by Shaik Rasheed and Kaushal Tambe . With 233 to defend, Vicky Ostwal and Raj Angad Bawa did the trick for Men In Blue with the former getting a five-for and later scalping 4 wickets. India would hope that the juniors carry on the same winning run in the tournament ahead. Speaking of the performance in previous U-19 world cups, India has had an upper hand in various departments. Men in Blue have emerged victorious most of the time in the world cup, winning it on 4 occasions in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018. Furthermore, they have the record of the longest winning streak of 11 matches, which happened collectively combining the 2018 and 2020 world cup. They also have the highest winning rate in U-19 world cups with a win percentage of over 76 per cent. Speaking of individual records by Indian junior players, there are many. The highest run-getter in a single world cup is Shikhar Dhawan , with 505 runs in the 2004 world cup. Most men of the tournament awards have been awarded to Indians, with Yuvraj Singh , Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara , Shubham Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal winning it in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2018 and 2020 respectively. Statistics have been in India's favour. In addition to this, the U-19 world cup squad members have significantly contributed to the senior Men in the Blue team later on. The world cup winning captains Mohammad Kaif , Virat Kohli, Unmukt Chand and Prithvi Shaw were looked up as future stars and barring Unmukt, the rest three have proved their worth in the team, with Virat and Prithvi still active in the circuit. Apart from captains, there have been great names who have contributed greatly to Indian cricket. The likes of Yuvraj Singh , Gautam Gambhir , Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and many others have been an integral part of the team which brings smiles to the faces of billions. The likes of Shubham Gill, Ravi Bishnoi, Yashasvi Jaiswal, etc are looked up to as the future stars of India. All these have been a part of the junior team first. The experience of playing in the U-19 team immensely benefits the younger talents to groom themselves and hone their skills. Likewise, the current team led by Yash Dhull would be giving new stars to the Indian team for the future. The likes of Harnoor Singh, Vicky Otswal ,Rajvardhan Hangargekar and others would be an integral part of senior team in the years to come. At this moment, they are raring to go and make an impression in the world cup. And having won the first match, they have made a good first impression. The coach of the team and former India cricketer Hrishikesh Kanitkar is extremely confident about the young boys and says that the title win in the Asia Cup and a victory to start the World Cup campaign has boosted their morale greatly. One can hope for the best to happen, and as Indian, we will pray that these future stars come back from Guyana with the 5th world cup title. - Definition of elegance - Smriti Mandhana, An Article By Ashwin Jangam
This article is about the first Indian female cricketer to score a century in both ODIs and Tests in Australia who already claimed e Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Award for the best female cricketer of the year Yes, We are talking about Smriti Shriniwas Mandhana, the batswoman who had the good fortune of being gifted a practice bat by batting legend Rahul Dravid, which was turned into to record a double ton in one day cricket Authored By:- Ashwin Jangam ( Cricket Analyst, Host and Entertainer) Instagram ID: https://www.instagram.com/cricket_creativity/ If someone asks me the definition of elegance, I'll show them cover drives coming off Smriti's bat. If a book on the perfect drives on offside and straight lofted shots has to be made, it would have all its chapters on Smriti. Smriti Mandhana , the name is known to every person on this planet who plays or watches cricket. Her eye-pleasing batting has always garnered the attention of the cricketing world. Subsequently, the fans and admirers of her batting are not just the viewers, but also the legends of the game who have made the game popular. Smriti is one of the best left-handers in the history of the game across genders. But surprisingly, she lifted the first bat within her hand as a right-handed batsman. It was after seeing her left-handed brother, she started batting as a left-hander. Little did her brother know, a batting style influenced by him to his beloved sister would bring joy to a billion people. Hailing from Madhavnagar , Sangli in Maharashtra, the batter started her professional cricket coaching there itself. Her talent was visible at a very young age when she was selected for Maharashtra U-15 at the age of 9, and U-19 at the age of 11. She made her debut for the Women in Blue in April 2013. But it was in October 2013 when her popularity rose after she became the first Indian woman to score a double hundred in an ODI in domestic Cricket. Since then, the run machine is on a roll creating new records every time she steps on the field. The chase master loves chasing both- the target and new records. She has a record of scoring more than 50 runs in 11 consecutive matches where our team was chasing. On the 12th occasion too, she broke the streak just by 1 run while getting out on 49. The only Indian centurion in ODI and Test on Australian soil also has the highest individual score by any batter of any team against the Kangaroos in Australia. Her immense contribution to ODI's and T20's is known by everyone. And even though she has played few test matches, her rock-solid batting was the reason India could Excel in those test matches. Courtesy : ESPN CRIC INFO While men cricketers from abroad come to India to play the IPL, the immensely talented Smriti has played in various leagues across the globe, and her magnificent performance in all these leagues have left the world in awe of her batting. She also led Trailblazers to victory in the Women's T20 Challenge. A sensational cricketer, a magician with the bat, a true leader and a symbol of women empowerment, Smriti continues to inspire women in every possible way. A career of 8 years for her playing for India has had so much to offer from her, one can only imagine what and how much more she can offer in the decade more she will be playing for the Women in Blue. Her scintillating batting has attracted viewers to watch women's cricket in huge numbers. And in the near future, when women cricket will have full glory days with exponentially increased viewership, Smriti and her batting would be one of the primary reasons to reach this destination.
- And "The search" of series win continues- An Article by Ashwin Jangam
The Indian team lost the series in South Africa yet again. Men in Blue have never won a Test series in South Africa. This was probably the best chance for them to win the series and create history. The Protea team was comparatively less experienced, and with India going with a full-strength squad, everyone expected India to win the series. Breaching the Protea fortress at Centurion, India started well. Top-order contributed significantly, bowlers did a fabulous job. Looked like the expected thing will turn into a reality. In addition to this, the sudden retirement of the most experienced Quinton De Cock from the Protea team added to the Men in Blue's chances of winning. But the Protea team came back stronger than ever and won both the remaining games, sealing the series. When no one expected them to win a match, they won the freedom series. So what exactly went wrong for Men in Blue ?? The answer is simple. The only thing which was different for both sides was their middle order. The difference in the way Protea batters played and Indian batters played was visible to everyone. The inexperienced Protea middle order played sensibly in the second and third test match, something which the experienced Indian order couldn't capitalise. The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been an integral part of the squad for a long time and were selected ahead of youngsters only based on their experience. But they proved the decision of selectors wrong. Indeed their contribution in 2 nd test match was vital, but barring that one, they couldn't be of any great help for Men in Blue. With Pujara out of form in the first match, he managed to get in good touch in the last two matches. But Rahane is throwing wickets after getting started, a recurring story since the past year. Furthermore, the top order hasn't contributed much either. Barring the first match, the top order has failed to deliver. All in all, everyone has failed to deliver what they were expected to. Barring the hundred by Rahul, 79 by Virat and century by Pant, none of the innings was worth praise. The result of which was a low score to defend the bowlers. No matter how good the bowling lineup you have, if you cannot have a good total, the lineup will be under pressure. In addition to this, the bowlers are asked to bowl for the 4th innings on the 3rd day itself, which is why they couldn't harness the pitch which could favour them on the 5th day. Our bowlers have breathed fire, but our batters have failed brutally. India has managed to overcome their biggest concern of pace bowling, but their strength batting has lacked the potential. Once a team known for batting is not able to post good scores of above 300 regularly. The real reason for India's failure is our batting. On the contrary, the Protea batters have batted their heart out. They adapted to the conditions well. The first match was a lesson to them, and the mistakes they did in the first match were not repeated by them again. With Elgar leading from the front in 2nd test, they lead to a convincing victory. Also, with a strong top order and middle order, they outplayed the world-class Indian bowler. It's not like the bowlers didn't target good length, but the Protea batters had answers to bowlers fire with caution. The inexperienced, yet determined Protea batting line-up has impressed many. Keegan Peterson is one of the many names that have grabbed attention. The highest run-getter in the series is a treat to watch. His class was visible on the first ball of the series he played against Bumrah in the first match when he defended the ball beautifully with elbow up. He was beautifully capitalising the slightest of room on the up on the offside. He needs to improve his technique for the fuller length, but looking at the moment, he looks good. Also, Marco Jenson and Lungi Ngidi have played well in the series. For South Africa, it is a complete team effort. The likes of Rabada, Jenson and Ngidi have done their job with the ball perfectly, and Elgar, Temba Bavuma, Van der Russen and Peterson have done adapted quickly, recovering from their mistakes to take their side to a victory. This young Protea side had the home advantage, but have made a statement to not take them lightly. And with the likes of Peterson and Jansen, the future of South Africa in tests look good. Apart from both the team's performance, the DRS played a vital role. The lbw of Elgar off Ashwin declined by the Ball tracker was a shock to everyone including the umpire Erasmus. The frustration of Indian players was visible and understandable, but there has to be a limit to showing the emotion. Just like the Aussies always crossing the line, Virat and his men did it this time. There is no doubt that technology needs to be better, yet the behaviour of players needs to be checked by the boards regularly. To conclude, the series victory was a well-deserving one for the Proteas. They played their heart out, improved from the previous game, adapted well, did not make repeated mistakes, and eventually, they emerged victoriously. On the other side, you have to feel for the Indian bowlers. But speaking of the batters, they need to learn the way Proteas did, and up their game. It was not a series to remember for Indians, and they would like to forget it and move on. But, will the quality India has, they will rise, rise in tests in the next tour, and in the ODI's against Proteas where they will try to avenge the test series defeat. - Did you know? Rahul Dravid also played for Scotland.
Rahul Dravid is not just a name, it's an emotion for Indian cricket fans. He is the technically most sound batter to have ever played for India. While some players gain respect by wearing Blue Jersey, Rahul Dravid increased the respect for Blue Jersey by wearing it. It's an undeniable fact that he is one of the greatest servants of Indian cricket. But what if I tell you, the Wall of Indian cricket also played for Scotland? Would you believe it ?? It's true. Mr . Dependable of the Indian team wore another Blue Jersey for 3 months in 2003, and that jersey was Scottish National team jersey. His short stint with the Scottish team yielded them greatly, and Scotland always thanked the elegant batter for his services. So how did it all happen? Well, there is an interesting story to this. Post India's success in the 2003 World cup, Indian team seniors had been given a good amount of break. During this break, the Chief Executive of Scottish Cricket Union, Gwynne Jones approached the then coach of the Indian team John Wright. He requested Wright to send an Indian superstar of the game to come to help the Scottish Team raise their standard of the game. Initially, he was keen on having Sachin Tendulkar, but John Wright said the best man to do it was none other than Rahul Dravid. Always keen to accept challenges, Dravid accepted this one immediately. Newlywed Dravid, along with his wife Vijeta travelled to Scotland. The NRIs in Scotland were so desperate to have the Wall of Indian cricket help the Scottish team, that they raised the amount of 45000 pounds to pay to the superstar by arranging parties and events in their area. And he didn't disappoint them. He played a total of 12 games for Scotland Saltirez, where 11 games were against county teams, and 1 tour game was against Pakistan. While playing a dozen of games for them, Dravid amassed 600 runs overall, with an average of 66.66. He scored 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries. Although his team could only win 1 match out of the 12, he turned out to be the highest run-getter in the tournament. But his impact on the Scottish team was more than just the runs he scores. While batting in the nets, he always put a radio set on his helmet and gave minute details about his batting and his shot selection. This helped all the other players tremendously improve their game. The then coach of Scotland, Tony Judd mentioned Dravid's impact as "priceless", as his insights helped groom the Scottish youngsters. Interestingly the current captain of the Scottish team, Kyle Coetzer was also a part of the squad for which Dravid played. During a press conference in the T20 world cup 2021, he recalled Dravid's appearance for Scotland. Coetzer mentioned that it was great learning for all of us young guys. He also mentioned one of the incidents where he and Dravid were involved in a run-out, where Dravid went on to score a century later in that match. In a nutshell, Dravid accomplished the challenge elegantly, just like he always did for Men in Blue. His inclusion lifted the standard of Scottish batting. And his efforts were always applauded by the Scottish team and fans. In 2007 when Dravid was the captain of India for one odd game to be played in Scotland, he received a standing ovation and thunderous applause from the entire crowd. In this way, the Mr, Dependable of Indian cricket played for Scotland and also helped them greatly. There are several instances of this great man helping others selflessly, but this is the one which is one of those which stands out amongst all the others. Dravid is truly a gentleman, a man of ethics and an inspiration for many. One does not know what happens to Men in Blue in future, but whenever will speak about Indian cricket, as well as Scottish cricket, this legend's name will always be written in golden words. - Shrikant Kunden opens up about the dark side of a startup ecosystem
Shrikant Kunden, a Pune based entrepreneur developed a novel, innovative, patent-filed technology on digital addressing, “Digital Location System (DLS)”. After DLS winning 4th Prize in a national level competition organised by the Government of India & CII in 2012, Indian Angel Network (IAN), the largest angel funding house, on the pretext of being interested in investing in it, asked Kunden to submit a complete detailed techno-commercial proposal but didn’t fund it. But, soon Kunden realised that IAN has converted the know-how thus received for its development & benefit in connivance with Zipper Private Limited, in which IAN invested Rs 6 Cr at a much lower valuation. Kunden lodged an FIR on 26th March’2016 against IAN, Zipper & Gagan Agarwal, Incubator Manager, IAN for the offence u/s IPC 420, 406 & 34 for alleged misusing confidential documents, valuable information, trade secrets about DLS and, criminal breach of trust. Since the offence involves software, patent, e-mail & mobile communications, Kunden had requested the Police repeatedly for transferring the case to Cyber Division to investigate and, adding Copy-Right & IT Act related sections that were missing in FIR. Pune police ignored the request & got the investigation done by the criminal division. After 3 years of poor investigation, Police filed an A-Summary report in the Pune Court requesting closure of the said FIR for not being able to find adequate pieces of evidence the against accused. Kunden filed a Protest petition in the court opposing the closure of the FIR. Kunden also filed an additional Private petition, making Aditya Vuchi (Hyd), Padmaja Shailen Ruparel (Delhi), Dr Saurabh Srivastav (Delhi), Sanjay Bharatkumar Mehta (Mumbai) party in the said offence, also alleging that Pune Police is hand-in-gloves with the accused in the entire investigation and, appealing the court to investigate the crime under judicial monitoring by issuing process, u/s 420, 406, 417, 120(B) of IPC and section 120 read with 124 of the Patents Act, 1970 and section 72 read with section 85 of the Information Technology Act 2000 (Amendment Act) 2008. In December’2021, the honourable court not only rejected “A-Summary” expressing complete dissatisfaction over the investigation report but, also took cognisance of serious observations about the overall investigation done on FIR & allegations levelled against Police in the Private petition and ordered Police to conduct independent fact-finding inquiry u/s 202 of CRPC, before court issuing process. “With the court's intervention in the matter now I hope police will do proper investigation and give me due to justice,” says Kunden. Consequent to the complaint registered, Zippr had filed pre-grant opposition in 2015-16 against Kunden’s patent application, in anticipation of serious implications of patent infringement suit in future once the patent gets granted. “The conduct of Mumbai Patent Office during the hearing process was biased and full of exceptions much like Pune Police investigation. During the examination, we have had 18 hours of record long hearing on our matter with the patent examiner & had submitted 331 pages of document quashing every objection. Yet, Patent Office in its order document mentions only the objections raised by Zippr & leaves the section on the clarification given completely blank. As in, I did not give any say or given any submissions against objections. Thus the patent refused. We then filed an appeal against this erroneous order and the matter is in Mumbai High Court.” says Kunden. In 2017, Zippr then filed a case against me in Hyderabad alleged that Kunden threatened the company for using the disputed technology for making business. Zippr presented the court caution letter sent by Kunden to the company as a threatening letter and sought an injunction. According to Patent Act 1970, the patent applicant gets like-privileges from the date of application. And the applicant has a legitimate right to send in a caution letter to the infringer, making him aware of the legalities of it. Interestingly at the last moment, our lawyer turned hostile and did not file written submission as prescribed, on the due date. Finally, the court passed a temporary injunction, restraining Kunden from threatening Zippr for using the technology for business. The order also states that the injunction is subject to the result of the Patent Application and the findings of the said order are not binding on the police investigating agents. We then filed an appeal against this Injunction Order in Hyderabad High Court” says Kunden. In 2018, Vuchi then filed a fake FIR in Hyderabad alleging that Kunden had made threatening calls from 2 Pune based landline phones and, also sent 2 goons to Hyderabad who beat & threaten Vuchi and, demanded Rs 5 Cr settle the ongoing cases. “Vuchi filed the above fake FIR to pressurise me to withdraw FIR against him in Pune. Hyderabad Police were not investigating the matter and keeping the FIR pending. As anticipated, the police one day advised me to withdraw FIR against Vuchi against which he offered to withdraw this case. I refused. We somehow collected the call details registry (CDR) reports of those 2 landline phones. The report reveals that there were no calls made onto Vuchi’s mobile from these landline phones ever. We submitted documentary evidence to the Hyderabad Police, Commissioner and filed a Quash Petition in March’2019 in Honourable Hyderabad High Court to close the fake FIR and take strict actions against Vuchi, fake witnesses & Hyderabad Police for this conspiracy & harassment.” says Kunden. We all appreciate the vision of honourable PM Shri Narendra Modi about “Start-up India” & “Innovate India”. Undoubtedly, these initiatives will help in generating huge employment opportunities & fostering the economic growth of the country. Believing in his vision, the start-up fever is catching up very fast in our country. Today more than 55,000 Startups are registered in India. And, more and more talented graduates are stepping into the entrepreneurship journey. Today, our Start-up ecosystem is the third-largest in the world after China and the US. The investor community is undoubtedly one of the major backbones for the growth of the start-ups as they are the ones who bet sizeable money on their ideas. Investors always show interest in start-ups that have business models focused on innovation. And for any such innovation, secrecy & protection are the major factors. All start-ups look for investors, at some stage, but mostly at an early stage which is catered by High Net worth Individuals (HNIs) or a group of HNIs, called “Angel investors”. Government bodies organise several exhibitions, seminars, forums, competitions to promote start-up and innovation across the country. All investors participate in such programs without fail as they get free, un-controlled access to un-limited brilliant ideas, talent & proposals. Since it is a government forum, start-ups tend to believe that they are in safe hands and start disclosing everything. But, the big question is; are all investors angels? It just reminds the quote “Even the devil was once an angel”. The above experience is very damaging to the spirit of Start-Up and innovation. If they are not taken care of at their respective level, the entire ecosystem will fall. It will be a big setback to our honourable PM’s Start-Up vision, will set a wrong image in the global community and will ruin the career of thousands of budding entrepreneurs & inventors. This article was published with reference to a press release from the management of IZON Technologies Private Limited . - Rahul Dravid: The Wall that made India a fortress
If the self-centred world is full of self-obsessed celebrities, there are still a few selfless people. These people make the world better. One such gentleman lived his entire life to remain the epitome of selflessness throughout his entire life, living up to the game's name as gentleman's game. The man is not an ordinary person. The technically most sound batsman to ever played for Men in Blue, the Man who performed every task the team required, the Man who played most balls in test cricket history and also spent most minutes on the crease spent by any cricketer, and the Wall who made India stronger than before is none other than the current head coach of the Indian team, Rahul Dravid. The Wall of Indian cricket, as he is referred to, came as a replacement of someone, and became an irreplaceable part of the team. One of the greatest batsmen to have ever played the game, Dravid ruled the game like a boss. He set a benchmark for every player who plays red-ball cricket. Scaling new heights, he left a legacy in Indian cricket. He conquered the cricketing world with his bat and conquered the hearts of fans with his humility and selflessness. A huge servant of Indian cricket, he continues to serve Men in Blue in a different role. Born in a Marathi family, Dravid started playing professional cricket at the age of 12. In 1991, he played his first Ranji game for Karnataka. He didn't get to play a full season that year but made his presence felt. Post that, every season he played turned out to be fruitful for him. In 1994 and 1995, he was knocking on the doors of the Indian team through his performances in first-class cricket. His debut for Men in Blue happened right in the first match after the 1996 world cup. His ODI debut was not worth remembering, but his test debut was a sight that Indians loved. He came in at a crucial time and scored made a huge partnership with another debutant Sourav Ganguly. Little did they know that time that both the test debutants would leave a great legacy in a matter of a decade. With Dravid scoring 95 runs, and Ganguly scoring 137 runs, India reached a decent total. Both of them showed the world the potential they had. Dravid missed out on a well deserved century just by 5 runs but made it to the Lord's honour board in 2011 by scoring a century. Also, his honesty was appreciated, when he didn't even wait for the umpire's decision when he nicked the ball on 95 runs on his debut. Since then, Dravid has been an integral part of the test team. He has been a part of many amazing test matches, but the one which stands out tall amongst all is the Eden Gardens Test in 2001 against Australia. In reply to Australia's 445, India was bundled out of 171 in the first innings. Australia enforced a follow-on on India, intending to win this match comfortably. But very very special players VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid had different plans. Batting for almost 130 overs together, they tore apart the Australian bowling lineup consisting of McGrath, Gillespie, Kasprowicz and Warne and went on to post a mammoth score of 657 runs. Aussies had no answer to these two where Laxman scored 281 and Dravid scored 180. Eventually, the pumped-up Indians won the test match bundling Australia for 212 in 68.3 overs while they were chasing a target of 384 runs. This was the only third instance with any team that had won a test match after follow-on had been enforced upon them. Also, India became the first team except England to achieve this feat, but both the times they won it with a margin of fewer than 20 runs, while India won it with 171 runs. In this win, both, Laxman and Dravid had a lion's share. This test marked the beginning of the new chapter in India. The fighting spirit of Dravid and Laxman was praised by everyone including the Aussie media. Dravid, the rock-solid pillar of the test team went on to win many more accolades in Test cricket for the country. With his indinavir highest being 270, the right-hander amassed a mammoth 13288 runs in test cricket reaching the three-figure mark 36 times. Mr Dependable for Men in Blue faced a whopping 31258 balls in his Test career, which is the most by any player in the history of the game. Also, he spent 44152 minutes on the crease batting in test cricket, a world record almost impossible to break. He did this by playing fewer matches than a few other players. He also has a record of never being out on a golden duck in the 286 innings he played in tests. Also, Dravid has the record for most catches by any non-wicket-keeper in tests with a tally of 210 catches. In ODI's, he initially struggled to be a part of playing eleven, but after 1998, he became a fixed member of the ODI side. His contribution in the 1999 and 2003 world cup was pivotal in Team India's journey. Those who think his strike rate was not up to the mark should remember that Dravid has scored the second-fastest fifty by an Indian batter, which came off just 22 balls against New Zealand in 2003. He worked hard to improve his strike rate, and he developed a habit of accelerating the innings, without playing areal shots. In this way, he scored 10889 runs in his ODI career. He is one of the only seven players to have scored 10000 runs in both ODI's and Tests. While playing ODI's he made some great records. He is the only batter to be involved in 300+ run partnerships in ODI's more than once. He did it with Sourav Ganguly , scoring a partnership of 318 runs in the 1999 cup. This was the first 300+ run stand by any team in ODI's. Post that, in 2000, he was involved in another such partnership, where along with Sachin Tendulkar made a partnership of 331 runs, a record which remained intact for the next 15 years. He played only one T20 match at the international level in 2012 against England. The match was also his last international fixture. In a match, the best Test player of India scored 31 runs off 18 balls, and he hit three consecutive huge sixes off Samit Patel, leaving everyone in admiration. He did play T20 s in the Indian Premier League, where he was always good with the bat and as a leader. After retiring from all forms of cricket in 2013, he took some time from the game for his family, and then returned to the game, with a different role as the coach. After successfully mentoring Rajasthan royals in 2014, and the Indian team in 2015, he was appointed as the coach of the U-19 Indian side. Under his guidance, U-19 consistently performed exceptionally well for 4 years and won a world cup in 2018. In 2019, he was appointed as the head of NCA (National Cricket Academy), where he overlooked all the activities in the academy. He groomed many players like Rishabh Pant, Shubhman Gill, Prithvi Shaw, Washington Sundar, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, who helped India breach fortress Gabba, and are now looked up to as the upcoming stars of Men in Blue. In 2021, Dravid was appointed as the head coach of Men in Blue, news which brought joy to billions of fans. He currently serves as the coach of the Indian team. With a calm head over their shoulders, Dravid is extremely composed. However, there is a witty side to his personality too. In one instance, when he was batting in Australia, he scored the first run after 40 balls. The Aussie crowd in an attempt to tease Dravid started clapping, and he too responded by raising a bat towards them. That was probably the only time a batter raised a bat his bat after scoring 1 run. The Wall, as he is termed by the fans across the globe, was always a boon for India, and a nightmare for the opposition. In one match, he came as an opener for India in tests and remained not out till the end, when the other 10 batsmen fell. Referring to this incident, the fastest bowler Shoaib Akhtar famously said " If you don't dismiss Rahul Dravid in the first 15 minutes, you have to dismiss the other 10 batters". This shows what Dravid meant to India. Also, this goes on to show the respect players from other countries had for Dravid. Speaking about Dravid, once the senior cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle said," If you ask him to walk on water, he'll ask how many kilometres ?". This sentence perfectly sums up the contribution of Rahul Dravid to Indian cricket. He performed every single role selflessly for the team, be it playing for different positions, or being a wicketkeeper, or being a captain. The technically most sound batsman in the world, Dravid gave everything to Indian cricket. While playing he ensured his performances make India emerge victoriously, and while coaching he ensures his guidance helps the current players emulate what he did. Today India is seen as one of the finest cricketing nations, but the results are an aftermath of the efforts taken by legends like Rahul Dravid. Whenever someone will write a book in Indian cricket team history, Rahul Dravid's name will be mentioned in golden letters. This golden man, the man with no haters, turns 49 today. We wish him a very happy birthday and pray to God that this legend lives forever.
