Why I Wrote "Letters to My Mother"- Vikkas Arun Pareek

An Exploration of Generational Stories

Growing up, I was captivated by TV serials like "Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka." In those days, I didn't have much say in what was on TV. Yet, in retrospect, those shows had a significant influence on me. They featured long, multi-generational narratives with a cast of characters, each living their unique stories. This exposure to complex, extended storytelling ignited a spark within me—I wanted to write a story that could span generations.

The Impact of Generations

I believe that the choices made by parents and grandparents can impact at least two to three generations, if not more, in ordinary circumstances. These decisions, whether large or small, shape the trajectories of those who follow. This belief laid the groundwork for my book, "Letters to My Mother." The story, by the time the third book is released, is designed to touch five to six generations, illustrating how the past continues to influence the present and even the future.

A Unique Storytelling Format

I could have opted for a conventional narrative structure, but I wanted to try something different. I wanted the readers to feel as if they were on a journey of discovery, unraveling the lives of the characters one letter at a time. This is how the format of "Letters to My Mother" came to be. The protagonist's exploration of her ancestry becomes a parallel journey for the reader, allowing them to uncover the layers of history and emotion that come with each generation. It's not just about reading a book; it's about piecing together a story across time.

The Invitation

"Letters to My Mother" is more than just a book; it's an invitation to explore the intricate web of familial relationships, traditions, and the unseen threads that connect us. As you read through the letters, I hope you find yourself engrossed in the lives of these characters and their enduring legacy. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on whether the story resonates with you.
