I was a judge at a Slam Poetry EveInstagramnt held on 28th August in Pune, in the company of two of the most accomplished and talented poets I know – S M Mehdi Imam and KC Vlaine (@kcvlaine). This event was organized by The Yellow Room (@the_yellow_room_pune), in collaboration with BITS – Pilani, with the top performer getting a chance to perform at BITS – Pilani’sannual Poetry Slam, titled Purple Prose. It was an evening of some outstanding performances. Beautiful venue @thejackfruittree37 and great hosting by Simran Khurana (@metaphors_unfurled) lifted the whole experience to the next level. It was a pleasure to see so many young poets, and some not so young, take the stage to showcase their best work. The event witnessed poetry in different languages, genres and forms and the range of work surpassed expectations. It was heartening to see poetry not just surviving, but also thriving. From around 30 participants, it was challenging for the judges to select the top four performers and the scoring was very close, with extremely narrow winning margins. To ensure fair assessment and ranking, after the first round, a few selected poets were called on to perform for the second round. And instead of making things easier, the second round only increased our difficulty as all the poets stepped up and raised the bar a notch higher. But what has to be done, must be done. After consolidating the scores of both rounds, all the judges reached a consensus to finalise the top-four performers. Himadri Sharma took the top spot with a powerful poem in Hindi, backed by an equally moving performance that cause goosebumps in the audience. 2nd spot was awarded to Anubhav Bansal, whose humour and easy style was highly infectious. 3rd and 4th spots went to IshjotJaggi and Vedant Rathor respectively. After being hit by COVID, like everything else, poetry went online but offline events are making a comeback and Pune has a buzzing scene for poetry and other literary forms. Environmentalist and media veteran B N Kumar has been nominated for the ‘Revolutionary Comrade Shiv Varma Media Award 2022-23’, instituted by not-for-profit People’s Mission. He shares the award with Suresh Nautiyal of Uttarakhand who is among the founders of the India Greens Party, registered with the Election Commission of India. People’s Mission is a Companies Act-registered outfit with professionals such as doctors, literati, journalists, economists, agriculture and environment specialists, trade and union workers and book publishers and distributors on its board of directors. The organisation set up the awards in memory of Shiv Verma (1907-1997), an associate of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, who was sentenced to ‘Kaala Paani’ jail in ho Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He was among the few freedom fighters who survived the British ruler's torture in jail. Acknowledging the Award intimation, Kumar said he dedicates it to the teams of fellow environment crusaders such as Nandakumar Pawar, Sunil Agrawal, Nareshchandra Singh and Jyoti Nadkarni. “We have miles to go, but together we shall succeed in spreading public awareness about the continuous assault on the environment by various authorities,” he said. The awards will be presented on Independence Day next year. The People’s Mission Award winners for the last year included: Dainik Bhaskar for their resistance against authoritarian pressure by the government agencies and Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui who was killed in Afghanistan by right reactionary Taliban forces. City-based palliative care facility Sparsh Hospice organised its annual fundraising night ‘Sparsh Nite’ on Friday night in the city at Shilpakala Vedika, Madhapur. Somesh Kumar, Chief Secretary; Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Government of Telangana graced as chief guests for the play. Speaking on the occasion Mr Somesh Kumar said that it is a matter of great pride that Sparsh Hospice has served 5000 patients who were in the end stage of cancer. The home care service provided by it is the most valuable service. Getting Cancer is a big trauma and taking care of the affected person is an even bigger trauma. Fortunately, we have this facility with 65000 sq ft and is India’s biggest palliative care facility. And he assured me that if there is anything the government can do to run it smoothly, we are just a call away, and he assured the management of Sparsh Hospice. ‘Blame it on Yashraj’, was a Bollywood musical comedy about an Indian family caught in the whirlwind of a wedding. Sparsh Hospice-Centre for Palliative Care, a project of Rotary Club of Banjara Hills Charitable Trust, aims to extend free-of-cost palliative care services to terminally-ill patients through in-patient, out-patient and home-care services. Palliative Care is the care given to terminally ill patients. Sparsh Hospice is an 82 bedded new facility at Khajaguda. I will be the hero of my biopic. I don't want anyone else to play my role if at all any biopic is made on me in future said Padmashri Jadav Molai Payeng, popularly known as "Forest man of India". The man who is said to have planted more than 4 crore trees was addressing India's biggest gathering of Environmental professionals representing some of the best-known corporate houses and public sector undertakings, and government bodies. He was addressing them on the opening day of the two-day National Summit on Tuesday in Hotel Taj Vivanta in Guwahati. Jadav Molai Payeng graced the meeting as a guest of honour at the National Summit being organised by the New Delhi-based Greentech Foundation. Replying to a question that hundreds of documentaries were already made about you and we understand that the plans were on the anvil to make a Bollywood movie on your life journey and who would you want your role to be in the movie. Na..Na..na...he said and added that “I will do my role. I may not know acting, but still, I can live in that role. What else a director or movie buff wanted, he replied. Explaining his journey to 250 plus who is who of environment professionals drawn from across India, he said, the only thing I know is planting trees. And I continue to do so till my last breath. He shared his new mission to make Mexico greener. He spoke about NGO Azteca, where he collaborated on environmental projects in Mexico which aim to plant 7 million trees in that country. At the end of his talk, he also received a standing ovation from the audience when the emcee summarised his achievements as one man who has been planting trees for 43 years and developed a forest of 550 hectares and planted 4 crore plus saplings. The forest Molai Kathoni, located near Kokilamukh in Assam’s Jorhat district, is now the home to tigers, elephant herds, deer, rabbits and a wide diversity of native and migratory species and thousands of trees. India is a slow, slow country. Things move very slow, unlike some of the countries I visited, he said. Though there was little difficulty in understanding his accent, the audience paid rapt attention to what he said. I always think about what I can do for my country. I am least bothered what my country can do for me, he said.

I am euphoric to share that I've received an Honorary Doctorate of Science, D.Sc (Honoris Causa) for my contribution to the field of research and innovation from Triune Biblical University Global Extension, USA. My point here is not to impress you with what I have worked at. It is to share with you how opportunities constantly arise as you pursue any given course. It’s been said that life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans. Of prime importance is that you realize that learning doesn’t end with your graduation; it begins. Here are a few points or learning tools that I’d like to share and which I hope you will find useful. I’ll start with a little poem I like called the Hobo’s Prayer which goes like this: I don’t know what I’m looking for But I know I’m looking for something I only hope I recognize it when I find it. To me, it means ‘keep your eyes open. You never know when something or someone valuable will appear. Once your eyes are open, I believe learning how to learn is paramount. Trying to learn by collecting individual facts is hopeless; knowledge expands too rapidly. Only by pursuing learning habits and strategies that are global will you be able to keep pace. Imagine the difference between trying to learn something as complex as a golf swing by analyzing each motion and performing it sequentially. Contrast this with developing a type of motion camera in your brain that allows you to mentally film and imitates the swing of a pro. I think you’ll find it a lot easier and with practice it’s possible. Another prime example of learning how to learn is to view every interaction as an experiment and to remember to collect the data and analyze it. Too many non-successful patterns are repeated simply because the participant forgot to record the results and alter behaviour appropriately to achieve a more desired result. Clear communication is another key to goal achievement. Connect empathically with others. Always try to first understand what someone is telling you. Check with them to make sure you understand correctly. Only after this is accomplished can you effectively try to make yourself understood. Question Everything. I’ve often heard ‘don’t try to reinvent the wheel’ but why not? Recently someone did and the way we parallel park will soon be changed forever. Now is nearly always the best time. When I have a question about anything, however trivial it might seem, I write it down and research it at the earliest opportunity. The subconscious mind is a powerful thing and it’s a pleasant surprise when you notice how often research is timely. Say ‘yes’ to everything. Work indeed expands to fill available time but it's more interesting to me that time expands to accommodate necessary work. Give someone all day to sweep the warehouse and that’s what it will take. Give them an hour and tell them after it’s done you have more challenging work for them, and it will be done in an hour. Adaptation. We live in a rapidly changing world. A study of nature leads me to believe adaptation is the key to survival. Whatever you pursue make sure you keep current with current events and how they may affect your plans. OK. Let’s sum it up: Learning is all about exploration however it is not enough to wander in a dream state. Knowledge is its reward, but the accumulation of knowledge requires presence; one’s eyes must be open—retention and analysis need to be engaged. Properly viewed, all learning is a creative process. There is time and place for learning in solitude, in pairs and in groups however first and foremost to me is the importance of a ‘beginner’s mind’—being able to approach an investigation without preconception. Seen in a mathematical context, the patterns of construct in a musical composition can exhibit similarities with the principles of physics or contract law. Personally, it’s been important to allow my inquisitiveness to range freely. It’s not enough to have a great idea; you need to be able to communicate the concept, illuminate and inspire to realize the successful attainment of a goal. When seeking team members with whom to share your vision I believe an elevator pitch is of paramount importance. Be ready and able to share your vision verbally in three minutes. Refining a statement like this will also aid in making it clear to yourself what your true goals are. Perhaps above all, success is predicated on ‘fun’. Find an area of interest that rewards you with the thrill and joy of discovery because no amount of financial reward will compensate for a life spent doing something you don’t enjoy. If you’re truly excited about what you spend your time and attention on, the day will never be tedious. On the contrary, it will never be long enough.
