  • What Poetry Means to Me? - Amrita Valan

Robert Frost said, ‘A poem begins in delight but ends in wisdom.’ I couldn’t agree more. To even write about what poetry means to me, is an immensely joyful stress-relieving exercise. Then imagine what actually writing poetry, constructing a verse, following a trend of thought can do. I spent four hours today at my Mac, trying to meet deadlines and commitments before the month-end. It was a bright sunny afternoon at four when I started, and the world gradually got dark outside my window, while I was lost in a wonderful internal world, where rhyme and resonance, alliteration and simile, tight metaphors came alive and painted a high-resolution picture of where I wanted to go, the world I wanted to…not just visualize, but create. That’s right. Poets are makers, world builders, in ways differing from the fictional world-building that prose entails. The world of a story is self-contained and fits the plot and theme like a snug glove for a story to be authentic. The poetic world is blurred, universal, ethereal, even while employing concrete images, it hints at abstracts that are higher than my highest aspiration. It leaves something to chance, to wonder upon, to mystify. (Speculative fiction does that too.) I know I have succeeded, when I am at a tantalizing threshold, of sharp discontent, because the Muse smiles at me, and says, ‘This far, but no further.’ Going beyond that point is a poetic hope of Nirvana, a blissful Mukti, or liberation. When I am at that taut threshold, words come to me, which, I kid you not, I did not even know existed in my vocabulary, and to my astonishment, the meaning of the word is almost exactly that which I wished to convey. This is not to say I won’t employ conscious craft, twinning the two processes, till at a point they merge, and one is indistinguishable from the other. I can and do weep for joy then. Since saying I feel such and such, is not demystifying the process, let me try. I was writing about wanton excesses of a mythical woman, and the adjective that persistently occurred to me was ‘Liberace’ a pianist known for his flamboyance, also associated with the blingy house of Liberace jewellery. (Remember the Friends episode where Joey forces a tawdry gold bracelet on Chandler?). I dismissed it, to use the staid ‘liberated’, but the word buzzed around my brain, wouldn’t let go, so I finally used it. And an entire verse fell into place, as the lady came to life. So, poetry, whether I read it or write it, brings me great joy, catharsis and stress relief. But it also makes me a better human being. I am going to be a wee bit mushy and say, when life hardens me, poetry keeps me soft. It reminds me we are a family, and not just a human family, not just a living family of all beings, but that our indestructible atoms will disband from their earthly ties, becoming much more one day. I visualise meeting mother in a ray of the moon and being a tiny cloud that covers her. Poetry teaches me that death the inevitable must have dirges, just as life must have lyricism. We will be gone, as far as our material form goes, but the concentrated essence of what we signified, what valuation we placed on tangibles and intangibles, will remain in our words. Poetry then to me, confers immortality. Not of this fickle transient body but the interactive empathetic impressionable mind. Our new age philosopher Jason Silva stopped me in my tracks, as he described a Mexican legend about the three deaths all of us die. ‘The first death’, he said, with that habitual twinkle in his eyes, ‘is that moment when you are first made aware of your mortality, that you are going to die one day. The second death is when you actually die, your physical cessation. But the third death? It is the last time; someone says your name.’ So unless you are a celebrity, when the last person who knew you is gone, your name will most probably never be said aloud again. You will be wiped off of human collective memory. This third death, I call death by negative poetry or the poetry of absence. Word is our last life-giver; word keeps our memory alive. Is it a coincidence, the Bible begins to describe, genesis or creation, with, ‘In the beginning was the Word. And the word was with God?’ God the creator as the ultimate poet, Brahma the poet god dreaming creation into reality, our earliest mythology and heroic poetry as our identity, as a race, as a nation, as humanity. Goodness! Poetry does mean an awful lot to me then, doesn’t it? A mesmerizing exercise in joy and the sheer exhilarating nobility of elevated thoughts, a soothing cathartic balm, a standard of valuation that guides and determines my character and the deepest principles of inner truth it responds to, a bestower of immortality and Prophetic mirror of our transitory nature. Yet poetry my friends, mean more than even this, that it confers upon me the privilege of creation, but that it blesses me with connections. I am a seer of the future and the past through poetry, and I touch base with you, my readers, in the present, in this rough and tumble world of rude reality. Poetry is my portal to the unknown, beyond the lintel of comfort zones, the gatekeeper of my grief and also the medium I gauge truth by. Because it seeks the truth, it keeps me very honest, real and grounded while I reach out for the sun, moon and stars. And whatever lies beyond my wildest imagination. I came to you to seek a friend I found a guide with a hand to lend I found a teacher in my heart And became the lover of your art © Amrita Valan 2021

  • India’s First Keto-Friendly, Sugar-Free Chocolate Brand Puts Foot In The Market

Razzle chocolates, an Ahmedabad-based company has launched its range of chocolates which are vegan, keto-friendly, pro diabetic, and are also gluten and soy-free. The idea of the company emerged when this young boy of 25 years saw how much people craved sweetness when they had to control it. Watching their emotional turbulence, he aimed to use his hotel management and marketing knowledge to create something cool. As it is said what you seek seeks you, this turned into reality when he met Lt. Colonel Dr Awaneesh Pandey who runs his diabetic clinic and is a wellness coach too. Under his expert metabolic guidance, he created Razzle chocolates with the use of Erythritol. “We were extremely happy to announce the launch of Razzle bars on social media. We aimed to make the basic pleasures of life accessible to all and this truly is dream come true. This gives them the much-needed guilt-free chocolate experience. Our nation is advancing towards becoming the Diabesity capital due to the higher amount of sugar & carbs in our day-to-day diet. A bar of regular dark chocolate contains around 40-60 grams of added sugar (on average) which makes this a luxury for people who can’t consume it. On the contrary, Razzle bars provide a sugarless experience. Such high sugar in regular chocolate bars has made the simple pleasure of having chocolate a sinful luxury that many people now cannot afford.” - Dr Awaneesh Pandey The Razzle bars are currently available by order from their Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/razzle_chocolates/). They currently have five flavors; Rich in Cashew, Rich In Almond, Pistachio Haze, Nut Mosaic, and Chilli Cinnamon. The journey started in 2020 amidst lockdown and they received so much love from people. The brand is now handled by the mother-son duo who are looking forward to hitting their big milestone. “We are planning to set up a facility for producing 1000 chocolate bars a day by the end of 2022. We aim to sell 100 chocolate bars a day initially and then scale it up to 1000 bars a day by the end of the year 2022. We are also planning to increase the flavours from the existing 5 to 20 over the coming months.” he added. This new chocolate is surely going to change the dimensions of the fitness world.

  • What's Wrong with Self Promotion? - Amrita Valan

What do people have against self-promotion? Especially people who don't write, perform any of the arts or paint themselves? Why do they criticize self-promotion? I want to disseminate what I write. I want a wider audience than my Facebook wall can provide. If the groups I post in allow it, what axe do such folks have to grind here? It is not spam, it's not mindless advertising, it's my labour of love provided free of cost for your enjoyment and my greater visibility! How does it affect this self-appointed brigade of people? Isn't this attempted censorship? Isn't it co-opting the promotion of the arts? That any recognition that you get should come through proper 'official' channels only? That smacks of bureaucracy and red tape at best, nepotism and hegemony at worst. Someone inboxes me, that it excites jealousy. I am advised not to show overt enthusiasm in acknowledging acceptances. How is your jealousy, my problem friend? Do you think I'm incapable of jealousy? I am an adult. I can control my momentary envy. I can rise higher than my petty instinct, to recognise the hard work and achievements of others. Please don't scare me with your jealousy. Please allow my growth through the promotion of my own poems and stories. Self-publishing is actually self-promotion. If you're ok with that, you should be ok with this. My writes stand on their own merit for the likes of others. You need not like it if you're so annoyed that I dared to promote myself in any other place but my Facebook wall post. But who are you, to decide and determine where a person should promote herself? What is wrong with promotion exactly? Some say it is personal promotion, and in bad taste. My friends, I am not promoting Amrita, the person, but the work, a poem, a painting or a story. Which falls under the aegis of Art. And Art is universal. As for taste, good or bad, my work is bound to be linked to my name, so if you like my work, you may come back to read more. This is not personal promotion to aggrandize oneself, but to find acceptance, a niche for one’s work. It is common sense. If I am promoting my ink in an unsuitable group, say Science and Astronomy, Cooking or buying and selling of consumer goods or real estate, that would be objectionable and disagreeable But, surely in a group that showcases poetry, painting, memoirs recollections, opinion pieces humour et all, it is perfectly natural? All the great groups of internationally published writers I belong to on Facebook encourage every one of its members to Share! Share! And Share! To promote their talent to showcase their work. Everywhere I submit my work I am actually instructed to promote on Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, my own pages and yes all the groups that allow it, groups with similar interests, content and theme. Are such esteemed and experienced littérateurs wrong? Why look down your noses on self-promotion then? If you say it commercializes art, oh! don't make me laugh, please! One individual sharing her labour of love, or her published articles cannot possibly open the floodgates of commerce. Every anthology published tries to break even. If it makes a profit, then does the artwork inside die because it made a profit? And so it becomes commercializing Art? © Amrita Valan 2021

No matter what activity you do, be it running or exercising, it is bound to make you fitter if it gives you a sense of satisfaction. The body must be free from diseases and any extra amount of fat or cholesterol, and I strongly believe that the person who feels healthy and is super-charged is always fit. 2. How do you keep a healthy balance between your mind and your body? I always try to keep a tab on the portion of whatever I eat. A healthy and balanced diet is crucial as our bodies need several nutrients to stay fit, 3. Following your demanding and hectic routine, how do you manage to stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle? I always keep my diet according to my workload and schedule and never try to maintain any hardcore diet for my fitness. I give my body the right amount of fuel it needs. Whenever I am shooting an action sequence, I fuel myself with a heavy breakfast and lunch and, more importantly, keep my body hydrated by drinking lots of water. 4. What is your ideal workout regime? For me, an ideal workout is something that charges me up and energizes me to the fullest, other than making me tired. I generally don’t work out daily since I have a very hectic schedule at shoots. It is 3-4 days a week that I try to catch up with my workout session. I believe in an effective workout and try to efficiently follow it rather than working out for longer sessions. 5. Your roles require you to maintain a fit body, what did you incorporate in your fitness regime? Before this show, I used to do more weightlifting and body-building workouts. I like upbeat music and adrenaline rushing music during the workouts. 8. What motivates you towards fitness? I don’t feel the need for any motivation to remain fit. Staying healthy means that a lot of medical expenses can be taken care of (laughs). Being fit for me is very necessary, and everyone should realize its importance on their own, instead of someone else motivating you. 9. Any Fitness tips for your fans? The only tip for my fans is to everything they desire but always in control. One should always eat according to the workload and daily schedule. • RETHINK, REDEFINE AND REINVEST By Monalisa Singh

Devanshi is a 33-year-old woman, married for 7 years and a mother of 4 years old baby. She was a scholar in her college days and was the first to land up with a lucrative job. She was intelligent and was doing so well in her professional career but ended up quitting the job after she gave birth to a kid. Reason? There was nobody to support her in looking after her baby, nor was any work from home option available to her. Faced with this quandary, she decided to take a break from her professional career and devote her time to bringing up her kid. She thought that she would restart her career after the sabbatical required to raise her kid. How many of you can relate to Devanshi? Many perhaps! Many of you would have gone through this phase of life; taking the tough decision of quitting a job for the sake of your family. It is a story that syncs with the lives of many women. Every human being has to go through a phase of transition in his/her life. But when it comes to women, though the transition from being a girl, a daughter, a wife and a mother, is similar to the male counterpart, yet the hardship faced by women and challenges associated with each of the phases is quite different, having different magnitude. There will always be a continuous challenge and societal pressure for women to cope up with. Women will always find themselves in many quirky expectations like “damned if they do" and "damned if they don't". Whether you are a housewife or a working woman, you can achieve your dream. Just because you have grown older while taking care of your family responsibilities, doesn't mean you can't find career ideas to get work and become financially independent. In fact, this is the period of your life where you are more independent and have enough time to develop skills and learn a new hobby. In the past, once motherhood is attained, women lives changed drastically and her identity used to get lost in her motherhood. But now, slowly and steadily, things are changing for good. Now, women too are in search of an identity for themselves, want to be independent and have an urge to chase their dreams. Here are some career options from which you can choose to start walking and cross that white picket fence. 1. TEACHING AND TRAINING Teachers and trainers share information with an audience to help them learn new information and though teaching is a great second career many might not have eligibility and also to some people teaching in the classroom might not be appealing. Thanks to technology teaching and training are now no longer limited to classroom jobs. In fact, the pandemic has opened many new ways to teach and train your audience. If you have a background in teaching you can also target jobs related to HR or training or combine both and be a training coordinator. You need to enhance your skill a little bit and there you go into a whole new world of imparting knowledge. 2. IMAGE CONSULTING Image consulting is one of the best careers options as it comes with working flexibility. It also helps you to earn well. TRANSLATOR/INTERPRETER Think back to school days and recollect how we used to crib for so many language classes in our school. This is the right time to brush those skills and remember what all learnt. To be a translator you need to learn a language/s, translation skill. Many companies nowadays need a translator and you can be one. 5. FREELANCE WRITER A freelancer is a person who works on their own. They work for their client and charge money for it. And for this career, you don't need a specific age. Writing is an excellent career choice as it gives complete flexibility and freedom to work from anywhere. And the best part is you don't even need any certificates or training. If you have a good command of the language and have a penchant for vocabulary, this might just be for you. Just polish your skills, get access to your PC and write. As a freelancer, you can write articles, develop contents, blog or you can even connect with some publication house. Yes, for this you will have to have proper networking. 6. ARTISTS Do you love to express your thoughts through your art? For artists, it's never late to show skills. To be one, make your portfolios, show it on social media, networking is again a good way to showcase your skill, try to get projects. Use some innovation. You can work to make professional videos, animation or picture editing. 7. CATERING All your life you have cooked food and know the nitty-gritty of it. So why not choose it as a profession. But in addition to providing delicious and hygienically prepared food, you also will need to understand that this job involves transporting and serving foods at events. Other than this you must be aware of the financial aspect of the food business as well as marketing and customer service. You will have to apply for a license as it is mandatory as per the FSSAI rules. Navigating through a career change or starting afresh can be daunting and exhilarating at the same time. It can be a scary experience but also is exciting. The first job to do successfully is the job of aligning your thinking with what you wish to do and where would you like to end up. So think and rethink it. The key should be to recognize that you are not just reinventing your career but are also redefining yourself as a human being because the process starts from the inside out. Understand your WHY, look inward, invest outward, take a skill inventory, remove your biggest obstacle and rebrand yourself. Don't delay your future further! Prepare yourself for a great career. Who said there will be no roadblock but never stop pushing yourself. Believe in yourself! And you will shine!
