  • Education for Sustainability: Dr Pratik Mungekar

Today, the name of Prof. Dr Pratik Rajan Mungekar is no longer common but is emerging as a distinguished Scientist, Professor, World Educationist, Published Writer, Counsellor, Social Worker and an International Speaker Catch the video of this lecture on https://youtu.be/4wIDJFpWk1Y Quality in education There is no single definition for quality in Education and there is no universal consensus on what is the appropriate strategy to assure and manage quality in higher education. Quality can be defined in terms of excellence, perfection, value for money, and fitness to purpose. Quality in education is a multi-dimensional concept with different components. According to some researchers, the definitions of quality are: Quality is fulfilling & exceeding customers’ needs, Quality is everyone’s job and quality is continuous improvement. Quality is recognition and reward. Quality is leadership, teamwork, measurement and systematic problem-solving. Quality education is a necessity for a sustainable economy of any nation. Sustainability is the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed to maintain a certain state or position. Necessity refers to an imperative requirement or need for something. The trends in the economic activity worldwide show that new methods, techniques and solution to a crisis that may arise in the economy of any nation is vital to avoid the collapse of that economy. Therefore the nations worldwide have been forced to adopt hence the development of newly founded IT programs that facilitate the production in any economy, the use of auto machines in factories etc. The main question is do the custodians of the firms in business possess the necessary skill. Now zeroing into the training and education that an individual would have got quality or the value of it does it make them competent individuals, does that particular skill they possess match that is required in the business market world. What would it mean if they don’t possess the necessary and what if they do? Quality education has got no universally accepted definition however The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, (2010), defines education as the act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills, as for a profession and quality as referring to character concerning fineness, or grade of excellence. The combination of these words however may mean different things depending on the perception of one person to another. Also, The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, (2010), defines quality education as equipping learners with skills and knowledge that would help them develop psychologically and benefit them in future, being able to employ the skills they learnt in their days to day lives to sustain themselves even after graduation. The quality of education provided by institutions however may vary based on multiple factors, the teaching system, programs provided, quality of lecturers, and the learning environment under which the education is being provided. The lecturers in charge of imparting knowledge to students have to be of certain qualifications; therefore a selection procedure has to be followed separating expert lecturers from the mediocre ones living only the best lecturers to do the teaching. Also, the teaching system that a particular institution employs has a detrimental effect on the quality, the kind of system that encourages research, citation and a plagiarism policy would prove more useful than one that does not in providing quality education. Furthermore considering the programs or courses the institution provides they should be relevant to the time and trends of the business world, avoiding the situation where graduates would roam the streets straight after graduation due to a lack of jobs. Furthermore, whether the environment in which teaching is conducted, does it meets the standards to be termed as conducive for learning. Lastly how a particular institution caters for diversity in its students for example catering for those with visual impairment or any other disability and the fact that the students might be of different backgrounds and international cases of different origin. Facilities with the attributes mentioned earlier could be said as those that provide quality education to students who enrol with them. Importance of quality in education Higher education plays an important role for the student and the society in which he lives. It represents the growth of the individual which allows him to lead a better life as there are more chances of getting a highly paid job; in turn, the society is benefited as the ideal citizens are created who will keep the society peaceful. “According to a research done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average earnings become high and the level of unemployment falls, with each education level acquired” provided quality education brings about a glittering future to individuals, society and the whole world at large. Graduates who acquire quality skills and education from their respective institutions are most likely to be employable. If not so the graduates may be able to use what they have learnt to start up their own business for example a graduate from an accountancy college may if they do not find a job or if they so choose, start-up their accountancy consultancy agency offering accounting services and also by being able to employ their skills and start their own business, the graduates would be creating employment for other individuals in the society thus also helping in diversifying the economy of that particular nation investing in its private sector. Tertiary education also helps provide graduates with the basics of understanding economic activities that occur worldwide. A nation that possesses such people would be safe to be termed as a literate nation, a wise nation would in turn be able to prevent and run anti-economic actions such as corruption. Quality education provided to the society inspires creativity and innovation, moreover improves the nation’s economy. Graduates and internship students do interact with the society to share knowledge, help the nation in making the decisions and come up with new ideas for doing things better as stated by the British Council, (2014). That on its increases the productivity of the nation thereby improving its economy. Examples can be alumni from technical college during electricity down a failure; they can apply the knowledge acquired from their programs to make solar street lights with the help of community members. The idea of coming up with solar street lights is creativity, diversification and amending ordinary ones to advance ones. The transition of skills and knowledge from one individual with expertise to another with less expertise would increase experts in that particular thus creating a pool of employees that organizations could recruit from. The graduates with expertise in certain fields would be in a better position to be leaders in their particular field of expertise, therefore good education produces ideal leaders. Negative impacts of lacking quality in education The economy of any state is reliant on its micro and macro economies; however if there is a lack in quality of education provided this would affect factors such as entrepreneurship, creativity, innovation and employability. The failure to invest in the quality of education offered to pupils threatens the long-term competitiveness of the nation’s economy. With the rapid growth of manufacturing and tech jobs, worldwide nations would face a challenge in being economically competitive if the graduates produced do not meet international standards. Due to globalization the students should compete not only with people from their country but also with people throughout the world for jobs. The students should possess some unique skills which make them eligible for the job which is possible only through quality education. The level of entrepreneurship and the level of employment influence household income, which is determined bby determinedGross private domestic investment spending by firms and households which in turn affects the Gross National Product( GNP): which is the output by citizens ( irrespective of where they were produced) at home or abroad. And the Gross Domestic Product (GDP): refers to the output within a given economy over a given period usually one year. This output must be within the boundaries of the country by all the people in that country at the time regardless of nationality. Due to the rapid growth of the global economy, education has become an imperative aspect of innovation, growth and development. Investment in education is an investment in human capital, and a lack of the former equals a lack of the latter. How to improve Quality in Education In a response to tackle, the lack in quality of education tertiary institutions should engage, in project-based learning where students get to learn hands-on, this would ensure that they learn beyond the context of textbooks. The advantage of this initiative is that students would know field experience, unlike the traditional book-based lecturing where students are more likely to memorize the content not master it. Institutions should consider apprenticeships for teaching and lecturing the aim being to equip lecturers with experience and teaching skills before getting to work. While improving quality tertiary institutions should consider adapting to changes in technology blending technology to learning through different platforms. Tertiary institutions should revise their core curriculum and ensure that it meets required standards. The quality of education facilitated by tertiary institutions must be of certain standards. The great Nelson Mandela once said, “education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” Its importance is immeasurable because it is a self-enlighten up process for a lifetime as added by Victor H, This is so because quality education equips one with the capability to interpret things rightly and apply the gathered information in real-life scenarios, therefore it wipes out the wrong beliefs from one’s mind and that makes one civilised and innovative. In summary, quality education is important in anyone’s life, to have it, access to it by all means for sustainability.

Team Stay Featured is feeling extremely proud to have an opportunity to feature all the great names highlighted during TZP Maa Awards We finally had a chance to have an interaction with Anagha Rane-fitness and wellness coach. Let's read what she conveyed to our team Short Introduction of Anagha Rane I am Anagha Rane I am a fitness and wellness coach, I own a fitness studio in Thane and am even associated with 18 + studios all over India. We are a blend of all, Functional training as well as, Cardio workouts with dance moves, I take aerobics as well as regular dance workouts. Fitness was never in my mind, as I am a mother of a 6-year-old kid I always thought it was obvious that post-pregnancy any lady would gain weight. Weight was not an issue for me but it triggered me at that moment where I was unable to take my 2-year-old kid around I had to be dependent upon someone and that's where I decided to take care of myself. I got in touch with my coach through a social media platform and understood the importance of fitness and wellness, I took up a challenge and lost an amazing 9kgs in 5 months. Looking at my transformation people started asking me and that's where I decided to help such mothers and others on their fitness journey. Past 3 years I am following a healthy active lifestyle and we guide people with various programs such as 1. Losing / Gaining / Maintain Weight 2. Digestive Health 3. Joints Health 4. Heart Health 5. Children's Nutrition 6. Energy & Fitness 7. Sports Nutrition & 8. Overall Well-being During a pandemic, we started with an online workout from home, morning and evening batches on zoom. We have our offline studios also going on. Thank you note to TZP Maa Awards & everyone who contributed to my growth I always believe, that Work in silence let success make the noise. Honestly speaking I wasn't expecting this award at all but I had put all my efforts and done whatever was told as for a girl from thane participating in an unknown crowd was a fear factor. But I always believed if you give up in beginning it's hard later on. And with just that one positive thought the price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. This is the third award that I have received as an Entrepreneur (Mompreneur) and I am thoroughly thankful to Sejal Ray admin of Taare Zameen Par Group and Chetna Pakhale Admin of BeYou group for giving me this platform and encouraging me to showcase my skillsets. It's an honour to get associated with the TZP group for me. I would even thank my kid Laksh Rane, for being the best kid and Cooperating and understanding me at such a small age. He always encourages me in my work and he is the true inspiration being I am today. I thank my husband for being my strong support, well talking about him even though he is physically not here, he is always supporting me every single moment, due to work priorities he is out of India in this situation any woman would leave her job and be with her husband but my husband motivated me to live my dreams and be I what I want to be. Thank you hubby for everything. Lastly, I thank my fellow members, my clients, and ambassadors who believed in me and my work and are supporting me now and then to help me grow. Getting into the fitness and wellness industry was never my dream, being from a Marketing background I have worked with various corporate firms as well as in media firms. Post-pregnancy like every individual woman I told had gained weight and I never had an issue with it, being a proud mother always felt this is very common its will as time files, but when my kid was two years old I realized it was difficult for me to take him and move around my stamina was low, I started facing tiredness and I had to be dependent upon someone or the other to pick my child up and I used to take some 1 or 3 kgs to carry bags. That's where it triggered me Anagha if this is the case at the age of 32 what is going to happen at age of 40 or 50 I decided to work on myself. My coach explained to me the need for clean eating habits and made me understand the importance of Illness and Wellness. With my transformation, I started helping many such people recently a lady called me up saying she has to get her dental surgery done but is unable to do it as her diabetes was around 315 and for the past 3.5 yrs it's not coming down even though after taking medicines she is 56 years old. I just asked her about her routine, water intake and lifestyle and just by following a few things and doing some changes in her meal plan, one morning at 10 am she sent me a voice note in 15 days her diabetes was less than 150 made my day like anything, it was not though for her but it was for me as I promised her that she will be able to get her surgery done. There are many such stories its endless, as I am just getting started to help 100 such families get a good health. Message for readers Some people always say I am busy, I don't have time. Time is money etc etc. But just imagine what is the use of that time where you are not going to taste the fruit that you have created if you have bad health. Always remember when it comes to any kind of lifestyle disease or weight issues, it's not just eating habits. It's the 4 factors before eating habits. Factor 1 stress, factor 2 lifestyle, factor 3 water intake, factor 4 sleep timings and last comes factor 5 eating habits. If the first four factors are bad it will affect your fifth factor resulting, in weight issues, PCOD, PCOS, cholesterol, heart attacks, diabetes etc. So I request all to please go and see the root cause take guidance approach a coach who will be your mother or father or a guide to help in your lifestyle. • National Education Policy 2020 Implementation Challenges - Dr Pratik Mungekar

Don't forget to catch up on an amazing Speech by Dr Pratik Mungekar on this link https://www.facebook.com/100002573743880/posts/4983423028420106/?d=n Here it comes a Transcript of the speech A well-defined and futuristic education policy is a must for every country because education is the key driver of economic and social progress. Taking into account their respective traditions and culture, different countries have adopted varied education systems. Recently, the Government of India took a giant leap forward by announcing its new education policy, the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), almost three decades after the last major revision was made to the policy in 1986. The policy has come at the right time and the objective is very noble. But there lies a world of difference between laying down a policy on paper and following it in spirit. The success of NEP 2020 and the pace of its implementation depends to a large extent on how successfully the government, universities and schools can tide over the practical challenges facing it. Highlights of NEP 2020 The new education policy is a positive re-imagination of India’s existing education regime. It has some very impressive and appreciable propositions. The policy envisions a model of holistic learning that is integrated, engaging and immersive. Scientific temper and evidence-based thinking will be inculcated alongside aesthetics and art. The main tenets of this policy are: 1. Flexibility, so that learners can choose their learning trajectories; 2. Equal promotion of arts, sciences, physical education and other extra-curricular activities so that learners can pick whatever piques their interests; 3. Multi-disciplinary approach (across the sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities and sports); emphasis on conceptual learning rather than rote learning; creativity and critical thinking; 4. Cultivating life skills like cooperation, teamwork, empathy, resilience; 5. Regular formative assessment for learning rather than the existing summative assessment. It encourages peer-tutoring as a voluntary and joyful activity for fellow students under the supervision of trained teachers. NEP seeks to facilitate multiple pathways to learning that will involve formal and non-formal education modes. Formal classroom learning is limited to books and instruction. The new policy aims to take this learning outside of the four walls of a classroom and encourage students to imbibe it from the real world. This is where the concept of ‘learning how to learn comes in, another prominent feature of NEP. Abandoning the redundant culture of bookish learning, there will now be a move to real, holistic learning that equips individuals with 21st-century skills. From the foundational stages, young students will be exposed to multiple languages as multilingualism has great cognitive benefits and in the early years of life, children tend to pick up languages very quickly. Keeping in view the importance of rich, classical languages and literature of India, Sanskrit will be offered at all levels of school and higher education as an essential, enriching option for students. While languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia will be possibly offered as online modules for those who are interested in studying them. The policy seeks to introduce revolutionary structural reforms at the higher educational level. It promotes a flexible three or four-year degree programme structure at the undergraduate level, allowing multiple exit points for the learners. There will also be a concerted effort to promote contemporary subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Design Thinking, Data Analytics, Machine Learning, and Holistic Health which are touted as the career choices of tomorrow. The University Grants Commission is anticipated to be replaced by the Higher Education Commission of India as the regulatory body for college education. As opposed to the current teacher-centric model, in which teachers decide the subjects, curriculum, and evaluation, a student-centric model will be developed that will give students the right to decide the subjects they want to study.  To make higher education more progressive, exposure to art and design thinking is essential to improve students’ creativity in problem-solving along with science, engineering and mathematics. The new model under NEP, called STEAM, will be an upgrade over the current STEM model in higher education at a bachelor's degree level, as it is focused on experiential, application-based learning and research-based internship. As part of holistic, all-encompassing education, students will be given internship opportunities with local industry, businesses and local communities as well as research internships to improve their employability. Impediments to implementation in schools Changing the mindset The current education system is a hangover of the British and Industrial age. The change in mindset will involve two or more generations of parents, teachers, grandparents and educators. A STEM education-focused generation has to give way to the NEP. The corporate world also will need to align this and change its recruitment and grooming policies. There will be several challenges in changing this mindset. However, it can be done without la a soft power play by the government. Reimagining and adopting pedagogical changes Education must not only develop the cognitive skills in learners – both ‘foundational skills’ of literacy and numeracy and the ‘high-order’ cognitive skills like critical thinking – but also ‘social and emotional skills’ known as the soft skills like empathy, grit, perseverance, leadership and teamwork. The NEP calls for such value-based learning along with significant curriculum and pedagogical changes. These pedagogical changes are tough and need to be reimagined for successful implementation. Re-thinking assessment The boards that conduct school-leaving examinations will have to re-think their assessment parameters for students and also identify the appropriate learning content rubric. School textbooks will have to be accordingly realigned. Formative assessment is virtually absent. How do we adapt and implement it seamlessly? As the majority of K-12 learners in India are enrolled in schools with annual tuition fees below Rs 12,000; the proposed changes will have to be conveniently cascaded across different tiers of schools. Training educators Implementing such bold objectives will require training teachers, educators and official staff appropriately along with preparing a pool of excellent, motivating guides. Learning has to be an enjoyable and engaging task rather than an arduous exercise which ultimately churns out unemployable youth. The policy will have to design a learning ecosystem which takes into account the geographical and cultural diversity of our country as well as the varied learning pace of each student. Bottom-up approach As Indians, we are socially programmed to accept a top-down approach in all areas of life. This social and educational transformation is only possible with a bottom-up grass-root level intervention. In the grand scheme of things, an important action would be to repair and revamp the system through a bottom-up approach and bring a definitive change in the mindset of the stakeholders, including the office staff and parents, right at the outset. A transformation is needed from ‘what to think’ to ‘how to think’. Raising the bar for teachers We need to hire the very best and brightest to enter the teaching profession at all levels. Also, teachers need to be reinstated as the most respected and essential members of our society, as they are the ones who truly shape our next generation of citizens. Work also needs to be done in removing personal and professional barriers to working in remote, inaccessible locations which is crucial for preparing this workforce and also for making the NEP successful. Funding and scaling the new model Over 250 million students are expected to enrol in schools in India by 2030. With a teacher-student ratio of 1:35, India needs an estimated 7 million-plus teachers to address this huge student population. Those teachers need to have graduated with an esteemed B.Ed. programme for a 12th pass, graduates and post-graduates for one, two and four-year respectively. Teaching also happens to be one of the lowest-paid professions in India with an average teacher earning around Rs. 200,000 per year. Due to these constraints, conceptual and experiential teaching will be tough as compared to the prevailing printed content-oriented teaching. More fund allocation is required from the government’s end to overcome this major shortcoming. Also, the current pool of teachers has to be orientated towards the new-age teaching techniques. Impediments to implementation in higher education Learning or certificate/degree Though flexibility in the higher education model through the concept of multiple exits is an important step for reducing the number of dropouts, a question still arises on the value of such certifications and diplomas. The Indian psyche closely associates jobs with the degrees acquired. Hence, to implement the new system, we first have to dismantle the archaic thinking that only with a degree can one successfully secure a job. This is a dangerous paradigm which undermines and discourages other innate talents of an individual. Orientation towards multi-disciplinary education The existing education regime excludes formal training and orientation towards pedagogy for college and university educators. This urgently calls for an overhaul of the curriculum design to make it flexible and organic for enabling foundational and higher-order thinking and skill inculcation at different levels of education. The policy seeks to establish multi-disciplinary institutions for higher education replacing the single-disciplinary ones. The road to attaining this goal has been paved with good intentions. Funding It will be a feat to fully implement the proposals of NEP 2020 for higher education given the limited resources at hand. It requires private institutions to offer more scholarships to make admissions possible for students from low-income strata as well, but NEP fails to discuss how this can be achieved. This indicates a need for greater public funding in higher education, which in reality does not sit well within the current scenario. The increase in the education budget from 3 per cent to 6 per cent of GDP  is simply not enough to meet the implementation needs. Digital connectivity We require internet penetration in remote areas because e-learning is the way forward, as witnessed during the pandemic. Digital infrastructure for this purpose will include digital classrooms, expertise-driven online teaching models, AR/VR technologies to overcome gaps in physical teaching and lab infrastructure, uniform assessment schemes across schools, career counselling sessions and teacher training to become adept at new-age technologies. This will continue to be a major challenge in the next decade. Summing it up The drafting committee of NEP 2020 has made a comprehensive attempt to design a policy that considers diverse viewpoints, global best practices in education, field experiences and stakeholders’ feedback. The mission is aspirational but the implementation roadmap will decide if this will truly foster an all-inclusive education that makes learners industry and future-ready Education is an essential and indispensable element for the all-round development of any society and country and a comprehensive national education policy is formulated by a nation to fulfil this requirement. The New National Education Policy, 2020, approved by the Government of India, is an important initiative in this direction. The success of this new education policy will depend on how it is implemented. Therefore, it can be said that India is the country with the youngest population and India’s future will depend on providing high-quality educational opportunities to these youth. I would like to conclude by highlighting that in democratic societies, everybody should enjoy equal opportunities so that everybody can exercise the right to education and benefit from quality education, commensurate with aspirations and abilities. But quality education should also seek to be inclusive. In this respect, public authorities have to ensure quality education also for those who are unable to make use of mainstream education programmes, for different reasons, which may range from lack of proficiency in the language(s) of instruction to severe mental or physical disability. • Stay Productive 15 hours a day - Lawyers' Diary by Arunima Jha

Work can sometimes be overwhelming and exhausting. There are times when you have no motivation and you're not bothered to do very much. Through this post I would like to share, nothing hugely ground-breaking, but just the things I think we all need to be reminded of and focus on when we are going through a difficult patch. Digging into the science of things we should probably be doing more of. First and foremost fueling your body is really important but when at times when I am crazily busy I find that food very quickly slips down the list of my priorities. So I end up often feeling like oh I will just buy a quick takeaway meal or I will push lunch back and back and I will get to 5 pm when I haven't had lunch and I enter this kind of vicious cycle of unhealthy eating. The impact of going through these cycles is that you either don't eat for ages because you're super busy or you binge eat as you're absolutely starving is more than just physical. It affects your mood and mental well-being too. This can lead to a sudden spike in your energy level due to the blood glucose level and sometimes a sudden dip in your energy levels meaning you feel lethargic. So the main point here is that when you're crazily busy, don't forget to eat, and on the flip side of that second make sure that your portion sizes don't get huge. Thirdly, eat food with low glycemic index foods such as apples, oranges, or nuts. Always have a regular intake of water so that you stay hydrated. In terms of the science, being dehydrated by just 2% impairs performance in tasks that require attention, psychomotor and immediate memory skills as well as the assessment of the subjective state. Next on the list is exercise. Try to finish bits of a workout in a week and that could be just a 10-minute workout. It will help you increase your mobility. I am certainly not a morning person but I have committed myself to a small number of exercises and that has definitely helped me. It's like making an investment towards making yourself more productive. Another one is keeping your workplace as tidy and comfortable as possible. Personalize your workplace. Research has shown that having a comfortable workplace only helps you be more productive. Clutter reduces focus so the point here is that you can produce the highest quality of work when you're focused and comfortable. You can even add in a houseplant or a working plant in your workspace. It would effectively increase your well-being. P.S. Mental well-being is really important otherwise working hard for a very short period won't be sustainable. • COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE FOR CAREER PLANNING AND DECISION MAKING - Dr Pratik Mungekar

In this lecture, we will be dealing with counselling and guidance for career planning and decision making. We start with a definition and description of counselling and guidance. Then we take up career planning and within this present the interrelationship between counselling and career planning followed by presenting the interrelationship between guidance and career planning. Then we take up decision making and within this we put forward two principles viz., declaring a decision and working on a decision. Within declaring a decision we discuss the framing of the decision, the right people and the right choice to make. Following this, we take up working on a decision within which we discuss a complete set of alternatives, values against which to make trade-offs and information that describes the value of each alternative. If you prefer to watch the video, just click on this link https://youtu.be/zNpSs-BrIeY Article Courtesy: Prof.Dr.Pratik Rajan Mungekar (Scientist, Professor, Counsellor, Global Educator, Published Author & an International Speaker). ´ Counselling is a process that focuses on enhancing the psychological well being of the client, such that the client is then able to reach their full potential. This is achieved by the counsellor facilitating your personal growth, development, and self-understanding , which in turn empowers you to adopt more constructive life practices. ´ The purpose of the guidance is to provide ‘learning experiences to enable clients to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies related to making personal, educational and career decisions’ ´ Guidance includes, but is not limited to, educational guidance and counselling services staffed by trained professionals. ´ Career planning is a lifelong process, which includes choosing an occupation, getting a job, growing in our job, possibly changing careers, and eventually retiring. We will focus on career choice and the process one goes through in selecting an occupation. This may happen once in our lifetimes, but it is more likely to happen several times as we first define and then redefine ourselves and our goals. ´ Career development and the career planning process include several specific steps that help to identify personal skills and attributes. Finding out how those skills can be utilised in the job market is accomplished by researching several career fields that are of interest to you and then by gaining experience in those fields and/or speaking to people currently working in the field. ´ Career counsellors provide mainly career counselling outside the school setting. Their chief focus is helping individuals with career decisions. Vocational counsellors explore and evaluate the client’s education, training, work history, interests, skills, and personality traits. They may arrange for aptitude and achievement tests to help the client make career decisions. They also work with individuals to develop their job search skills and assist clients in locating and applying for jobs. In addition, career counsellors provide support to people experiencing job loss, job stress, or other career transition issues. ´ Career guidance refers to services and activities intended to assist individuals of any age and at any point throughout their lives, to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers. Such services may be found in schools, universities and colleges, in training institutions, in public employment services, in the workplace, in the voluntary or community sector and the private sector. The activities may take place on an individual or group basis and maybe face to face or at a distance. ´ A decision is a choice between two or more alternatives. If you only have one alternative, you do not have a decision. ´ Decision making can be regarded as the mental processes (cognitive process) resulting in the selection of a course of action among several alternative scenarios. Every decision-making process produces a final choice. The output can be an action or an opinion of choice. ´ Career guidance refers to services and activities intended to assist individuals of any age and at any point throughout their lives, to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers. Counselling ´ Counselling is a process that focuses on enhancing the psychological well-being of the client, such that the client is then able to reach their full potential. This is achieved by the counsellor facilitating your personal growth, development, and self-understanding, which in turn empowers you to adopt more constructive life practices. ´ In simple terms, counselling involves one person (the counsellor) helping another person (the client) to work through some difficult or painful emotional, behavioural or relationship problem or difficulty. That is the form of individual counselling. ´ Counselling may be helpful in several ways. It can enable you to develop a clearer understanding of your concerns and help you acquire new skills to better manage personal and educational issues. The counsellor can offer a different perspective and help you think of creative solutions to problems. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone not personally involved in your life can be most helpful. ´ The counsellor treats all the information shared by the client as confidential material. The counsellors are involved in case consultations and supervision for best practice. These meetings involve discussion of clients' concerns to formulate the best possible assessment and intervention plan. Where possible, the identifying personal information is removed from the discussion. ´ Counselling takes place in a confidential meeting, in a quiet room, and is subject to a code of ethics which specifies what the counsellor can and cannot morally do in that context. Restrictions on the Release of Information ´ Information that the client shares with the counsellor will not be released to anyone outside without their prior written permission, except under certain unusual and rare circumstances where the well being of the client matters. The client is free to discuss any concerns regarding confidentiality with the counsellor. The Counselling Process ´ The counselling process depends upon the individual counsellor, the individual client and the specific issue. However, there is a general counselling process that the counsellors will follow: ´ Background information collection ´ Identification of core issues ´ Case formulation ´ Goal setting for the therapeutic process ´ Implementation of the intervention ´ Evaluation of intervention ´ Closure ´ No further counselling is required at this time if during the initial interview you have been able to clarify your concerns and plan an appropriate course of action. ´ Further appointments are needed to continue to explore the issues before reaching a decision. A second appointment will be made with the client by the counsellor . Differing Counselling Approaches ´ Alternative services are appropriate and the counsellor will assist the client to identify specific resources to consider and pursue. ´ Counsellors work from differing theoretical approaches. Different counsellors will place varying levels of emphasis on behaviour, thinking and/or emotional aspects. All counsellors have the central goal to assist the client in increasing their sense of well-being. Length of Counseling Change does not happen quickly for most of us. The length of treatment depends on several variables. Variables include the severity of the problem, the motivation of the client, the type of problem and the age of the client. The more focused and limited the problem being addressed, the shorter treatment can be. The more the treatment addresses healing emotional injuries, the longer it is likely to take Guidance ´ The purpose of the guidance is to provide ‘learning experiences to enable clients to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies related to making personal, educational and career decisions’ ´ Guidance includes, but is not limited to, educational guidance and counselling services staffed by trained professionals. It can also include: ´ Human resource development (HRD) work ´ Assessment processes and appraisals by managers ´ Advice and guidance from managers ´ Advice and guidance from shop stewards or other trade union representatives ´ Guidance which is a part of educational or training courses, both in-service and provided externally ´ Peer guidance and counselling, carried out by fellow employees etc. ´ Mentoring by appointing a more experienced person who can listen, advise ´ and give feedback when the mentee asks for this ´ Self-assessment methods (paper or electronic) ´ Information resources such as careers libraries ´ Telephone helplines. The activities of guidance that can be carried out or organised by employers include: ´ Giving information on learning opportunities; ´ Advising on the choice of learning opportunities; ´ Assessing the educational and training needs of individual employees; ´ Counselling to examine barriers to learning and ways to overcome these; ´ Careers education in the sense of suitable courses to help employees progress within the firm; ´ Referral to other agencies, including professional guidance services; ´ Feedback to learning providers on courses needed and the suitability of those ´ already on offer; ´ Follow-up to find out what decisions were taken and what progress was made by individual employees. CAREER PLANNING ´ Career planning is a lifelong process, which includes choosing an occupation, getting a job, growing in our job, possibly changing careers, and eventually retiring. ´ The career planning process is comprised of four steps. Whether or not you choose to work with a professional, or work through the process on your own is less important than the amount of thought and energy you put into choosing a career. Career planning means knowingexploring about yourself, explore your options, make decisions and move towards your goal. Counseling and Guidance for Career Planning and Decision Making ´ Evaluate who you are as a person. This involves taking a personal inventory of which you are and identify your individual values, interests, skills, and personal qualities. What makes you tick as a person? You will look at those personal attributes under a microscope and come up with key qualities you can identify and use in your search for the perfect career. Career assessments may be required to promote a better understanding of personal attributes and skills. ´ The individual should gather information about oneself. That is self assessment in terms of their interests, values, roles, skills / aptitudes, preferred environments, developmental needs and their realities. Options ´ The individual should be able to explore the various occupations in which they are interested. The exploration should be in each and every field the individual is interested and keen. After the area of occupation is chosen, the research or a survey on industries and labor market should be done to see in which they would like to work. ´ Once the individual is clear about the specific information on the area to be chosen, he / she can go in for part time work, internships and can also go in for volunteering jobs or opportunities. Action ´ The individuals in order to reach and achieve their goal have to explore and investigate the sources for additional training and education. They would have to develop a job search strategy, write an effective resume, gather information regarding company and prepare themselves for job interviews. Match ´ After the option is clear to the individuals, they will be able to identify the possible occupations and evaluate the opportunities within that occupation. The individual can explore the alternatives available, and thus chose both a short term and long term option. Interrelation between Counseling and Career Planning ´ Career planning is a process in which an individual decides and chooses an occupation of his / her interests with the help of counselor. Counsellor helps the individual to realise, explore and analyse within themselves, their interest and their capability. ´ Career counseling is an interactive process by which counselors and clients exchange and explore information concerning clients’ backgrounds, experiences, interests, abilities, self esteem, and other personal characteristics that help or inhibit their work readiness and career planning. Career counseling is a systematic approach to providing information and advice to clients in such areas as outreach programs, training, internships, apprenticeships, and job placement. ´ Although the career counselor’s primary concern is the client’s career development, counselors also may provide screening and referral services to employers. Counselors use information gathered through assessment to understand and respond to clients’ needs and concerns. Clients use this information to understand themselves better, clarify their goals and perspectives, and make plans for the future. ´ Counselors provide individuals and groups with career and educational counseling. Counselorsuseinterviews, counselingsessions, interestandaptitude assessment tests, and other methods to evaluate and advise their clients. They also operate career information centers and career education programs. Often, counselors work with students who have academic and social development problems or other special needs. ´ Career counselors provide mainly career counseling outside the school setting. Their chief focus is helping individuals with career decisions. Vocational counselors explore and evaluate the client’s education, training, work history, interests, skills, and personality traits. They may arrange for aptitude and achievement tests to help the client make career decisions. They also work with individuals to develop their job-search skills and assist clients in locating and applying for jobs. In addition, career counselors provide support to people experiencing job loss, job stress, or other career transition issues. ´ Counselors help the individual to plan their career in a structured manner. The process begins with self assessment. Steps involved by counselor in a Career Planning Process are: ´ Step One: Self Assessment ´ The first and foremost step in career planning is to know and assess yourself. You need to collect information about yourself while deciding about a particular career option. You must analyse your interests, abilities, aptitudes, desired lifestyle, and personal traits and then study the relationship between the career opted for and self. ´ Self-assessment involves the close examination of core interests, personality traits, skills, values, and beliefs. These are all important variables in the decision-making process; they reflect your innermost needs and desires, and, most importantly, will lead you to favour some occupational fields over others. ´ Once self assessment is complete, you may begin generating and exploring a wide range of career options. By obtaining information, you will be able to sort through your initial list of occupations and reduce the options to your most favoured ones. To focus on the most appealing career option, you need to access detailed information by engaging in a more rigorous research endeavour. ´ This step involves exploring the options on your list by obtaining occupational information, such as education and training required to enter into the field, job tasks, and salary potential. It is at this point that you will be ready to decide on the most promising career option that matches your profile most closely and that affords you the greatest chances of succeeding. Keep in mind that it is also important to identify a few back up choices. ´ You will then set up an action plan that will outline the next most crucial steps for you to take in meeting your educational and / or occupational goals. ´ Finally, evaluate the outcomes of your efforts and determine whether you are indeed on the right path. If you think the educational and / or occupational path decided upon earlier is not appropriate, at this point, you may go back a step or two and decide on an alternative, and more personally satisfying, course of action. Step Two: Goal Setting ´ Set your goals according to your academic qualification, work experience, priorities and expectations in life. Once your goal is identified, then you determine the feasible ways and objectives how to realise it. Step Three: Academic/Career Options ´ Narrow your general occupational direction to a particular one by an informatory decision making process. Analyse the various career avenues by keeping in mind your present educational qualification and what more academic career courses you need to acquire for it. Step Four: Plan of Action ´ Recognise those industries and particular companies where you want to get into. Make the plan a detailed one so that you can determine for how many years you are going to work in a company in order to achieve maximum success, and then switch to another. Decide where you would like to see yourself after five years and in which position. If you are looking for career in education, then you must research about the various leading companies and industries and abroad to get into the best company. Interrelation between Guidance and Career Planning ´ Choosing the right career can be a very daunting task especially in a world which offersanarrayofpaths, allofwhichseemtobeleadingtoagoldengoal. Careers can actually make or break one’s life, so it is important to make the right choice. Career guidance can help you in pursuing the right courses, in the right colleges or institutes and can guide you in choosing a suitable career. ´ Career planning is an exercise that is well worth the time invested in it because it sets you going on the path that leads to where you would like to go. This exercise provides you with a lot of clarity regarding your career objectives as well and it best done before you embark on your job search. ´ Career guidance refers to services and activities intended to assist individuals of any age and at any point throughout their lives, to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers. Such services may be found in schools, universities and colleges, in training institutions, in public employment services, in the workplace, in the voluntary or community sector and in the private sector. The activities may take place on an individual or group basis and may be face-face or at a distance. ´ Choosing a career is a difficult matter, in the best of times. Add to this opinions of friends and parents, and the young person is caught up in a confusing situation where making a decision is almost impossible. We are providing here a model that can help young generation to choose a career, gain competencies required for it, make decisions, set goals and then take an action. This information is helpful not only for fresher but also throughout one’s life. ´ Choosing a career is a multi-step process. It involves gathering information on a number of things, the first being yourself. ´ Whichever path you choose, it is most important to know your individual strengths and weaknesses. Sit down and assess yourself honestly. Think of all your accomplishments, of all the compliments you got, of all the work that really inspired you, of the times when you worked with passion at and jot them all down. You will find that as you note down your victories, your achievements etc a pattern will emerge. You can find that you are good at organising, at making people comfortable, at leading, at solving puzzles, at physical activity, at playing music or games. Each of these represents a career option by itself or throws up some characteristic in you - qualities that could be good assets in your future career options. ´ Now list out things that motivate you, that you aspire for, your dreams – things you would want more than anything else in the world. Find your fit between the person you are and the dream you wish to achieve. As this picture gets clearer you become more aware, confident and purposeful. Attributes that serve you well along the way. You have now formed a sharp picture of yourself with specific saleable qualities. ´ Based on your aspiration level and your aptitude, you can also identify the careers that offer the kind of lifestyle or returns that you wish. If you wish to frequently travel and be in command of a dynamic business you can zero down to careers in marketing with a goal to set up your own firm or to head a large company (the same may not be possible if you inherently like to paint for long hours). It is best to be honest with yourself at this stage because most people take decisions based on glamorous misconceptions about certain careers and later change them. For example if you wish to be an airhostess, check out the sources available to the kind of work that is associated with being an airhostess. Only if you really enjoy doing that kind of work and the rewards that come with it must you opt for it. Else look further for what really fits you. Growth, rewards, recognition and most importantly job satisfaction and a good quality of life come from one thing – loving your job. ´ Having decided on a particular direction, build competencies. Specific careers need specific education and training. Whichever area you choose to be in, you will fare well if you strive to be the best in it. Leave your individual brand on it. Learn the ropes by acquiring information, by taking up courses, by taking up internships and summer jobs, by learning the economics of the job, by adding special skills that help in handling the job with greater proficiency. ´ All careers without exception would certainly require a good writing and verbal communicating ability so please work on that, a pleasing and well-mannered personality, a professional work ethic and good inter-personal skills. Work on these important soft skills along with as you plan your career. DECISION MAKING ´ A decision is a choice between two or more alternatives. If you only have one alternative, you do not have a decision. ´ Decision making can be regarded as the mental processes (cognitive process) resulting in the selection of a course of action among several alternative scenarios. Every decision making process produces a final choice. The output can be an action or an opinion of choice. ´ Problem solving and decision-making are important skills for business and life. Problem-solving often involves decision-making, and decision-making is especially important for management and leadership. There are processes and techniques to improve decision-making and the quality of decisions. ´ Decision making is more natural to certain personalities, so these people should focus more on improving the quality of their decisions. People that are less natural decision-makers are often able to make quality assessments, but then need to be more decisive in acting upon the assessments made. Problem-solving and decision-making are closely linked, and each requires creativity in identifying and developing options, for which the brainstorming technique is particularly useful. ´ A high quality decision comes with a warrant: a guarantee. Not a guarantee of a certain outcome remember this is the real world we’re talking about, and there are certain things that just aren’t knowable until after they happen—but a warranty that the process you used to arrive at a choice was a good one. ´ This level of confidence implies a process: a set of steps and rules that provide an assurance of thoroughness and rigor. This means breaking decisions down into component parts and doing one thing at a time. ´ With a process or framework, you have the mechanism you need to warrant the quality of your own decisions. Perhaps more importantly, you also have a common language and set of mental models that makes conversations about decisions more efficient and effective. This common understanding of decision processes, criteria, and roles avoids many of the common organisational decision traps, allowing people in your organisations to spend their conversational energies on creating better alternatives and validating assumptions and ultimately warranting their own decisions. The framework we use for breaking down and working decisions of virtually any size and complexity begins with two large ideas: declaring a decision and working a decision. Each of those larger elements is then broken down into three sub components, which are illustrated in the following diagram. Declare a Decision ´ 1) Frame the Problem ´ What are you deciding and why? What shouldn’t you be deciding and why? What’s not in the box is as important as what is. Without a good definition of the problem or opportunity to be worked, there is no possibility that you’ll reliably reach a high-quality decision. Frames are mental structures we create to simplify and organise our lives. They help us reduce complexity. That’s the good news and the root of another set of problems. The way people frame a problem greatly influences the solution they will ultimately choose. And the frames that people or organisations routinely use for their problems control how they will react to almost everything they encounter ´ 2) The Right People ´ If you’re a single actor, or hold all the prerogatives of a dictator, this one is easy. In other cases, you’ll want to put some thought into declaring who needs to be involved in what steps of this decision. Too few, or miss some, and you risk the problems of rework, low adoption rate and poor buy in. Too many too much inclusion and you invite the possibility of an unnecessarily painful or drawn out decision process. ´ ´ 3) The Right Process ´ It would depend on the decision situation. Making a high quality decision doesn’t have to be time consuming. In some cases, the best process might just be a coin toss or relying on some rules of thumb. In other cases, the only way to work a decision is to really work it, and that will take time. ´ This element of declaration pulls the frame and people together into a coherent whole that will govern how you will reason this decision through. Work a Decision ´ 1) A Complete Set of Alternatives ´ The more options you generate, the greater your chance of finding an excellent one. “Collectively exhaustive” means that the alternatives you’re considering fill the frame: a rational observer would conclude that you’ve thought of everything that matters. “Mutually exclusive” means that the alternatives are unique and different from each other: they’re not just restatements of the same choice. ´ 2) Values against which to make Tradeoff ´ Values define your preferences among alternatives. They are your criteria. Values can be expressed by “attributes.” Attributes are characteristics of the outcomes that we find desirable or undesirable. They typically occur over time and may have some degree of uncertainty associated with them. ´ 3) Information that describes the value of each alternative ´ Good decision making requires not only knowing the facts, but understanding the limits of your knowledge. The most valuable insights are often found in exploring uncertainties and “disconfirming” information. ´ A high quality decision process highlights the frame, potential alternatives, and key assumptions the drive value. This allows leaders to spend their time declaring the right decisions, providing a set of common criteria, and testing the key assumptions of each decision. ´ Counselling is a process that focuses on enhancing the psychological well-being of the client, such that the client is then able to reach their full potential. This is achieved by the counsellor facilitating your personal growth, development, and self-understanding, which in turn empowers you to adopt more constructive life practices. ´ The purpose of guidance is to provide ‘learning experiences to enable clients to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies related to making personal, educational and career decisions’ ´ Career development and the career planning process include a number of specific steps that help to identify personal skills and attributes. Career counselors provide mainly career counseling outside the school setting. Their chief focus is helping individuals with career decisions. In addition, career counselors provide support to people experiencing job loss, job stress, or other career transition issues. ´ Career guidance can help you in pursuing the right courses, in the right colleges or institutes and can guide you in choosing a suitable career. Career guidance refers to services and activities intended to assist individuals of any age and at any point throughout their lives, to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers. ´ A decision is a choice between two or more alternatives. If you only have one alternative, you do not have a decision. ´ Decision making can be regarded as the mental processes (cognitive process) resulting in the selection of a course of action among several alternative scenarios. Every decision making process produces a final choice. The output can be an action or an opinion of choice. ´ Problem solving and decision making are closely linked, and each requires creativity in identifying and developing options, for which the brainstorming technique is particularly useful. ´ A high quality decision comes with a warrant: a guarantee. Not a guarantee of a certain outcome remember this is the real world we are talking about, and there are certain things that just aren’t knowable until after they happen but a warranty that the process you used to arrive at a choice was a good one. ´ The framework we use for breaking down and working decisions of virtually any size and complexity begins with two large ideas: declaring a decision and working a decision.

  • Assumptions about a Lawyer's life - Breaking the Myth! -Arunima Jha

Let's talk about work-life balance. There are tons of assumptions when it comes to a lawyer's life. People usually assume that we don't have much time, we don't get to see our family or friends, and in short, we don't have a work-life balance. I am going to be blunt here and say that it isn't true at all. I have lots of family and some friends. I do get time to see them. Honestly, I do not watch much television or read tons of fiction books, which some people love doing. But I do manage to run a fashion blog on Instagram alongside my job as a corporate lawyer. Everyone makes their sacrifices and decisions and mine is to invest in my passion. Clearly, it's a personal choice to invest my time in doing stuff that I like. Another assumption about lawyers is that we are boring. People think that we are like the technological bot churning out 100 redline documents per day and that's about it. Honestly, I do not know if people joke about the law being boring or if they genuinely ask that. Well, there are some tasks that are boring in the beginning as a newbie but it does add to your fundamental development as a lawyer. I mean when I started my practice, sometimes the partner would give me a document that was all prepared and I had nothing substantial to add. If you ask me about that job, then yeah it was inherently fairly boring but this is where the new lawyers make mistakes. If you fail at a boring task, what's gonna happen is that the person delegating the task is going to think that you were incapable of doing the boring job and hence you might end up being given probably an easier but a more boring job. Here, it's relevant to understand that these boring jobs would significantly decrease with time and as you climb the ladder the work is going to get more interesting. All good lawyers are from NLUs. Well, you don't have to go to NLU to be a good lawyer. I have met some very very successful lawyers who have had the strangest paths, didn't even get the highest marks but have shown the passion and commitment to do a variety of things before entering the profession and that's what matters. Your consistency to do your job effectively every day. After all consistent people are the ones who make the difference. P.S. Having people who think differently from one another is the most productive environment to be in. Mainly, the series is of five episodes and the subject line mentioned is very deep to understand, and yet the director and writer of the series Mayuresh Joshi managed to put all the screenplay under the roof of effortless dialogues. "Sopa Nasta Kahi " is very easy to understand if we know the importance of a relationship very strongly. The series opens with Anuja (Mrunmayee Deshpande) and Sumeet (Shashank Ketkar) discussing their wedding which is scheduled to take place the next month. Then the twist takes place, Sumeet is diagnosed with Liver Failure, and the doctor suggests having an immediate liver transplant. Realizing that he doesn't have much time to live, Sumeet tells Anuja to leave him and let him die in peace. Anuja with a heavy heart leaves him and moves forward. The series shows a leap of 3 years, and Anuja is married to Sameer aka Abhijit Khandkekar, here comes the twist with arriving of Sumeet again, and the situation gets complicated. Well, thinking of screenplay, it must have been improved more, and also roles respectively for Siddharth and Sumeet too. But they have given their best to satisfy the role. The series turns up-down when Anuja aka Mrunyamee Deshpande comes to a decision to live with both of them. She calls this relationship "Polyandry" a form of Polyamory. They start living together and start adjusting between themselves. Their work-time, me-time, quality time with female partner aka Anuja. The clashes and fights build them strong as Polyandry. These are the scenes shown till 3rd episode of the series. When the parents get involved, Anuja makes a strong statement to live with both of them. Mayuresh Joshi has worked on each character, showing the pros and cons in them, and also pairing them with each scene. The uncomforted level between the three clearly shows the writer's effort to put them in the mess, and also levels to get used to the situation of what exactly has happened and solutions to solve the clutter in relationships. The last two episode makes a strong statement regarding the relationship these three are going through, while Anuja makes them happy by giving them pregnancy news. On a contrary, it gives the message that if a mother can handle three or more children she has, why cant a women live with two husbands?
