Veteran Cinematographer and Director Shaji Karun underlined the importance of understanding space while making Cinema as time can travel back and forth in the medium. 71-year-old Karun was speaking at the Master Class "Thinking Images" during the 21st Pune International Film Festival, organised by the Pune Film Foundation and the Government of Maharashtra. Samar Nakhate, Chairman, of the selection committee, PIFF interacted with Karun, whose film was the last Indian film which won accolades at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, at the PVR Icon, Pavillion on the Senapati Bapat Road. Pune Film Foundation Chairman and PIFF Director Dr Jabbar Patel were also present on occasion. "Cinema is moving and there are no still images. Understanding space is important while making Cinema. Space can be used in different ways like colour, and music," Kollam-born Karun said stressing the importance of images in Cinema. He also said that Cinema was not still it is moving and is a medium where time can travel backwards and even move forward. "Image is an answer for motion. The focus should always be given while creating images as they have value. Once an image is created for cinema, it becomes history and you cannot remove it," Karun said. "Observation is important, observe the life of people around you. Imagination is important to survive in the industry," he said as he advised young directors. BOX: Well-known Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit along with her husband Dr Shriram Nene visited the 21st Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) on Sunday. In the afternoon, "Panchak", a Marathi film, produced by Madhuri Dixit's RNM Moving Pictures, was shown. The picture has been shortlisted in the Marathi Film competition category. Madhuri Dixit and her husband Dr Shriram Nene, who is the co-producer, were present for the film's screening.

“Considering that many things happen around us in the entire process of filmmaking, effective people management and proper communication play an important role. Along with the actors on the screen, every person behind the screen is important,” asserted the well-known Marathi film director, Chaitanya Tamhane. He was speaking on the topic ‘Lessons I have learnt so far’ while delivering the ‘Vijay Tendulkar Memorial Lecture’ during the 21st Pune International Film Festival organized by the Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government today at PVR Icon in Pavilion Mall on Senapati Bapat Road. Samar Nakhate, Chairman, of the Selection Committee, PIFF interacted with Prasad in presence of Dr Jabbar Patel, Director of PIFF and Dr Mohan Agashe, Trustee, PIFF. “As a director, if I want to capture what I see on camera, I have to make sure that everyone who works with me understands what I have in mind. It's important to have everyone involved in the film process on the same 'page'. The crew of the film is as responsible because the vibes, energy and dynamics of the crew will affect the actors. The casting of the crew is responsible for giving creative space during filmmaking. It’s basically teamwork and if it does not happen with the way of working of the crew then it will be problematic.” Speaking on the points one needs to learn during filmmaking, Chaitanya said it’s important to ‘Know Oneself’. “You have to understand yourself and your way of working. You have to know your temperament, ways to deal with pressures, interferences and feedback to be at the optimum level. I follow a Mantra that is ‘I don’t know the answer and I am going to find it through a process, which will give me my space. We have to do it ourselves because there is no other way,” he said. Saying that he does lots of preparation before everything, Tamhane said, “Always remember two things: test test test...prep prep prep. This will give you the satisfaction to make things right. Conceptualization, scripting and production process of the film should be done properly along with rigorous preparation beforehand.” Tamhane also advised the audience to believe in themselves. “Many people will come in your way and tell you that you are wrong and there will be many difficulties but it is important to believe in oneself and keep expanding one’s knowledge base as a filmmaker,” he said.

“Usually, the director of a film leaves his mark through the entire film, while the actors get credit for their actions along with the cameraman who gets to tell a story through visuals. But the work of the film editor, which is an invisible art, never gets recognition. The editing work is creativity, which is one of the important factors of the film,” said nine-time National Award-winning film editor, A Sreekar Prasad. He was speaking on the topic 'The Invisible Art of Film Editing' during the 21st Pune International Film Festival organized by the Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government today at PVR Icon in Pavilion Mall on Senapati Bapat Road. Samar Nakhate, Chairman, of the Selection Committee, PIFF interacted with Prasad in presence of Dr Jabbar Patel, Director of PIFF. “An editor's role is also more important than just being associated with the length of the film, who actually provides the director with an objective insight. Editing is all about having the right cut, at the right time to make the film more interesting. The editing work should be integrated with the story to help the director convey the intended meaning to the audience. Indian cinema is a rich amalgamation of language, emotion, dialogue and visuals, and the editor plays the major role of tying all these into a single thread. The director's vision is what the editor brings to completion and hence the synergy between the editor and the director is a game changer in the entire film process,” said Prasad, who was the head of the editing department for the Indian blockbuster movie ‘RRR’. “Being open to technology to make our work better is a part of evolution. The editor also has to remain open to change and adapt to different types of genres and stories. Creativity should take precedence over a technicality, but that doesn't mean one should be blind to the growth of technology. It is very important to know your target audience. Some people may have good ideas but less targeted audiences, which may not make the film work. You have to be clear about who sees your story,” Prasad added. When asked about the song ‘Natu Natu’, from the movie RRR, which has won plaudits the world over, Prasad said that the work was done with immense passion. “The credit goes to the director, S. S. Rajamouli who pushed it to a bigger level. What connected beside the songs and dance was the camaraderie between the two actors, which accordingly got all the attention. The story also appealed to the audience,” he said

Leaving all the busy schedules and worries behind, the female practitioners came together with a new version, a new start, a Nayee Shuruwat. The ladies wing of the Pune Peth Doctors Association was inaugurated on this day. All of them came together with the colourful concept of Haldikumkum. The event was inaugurated by Dr Anand Bagul Sir, Universal Hospital, Pune followed by his motivating speech. Dr Kaveri Bhosale had taken the initiative to bind all the doctors together and hosted the event. Dr Renuka Shinde, Dr Sumedha Mahale, Dr Kavita Patil and Dr Prajapat Gaikwad strived to make the event a grand success.
