Making Waves at Ten: Pune’s Young Champion Sarmishta Rakesh Ambati Brings Home International Glory

What were you doing at the age of ten? For most children, those years are filled with schoolwork, playground games, and afternoons spent with toys. But for Sarmishta Rakesh Ambati, a determined young swimmer from Pune, the story is very different. At just ten years old, she is already making waves on the international stage—quite literally.

In a moment of immense pride for the city, Sarmishta recently represented India at the APDSF Games 2026 held in Chennai. The international event brought together more than 200 athletes from countries including Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Mongolia, creating a competitive platform that celebrated talent, perseverance, and the spirit of inclusive sports.

Sarmishta, a neurodiverse athlete, stepped onto the starting block with focus and courage. When the race began, she didn’t merely participate—she performed with remarkable determination. Her efforts resulted in an extraordinary achievement: a Silver medal in the 25-metre Backstroke and a Bronze medal in the 25-metre Freestyle. As she touched the wall at the finish line, she secured not just medals but also a moment of pride for India, with the tricolour flying high at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Her triumph at the APDSF Games quickly resonated back home in Pune, where her achievements were celebrated with great enthusiasm. In recognition of her dedication and sporting excellence, Sarmishta was honoured with the Umeed Awards 2026 in the Sports category. The awards, organized by EKRANG 2.0—an initiative of the Nanhagyan Foundation, brought together inspiring individuals and changemakers in a ceremony that highlighted stories of perseverance and possibility.

Behind every young champion is a place where dreams are trained into discipline. For Sarmishta, that place is Water World, where she spends hours refining her strokes, building stamina, and nurturing her passion for swimming. The pool has become more than a training ground—it is where confidence, resilience, and determination take shape.

Sarmishta’s journey is far more than a sporting achievement. It is a powerful reminder that talent thrives when passion meets encouragement and opportunity. As a neurodiverse athlete competing and winning on an international platform, her story carries a deeper message of inclusion, strength, and belief in limitless potential.

At just ten, Sarmishta Rakesh Ambati has already proven that age is no barrier when determination leads the way. And if her recent victories are any indication, this young swimmer from Pune is only at the beginning of a remarkable journey.

With the water as her arena and courage as her strength, many more medals—and inspiring milestones—surely lie ahead for this rising star.
