  • Men in Blue : Breaching fortresses and breaking records - An Article By Ashwin Jangam

Earlier this year, the Indian team breached the Aussie fortress Gabba which was undefeated for 32 years. After being bundled for 36 in the Adelaide Oval, the Indians replied to the humiliating defeat by winning the immediate next encounter in Melbourne, which was the last game of 2020 for both teams. With the stand-in skipper Ajinkya playing the captain's knock by scoring a hundred, India roared back to resurrect at the MCG. The first match of 2021 was equally worth remembering when Ravichandran Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari , both severely injured, pulled out an almost impossible draw at the SCG. The cherry on the pie, however, was the victory at Gabba. With half, of the team injured, the bunch of youngsters led by Rahane breached the Gabba, where Aussies had a stronghold. For the second consecutive time, the touring India team won. The year had started with a bang. Since then, the Men in Blue are on a roll. After their heroics in Gabba, they turned out to be victorious in the Mecca of cricket, Lord's for the first time after 2014. They followed it by having a lead in the series by 2-1. Continuing their overseas dream run, the Men in Blue breached the Protea's fortress Centurion, becoming the first team from Asia to win a test match at the venue. The match, which everyone thought would be a fighting encounter, turned out to be a rather one-sided game. Winning the toss, skipper Virat chose to bat. The decision was proven right by both the Indian openers. Both stuck to the basics and played the new ball well. Mayank fell after scoring a fifty, but Rahul reached his century in style. He was accompanied well by Rahane, who looked solid, but fell short of his fifty by 2 runs. Even though Indians suffered a collapse on the 3rd day, the Indian pace attack ensured a good lead for them. The second innings of India didn't last for too long, but the run-a-ball cameos from Rahane and Pant gave them a quick lead and helped them set a target quickly. The Indian seamers yet again made sure the Protea batsmen didn't get to extend their arms often and put pressure on them by scalping 4 wickets on a penultimate day, with the 4th wicket coming on the last ball of the day. In a matter of time, after some resistance from the test skipper and T20 skipper of South Africa, the Proteas fell after the dismissal of the former. The Indian bowlers had done their job to create history at the Centurion, despite rain trying to play spoilsport on the second day. Usually, India is known for their batting, but their bowling attack has tremendously improved since the last year, and they owe the victories to the pace and spin attack. The trio of Shami, Bumrah and Siraj made life difficult for Proteas batters by bowling tight lengths and lines and scalping 8, 5 and 3 wickets respectively in the match. Thakur played his part well by dismissing the experienced Quinton De Cock in the first innings. The enthusiasm of Siraj was loved by the fans and he celebrated it in the way CR7 does. While the bowlers did an amazing job, most experienced batters of both teams were dismissed in the area of their concern in both the innings. With Virat dismissed both the times trying to drive the ball far away from off stump, De Cock made way to the pavilion edging the ball on the inner side of his bat, uprooting the stumps in both the innings. However, other Indian players reached to a few milestones in this test. With Shami scalping 200 wickets in tests overall, Bumrah crossed his century of wickets away from home. Rishabh also made his century of catches as a wicket-keeper. But irrespective of individual accolades, the complete team effort, with the team playing firmly as a unit has won Men in Blue matches. As a team, India has played exceptionally well this year, barring their performance in ICC events. The WTC final loss and the early exit from the T20 world cup were disheartening. Furthermore, all of it was followed by the drama between the captaincy change and the miscommunication of BCCI and the players. But eventually, everything ended well, which is reflected in today's historic victory. Despite all the difficulties, Men in Blue have given a lot of opportunities for Indians to smile their hearts out. The series victory over England and Black Caps in-home, and victories in SENA countries barring New Zealand, have made a stronger case to call India the best test team at this moment. What makes it even special is the contribution of many players with less experience. The likes of Shubhman Gill , Washington Sundar , Shardul Thakur , Axar Patel , Shreyas Iyer helped India win matches when it was required. While Mayank has always proved his worth, the rise of Siraj after he lost his father this year is the best thing ever happened to Indian cricket. Looking at the longest and the oldest format of the game, the future of the Indian team looks bright. How good it will be, only time will tell. But 2021 will always be remembered as one of the best years for Indian cricket, particularly about red-ball cricket. The Indian cricket fans will never forget it. • Godrej Ezee and Gul Panag join hands for ‘Ezee Hugs’

Liquid detergent brand Godrej Ezee and actress & entrepreneur Gul Panag join hands to raise awareness of winter-related hardships faced by underprivileged kids as part of Ezee Hugs. Currently, in its 12th edition, Ezee Hugs is a social campaign that aims to provide warmth to underprivileged children during harsh winters by distributing free sweaters. To flag off the initiative, Gul Panag met the kids in New Delhi and distributed new sweaters amongst them. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the number of human death in India due to cold waves is much higher than due to heat waves between 1980-2018. There has been a 506% increase in cold waves in India from 2010 to 2018. Thousands of underprivileged, school-going children across the Northern belt, bear the harsh winters without the warmth of woollens. Due to lack of woollen wear, the kids are also more prone to suffer from viral fever and cold. Godrej Ezee wanted to build awareness about these winter-related hardships and alleviate them. Thus, it started the Ezee Hugs campaign. Over the years, Ezee Hugs has spread warmth by urging people to donate their woollens for children through this social good campaign. Given the need to bring the attention of more people to winter-hardships of children, Gul Panag has collaborated with Godrej Ezee this year. Known as an actress, entrepreneur, pilot, Gul is also a true humanitarian, and has always stood for causes close to heart. She runs an NGO – the Colonel Shamsher Singh Foundation, named after a grandfather, which works in the area of education, and gender equality. Gul will use her platform to support the cause and spread awareness amongst the public. While Ezee Hugs urges people to donate sweaters themselves amongst underprivileged kids, Ezee and Gul will jointly distribute more than 4000 sweaters across North India. Speaking on this initiative, Sunil Kataria, CEO - India & SAARC, Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL), “Godrej Ezee has always stood for warmth, comfort and care. Ezee Hugs, a noble initiative by Ezee that began in 2011, has grown over the years with the support of multiple stakeholders. This year, we are pleased to partner with Gul Panag who is known to take up causes that matter. Her social and political activism has had her being recognized as one of the most influential voices on social media and a youth icon. We intend to not just donate sweaters but also bring the attention of more people to this issue. We want to ensure that no underprivileged child suffers due to lack of appropriate means to keep themselves warm.” While speaking about her association with Ezee Hugs, Gul Panag, said, “For someone who has lived in North India, winter-related hardships faced by underprivileged kids is something not many talks about or even acknowledge. From health impact to school attendance, the impact of cold weather on kids with no proper woollen wear is significant. Yet, fewer initiatives or people are talking about it. Ezee Hugs is one such initiative that has stood strong and made people aware of this issue for over 10 years now. This is why I chose to partner with Godrej Ezee so that we can reach out to more people and ensure no underprivileged kid has to be without woollens. “I have fond memories of winter, cosying up and enjoying the cold with my friends and family. I wear up to three layers of sweaters during this time of the year. At the same time, I realize that this is a privilege that not many of us have. I’m honoured to associate with Godrej Ezee for such a thoughtful initiative. I would like to encourage people to donate as much as they can and help the children” About Godrej Consumer Products Ltd Godrej Consumer Products is a part of the over 124-year-young Godrej Group. • Pushkar Sharma : The rising star signs a contract with Moj

Pushkar Shivkumar Sharma is a name known in the Mumbai Cricket world as well as the Kenyan cricketing world. The southpaw has garnered the attention of cricket fans with his amazing batting style. His popularity is the reason, he is often offered to endorse brands, the latest of which is the Moj application. He received a contract from Moj last month. He was extremely happy to receive the contract and said "It's an honour for me to receive the contract from Moj. Moj is used by so many superstars and celebrities, and to get a chance from a platform this big is a very special feeling for me. I am extremely thankful for them to consider me. Also, I would like to thank Media Hunt who made this contract possible ". While Pushkar Sharma is happy for this achievement, his fans and well wishes knew something of this coming his way, looking at the fan following he enjoys. His hard-earned following is a result of his dedication to the game. His success is not overnight, he has gone through a lot, to reach this level. Hailing from Hathras in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, the boy, at a mere age of 9 shifted to Mumbai alone for the love of his game. He was a naturally talented player. And he toiled hard to further hone his skills. He developed his natural attacking ability. Speaking about him, many experts said "Pushkar Sharma's flick shots are God gifted". With his skills, he had impressed everyone in the Mumbai circuit. Resultant of this, he was named the captain of the Mumbai U-16 squad. He was the captain of the squad who had talented players like Prithvi Shaw, Agni Chopra, Arjun Tendulkar, Pranav Dhanawade and many others. He led the Mumbai U-16 team well. On his captaincy debut itself, he displayed his immense determination. He came to the crease when the team were stuck at 24/5 and led the team to 260 odd runs playing a crucial knock of 63 runs. Everything was going right for him. Looked like he was the upcoming superstar India was waiting for. But a tragedy struck his family. His beloved father, whose dream was to see his son play for India, was no more. The sudden demise of his father left a wound on Pushkar's mind, which is yet unfilled. In complete distraught, he left cricket for a while. But to accomplish the dream of his father, he took the sport once again off. But it was not going to be difficult. As the financial responsibility of his family came off the 17-year-old, it was difficult for him to focus on both. At this time, he was supported by India first Life Insurance. Praveen Menon sir of India first Life Insurance provided him with the job and selected him to play for their cricket team. And he did not disappoint them. He won matches for the team. Till today India first Insurance continues to support Pushkar and has extended their support till 2022 end. But the competition in Indian cricket was immense, which resulted in him not getting enough opportunities. Owing to further opportunities, he had to take a few tough decisions. Indiafirst yet again supported him in this decision. Pushkar got an offer to work and play for Hirani Telecommunications in Nairobi, Kenya. After a lot of thinking, he took the difficult decision to leave his beloved motherland and shift to Kenya for further opportunities. Adapting to the situations quickly, Pushkar's bat showed class in Nairobi. His natural ability to attack helped him play the T20's in Kenya. He was named the captain of Ruaraka Sports Club. This was a great chance for him to showcase his leadership qualities again. In the latest NPCL, he led his team from front, playing the skipper's innings often. He amassed 841 runs in the tournament. While doing so, he scored 4 magnificent centuries, 3 half-centuries. He also completed the century of boundaries in the tournament. His efforts helped Ruaraka Sports Club finish in the top 4 for the first time in NPCL. As they say, talent finds its way. Likewise, Pushkar Sharma, an immensely talented player, with his hard work has found his way. In near future, we wish to see him playing at the highest level of cricket for Kenya. It's great to see companies like Moj encouraging him to grow further. Also, it is heartening to see the support of Indiafirst Life Insurance to Pushkar through his thick and thin. With the wishes of his fans, support of the organization, and with his extremely hard work and dedication, we wish to see this fighter accomplish the dream of his father soon. • Women's IPL : A dream yet underachieved - An Article By Ashwin Jangam

As Per, ESPN CRICINFO, A WBBL final which brought a record crowd and records TV ratings could herald a shift towards more primetime matches in the future as the tournament looks to its next stage of evolution. Indian Premier League, the name is known to almost every person who follows the game across the globe. The most popular franchise cricket league in the world has garnered the attention of fans as well as cricketers. Every cricketer, whether Indian or foreign player, wishes to play in IPL to witness the grand event at least once. The scale of the event attracts many sponsors, resulting in making BCCI the richest cricketing board. The BCCI takes immense pride in hosting the event. However, the same BCCI does not consider the idea of Women's IPL. The main untold reason for them not to consider the hosting of the same event for Women's cricket, is they are afraid to make less or no profit out of it. They are unsure if the Women's league can give them some revenue. Contradicting their views, leagues of franchise cricket for Women's like WBBL and English Premier League turned out to be a huge success in terms of revenue as well as viewership. The experience of playing in these leagues have helped the Indian women cricketers to improve their game tremendously. I have already shared an article about the performance of Indians in WBBL. Likewise, the WIPL, if happening would be a boon to Indian women's cricket. The experience of sharing the dressing room with the international stars from a different team would be enthralling for local players. This would improve their game tremendously, giving them a boost. The same happened in the T20 challenge when the upcoming stars for Women in Blue, Simran Bahadur and Kashvee Gautam and others told how sharing the dressing room with experienced players helped them improve the game. Seeing Sophie Ecclestone, Danielle Wyatt, Sune Luus play motivated the young players to up their level. The phenomenal dive by Natthakan Chantam to save a boundary helped Indian players set a benchmark for their fielding. These instances leave a long-lasting positive impact on the upcoming players. But, even after knowing this, BCCI is reluctant to have WIPL. The reason they give is "we don't have that much depth to conduct a Women's IPL". However, depth is not a matter of concern, as India has as many as 100+ players who have done well in the domestic circuit. As pointed out by India born former Aussie skipper Lisa Sthlaker, if the senior challenger trophy can have 4 teams of 15 players each, which excluded 12 players from the India -Australia series and 10 more players who have played for more than 3 years at the international level, India have at least 82 players ready for the WIPL. The addition of a few international players will make the depth even greater. In all, If there are 120 players overall, including Indian and overseas players, there can easily be 6 teams with a squad of 20 each. The squad of 30 in Men's IPL is just to ensure more young players are participating in the league, however, at the max 15-16 players get a chance to actually play. Likewise, if instead of having a squad of 30 players, a squad of 20 would be good enough for everyone to get the opportunity in the WIPL. The immense talent pool would be benefit by the league. But the greed of cash-rich BCCI is not allowing to do so. BCCI wants to emulate the success of men's IPL, which is difficult due to less viewership for women's matches in India. Until the viewership of both men's and women's games comes at the same level, BCCI won't start WIPL. While doing so, they fail to realise, the WIPL could also be one of the major factors for Indian cricket fans to move to women's cricket, thereby increasing the viewership of not just the WIPL matches, but also all the matches where Women in Blue would play. The CEO of KKR, Venky Mysore is extremely supportive of conducting the WIPL, in spite of knowing the losses his franchise can incur. In clear words, he said that sometimes "we need to just start the things instead of looking at the business and revenue point of it". If the franchise owners, who enter the leagues for business, are supportive of WIPL knowing that there won't be any profit for a few seasons, the board which is set up for promoting and developing the game should definitely consider it. No one knows how long it will take to really achieve this dream of WIPL. But cricket experts across the globe are wishing it to happen. Stars like Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy, Danielle Wyatt have again and again mentioned about the best thing that could happen to promote the women's game would be WIPL. For now, the dream may be unachieved, but we can be sure that if every franchise owners think like Venky Mysore and go on to show their love for the game, WIPL will be an accomplished dream initially, and success in the seasons to come. For now, as cricket fans, we hope it happens, and it alleviates the level of Women's cricket in India and across the globe, bringing glory to the sport.
