  • Why" Song"? - An Interesting Article by Mike Turner

As a songwriter, I’m frequently asked, “Why do you write songs?” I hear this question in two forms: “Why song, as opposed to some other medium?” And, “What are you trying to accomplish with your songs?” On the first question, “Why song?”, in a way it’s because I had no other choice. In my professional career (27 years as a law enforcement officer), I did a lot of technical writing - investigative reports, training manuals, regulations, legislation – but it was fact-based, nothing terribly “creative.” Only after I’d retired, and on a lark took up the ukulele, did I start writing; and the song seemed to be the medium the muse selected for me. I came from a very musical family, mostly in the old-time mountain- and gospel music traditions (my parents were originally from Appalachia in the US, and although they had moved away from that region before I was born, we spent holidays with family there). I grew up hearing that music. And in the ‘60s we lived outside of Detroit, so heard a LOT of Motown, soul and blues music. So even though I hadn’t played music myself, it was a major part of my life, and I absorbed musical conventions and “vibe” in listening to it. Song seemed a natural way of expressing myself once I came to writing. It’s not as though I could have just taken up some other medium. In high school, I was fairly competent in drafting classes, but I didn’t have the artistic abilities or interests to take me into mediums like illustration, or cartooning, or painting. Sculpting? Metalwork? Nope, no mechanical aptitude. As to other forms of writing, I tried a little short-story writing, but had no particular flair for description or dialogue; and I didn’t have the attention span needed to even think about tackling a longer form. But songwriting seemed to come somewhat naturally, in terms of knowing some of the forms and conventions. I was also attracted by the aural aspect – recognizing that I tend to “tell” more than “show” in my writing, and yet wanting to evoke emotion, I found that the musical aspects of the frequent song gave me an added dimension in which to add feeling to words. I gravitated to the forms, vocal inflexions and phrasing of the blues, particularly in minor keys to express some of the sense of longing and loss I wanted to comment upon. No other art form seemed to me to combine both intellect (words) and emotion (sounds) in a way that I was capable of capturing. And so “song” it was. That said, after a period of time I found “song” to be somewhat limiting. I particularly found the repetition of chorus and the rhyming conventions of song, didn’t lend themselves to some of the things I wanted to say. Free-form poetry offered some opportunities for such expression; and much as I’ve had some success in writing and recording songs, I found some success in the publishing of some of my poetic works as well. Even in poetry, however, I find myself drawn to aural aspects – most of my poems are meant to be read aloud, and I draw inspiration from U.S. Southern gospel preachers in the cadences and phrasing of how I structure much of my poetry. So, to sum up, the answer to the first question, “Why song,” I’d say that it’s because it’s the form that most naturally suggested itself to me based on what I had internalized of music over the course of my life. Song has been the prism through which I viewed life, so it only made sense for it to be the mirror that I held up to offer observations of what I felt life is about. As to the second question, “What are you trying to accomplish with your songs?”, I’m reminded of a quote attributed to F. Scott Fitzgerald, “You don’t write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say.” I learned early on that I wanted my writing to say something, to carry meaning: to comment on life and the world around us, inform and inspire and motivate. My very first song came out of my taking up the ukulele – no one who knew me would ever have thought of me playing the ‘uke. As it happened, it turned out I had some talent with the little instrument, and that struck me as both ironic and amusing. I wanted to capture that and share it and so wrote a little ditty, “Ukulele Playing Blues,” about looking for my muse and finding it in the ukulele. The song was well-received, and as the lyric says, from that point songs, “poured out of me like the flood from a busted dam.” Some of my songs are intended to inform and motivate listeners to work towards a better world, dealing with such social issues as the tragedy of gun violence, poverty, homelessness, racism, world peace. Other songs are a commentary on historical events, particularly in my area of the world, which is rich in cultural diversity and heritage. Still, other songs deal with some of the common experiences – love, longing, loss, hope, faith – that united us as human beings. In all of my songs, I’m expressing my observations, emotions, fears, hopes and optimism that, together, we can do and be better. I’m hoping that listeners connect with these messages, feel them as well, and are comforted in their troubles, empathetic towards the troubles of others, and compassionate in reaching out to add their own observations, emotion and optimism to our collective experience. Why song? Because it’s my way of coping with life; my effort to offer connection, hope and encouragement; my vehicle for inspiring others to reach out and connect as well. I suspect these are much the same motivators by which all artists are driven to express themselves – it just happens that “song” is the medium that, for me, best expresses what I’m endeavouring to convey. • Success Story of 17-year-old Entrepreneur Trisha Reddy : Giving life to pre-loved clothes

When the Coronavirus pandemic resulted in lockdown, quarantine and shutting down of schools, what would a 17-year-old girl have done? Sit back, enjoy the unexpected holidays and chill? But, Trisha Reddy, an 11th grader girl then (currently in 12th grade) studying at Oakridge International School in the city conceptualized and founded 'ThriftChicByTrish’, an online Thrift Store. Three months into it, she shares her success as one of the earliest entrants into the online thrifting business. With the increased conversation about repurposing pre-loved fashion and sustainability, thrift stores are growing in popularity particularly those with an online presence, says Trisha Reddy. Thrifting is an age-old practice in India. In the days of my parents' childhood, unused clothes were always given to the younger siblings in the family. It was a well-accepted practice and nobody minded it. But, somehow the present generation lost the practice. I wanted to revive that age-old practice very unique to our country but add a business element to it. Thus my online thrifting store "ThriftChicByTrish" was conceived on Instagram, she informs. So, she became a CoronaStudentPreneur. Her thrift store started just a few months ago in January, presently has almost 1000 followers. I began with a sum of Rs 35,000/- loaned by my parents. The investment has gone basically into the packaging material for the store, she adds. I have done a business of INR 70,000/-(Seventy Thousand), having sold 75 pieces of garments out of 87 on display. Most of those clothes are mine and a few of the people I know, Trisha adds. Trisha is the proud founder of one of the earliest Thrift Stores in South India, She is a trendsetter and achieved fast success. ThriftChicByTrish, uses Instagram as a platform and offers carefully curated pre-loved, trendy, affordable, pre-owned clothing pieces for sale on a particular day of the week and at a given time that are just a phone click away, and encourages thrifting to become more than just a passing trend, a trend here to stay. The good thing about thrifting is giving life to clothes lying unused in wardrobes. It is an online sale of pre-used items at discounted prices. Thrifting is a new way of selling high-end clothing well below retail prices. When asked about her inspiration for the idea she said “Since I’ve always had a passion to start something of my own in the field of fashion and have already gained an insight into it through blogging, I thought why not combine my love for fashion, contemporary and high street trends and turn it into a business that enables a sustainable life? So, I introduced- “ThriftChicByTrish.” “When I had a little free time last November, on my search I found the 'idea of thrifting', 'thrift shopping', 'thrift stores. 'Thrifting culture' was not very popular in this part of the country. I want to encourage the reuse and repurchase of pre-loved, pre-cared, unused and less used clothes. And, I wanted to give a fresh lease of life to them. I explored, says Trisha, thrift shops which are widely prevalent in the west. They are also better known in Indian cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai. But, the awareness is not much in South India and more so in Telugu states. So I researched sustainable shopping and why it matters and understood the importance of curation. And now a few months down the lane, I have my thrift store with reasonable success. So on this occasion, I wanted to reach out to people through the media to create more awareness for thrifting. The new trend in the fashion industry today is 'Sustainable Fashion". Socially conscious and responsible fashion is more important today than ever before. Eco-friendly fashion, ethical clothing, affordable luxury, clothing rental, buying second-hand clothing are the trends the industry is witnessing, says entrepreneur Trisha. I have curated the collection of clothes I sell, style them for the picture and sport as a model wearing those clothes to showcase them to customers, Trisha explains how a thrift store works. I promote them through my store on Instagram. If there is any defect on the clothes it is mentioned in the description. I have got customers from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai but most of them are from Hyderabad. My sister Anoushka Reddy helps me with the photography aspect and conceptualising the brand name, logo, packaging etc. All my pictures are taken on either an Android Samsung phone or an iPhone-11. Currently, it carries only female clothes. Soon she is planning to add male clothing as well as Indian wear. She doesn't rule out expanding further. Trisha, now 17 years old and studying 12th grade is multifaceted and wears many hats. She is into fitness, fashion, classical dance, entrepreneurship, content creation, and writes a fashion blog titled 'TresChicByTrish". All the clothes are sold at a very affordable cost. They are door delivered through sustainable, germ-free packaging. Towards our services, a small portion of the price is kept as our fee for the same, she informs. We buy pre-used automobiles (cars and bikes), pre-owned houses and much more. So why not buy pre-loved clothes, StudentPreneur Trisha questions? Some people may find it absurd to wear clothes worn by someone else before, says Trisha and adds, even in shops that sell new clothes, you buy clothes that are tried by other people in trial rooms. Through my thrift store, one can find beautiful pre-loved clothes faster and from the comfort of one’s home, she explains When the whole world is sailing through 'touchless', 'contactless' products and environment, didn't she find it challenging to market the pre-used clothes? Being asked this she replies “We dry clean the garments twice, once after I wear and showcase for a photograph and second before delivery. The first few orders I received were from my close friends who wanted to support my endeavour and this boosted my morale. Some well-wishers initially doubted that who would be interested in buying second-hand clothes? But, after I started running the thrift store, they now realise that there is a huge market available to be explored, says Trisha. Trisha is a multi-talented girl. Her fashion blog “TresChicByTrish” has been running for almost 4 years now and she uses it as a platform to write about her love for fashion and voice her opinions on the subject. “Tres and Chi are two french words meaning very stylish or chic. I am in love with the language, so name it accordingly”, says she. She herself designed the logo for the store and the sustainable packaging which is free from plastic. It includes a box, butter paper to wrap the clothes, stickers and a well-designed thank you card. She is also a winner of the 2019 TiE Young Entrepreneurs Summer Business Pitchfest and was the leader of the Hyderabad Student Team Mr Pill Minder. Studies-work life balance is very challenging. But, I can manage well by prioritizing things. My parents had adequately cautioned me about possible risks and failures. I was prepared sufficiently for such outcomes well before I embarked on this entrepreneurial journey, she informs. Trisha's goal is to make online thrifting a culture. The production of new clothing uses a lot of natural resources and produces a lot of waste. Shopping through online thrifting stores is a sustainable way as it doesn't need a resource to produce, as the products already exist. That is why more and more people are giving pre-loved clothing a second chance to live and regard it as a good way of giving back to society, the passionate Trisha says. Naturally, people are more inclined to give their old clothes a second life. Price is now an additional incentive for them to give clothes to thrifting stores says the teenage entrepreneur. No one expects any money for the discarded clothes. But, my venture adds monetization, which is now encouraging more and more people to explore this. Trisha is confident of doing well. She is not in a hurry. She wanted to go slow but leave her mark.

I have been a big foodie since I was a little kid and as I grew older, I started cooking and eventually, it became my passion. During the lockdown, as everyone was getting tired of the boredom, some people were finding their hidden talent, and some were embracing their long-lost dreams. And that’s when I thought, it is the right time to start my journey as a food influencer. Initially, I’d post pictures of my homemade food and soon I was getting more and more followers. Presently, we are a family of 9k plus followers. As I was increasing my family on Instagram, I got to know about the collaborations. At first, I approached a few brands to collaborate with me. Thereafter, as my page grew, the brands started approaching me for their promotions. I did the promotions for different kinds of products like beauty products, food products, healthy products etc. Throughout the months, I have seen development and improvement on my page. My social network has grown internationally and since then, I have also made many friends. Though I wasn’t aware of things like how to put videos on my stories or to make reels as a food influencer. These were the few obstacles I had to face during the initial period of my journey. The fact that I’m married and also pursuing a language, these things never stopped me from becoming a food influencer, as I was also getting strong support from my husband. As atoI would like to share some advice with you all like, once you have created your page, you should post regularly and be consistent with it. Interaction with your followers is also essential, keep them updated on what you have cooked. Last but not the least, patience is the key to success. Don’t panic and keep calm and everything will go on smoothly. Whenever I hang out with my family or friends, the first thing that comes out of my mouth after seeing my food is “wait, wait, wait, Pehle Mujhe pictures to click karne do!” (wait, wait, wait, let me click the pictures first!!) It is all thanks to my followers, who supported me in every phase of this journey of mine. My sisters have also made a huge contribution in keeping my page alive. Lastly, if you want to become an influencer, it doesn’t matter if it is for food, fitness, nutrition etc., everything will work out in the end. You might have to go through some obstacles but again as I said, patience is everything. All you need to do is work hard and the results will be in front of you. Here’s the link to my account.
