  • Grace Beyond Borders: How Small-Town India Is Redefining the Rhythm of Dance : Parag Biswas

Gone are the days, when dancers drew stares from people, male dancers were ridiculed, and  dancing was the preserve of talents residing in and around the bigger cities of India. Uday  Shankar, Birju Maharaj, Mallika Sarabhai, Rukmini Devi Arundale, Prabhu Deva, Mithun  Chakraborty, Shaimak Davar, Jaaved Jaaferi , Farah Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Hrithik Roshan and  Allu Arjun benefitted from the opportunities they got at a nascent stage by being city dwellers.  But the story now is quite different. Several youngsters from nondescript towns and villages,  including young boys, have made their mark in the wider arena of dancing and have even  entered the Guinness Book of World Records.   Take the case of Jyoti Mondal of Birpara - a tiny place in the Alipurduar subdivision of   the Alipuduar district in West Bengal , situated near the Indo-Bhutan border.   This 30-year-old dancer, who has been pursuing Kathak since childhood, has recently entered  the Guinness Book of World Records by creating a new record of the most Kathak dance spins   in 30 seconds. He has achieved an incredible 68 spins in 30 seconds, which has stunned veteran   dancers across the globe.   Jyoti , now a dance teacher himself and the owner of the Devjyoti Dance Company in Birpara,   started taking formal training in dancing from the age of 14. His first coach was Sangita Chaki   of Siliguri and he later trained under Souvik Chakraborty of Kolkata and Sanjukta Sinha of   Ahmedabad.   Mondal, who is the only child of Late Narayan Mondal, a businessman, and Bina Mondal, a   housewife, dedicated his incredible feat to his first dance teacher, Sangita Chaki. “I am   immensely indebted to Sangita Di for this world record and all my previous achievements. She   has not only trained me for free but also provided me free food and lodging during my stay at   her Collegepara residence in Siliguri for training under her,” said Jyoti with tears in his eyes.   The final year student of the post graduate department of Sociology in the Swami Vivekananda   Subharti University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh said that male dancers nowadays perhaps did not   face as much of stigma as their predecessors had to endure, but they were still the butt of   ridicule. “ Classical dance has no doubt been traditionally associated with femininity and women.   But people don’t understand that men also have the right to dance and show the world how they   too can be graceful and still be a man.   It is a pity that whenever male dancers get on stage to do their classical pieces they are   humiliated and ridiculed to no end. I had to confront a lot of ridicule and humiliation   everywhere and had it not been for the help and support of Sangita Di, I wouldn’t have been   able to pursue my dream of becoming a renowned dancer,” he said.  -2-   Another student of Sangita Chaki, Animikha De, who was selected by the Eastern Zonal   Cultural Centre (EZCC) and North Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Ministry of   Culture, Government of India to represent India as a dancer at the Bureau International des   Expositions-organized World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, attributed her success to “Sangita   Di.” “I have been training under Didi since I was three years old. She has always been very   caring and supportive.   I am also very grateful to Vidushi Madhumita Roy, under whom I am receiving advanced   training for the past five years as well as my father Biswajit De, who is an assistant engineer at   the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority and my mother Barnali De – a former TV   presenter,” she said.   The 26-year-old dancer, who has done her Masters in Dance from the Rabindra Bharati  University in Kolkata with specialization in Kathak, felt that north Bengal, especially Siliguri,   was fast becoming the Mecca of dancing in eastern India. “There was a time when Kolkata was   the cultural centre of West Bengal. But the focus has now shifted towards north Bengal due to   some incredible achievements by the dancers of our region at the national and international  levels over the past few years.   There is plenty of talent here and in many other lesser known places of our country. The need of   the hour is to groom them and support them properly,” said the Collegepara resident, who   enthralled the audiences in Osaka with her immaculate and mesmerizing performances for six   successive days, including a special performance for the Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations on   October 2, organized by the Ministry of Culture at the Festival Station Stage.   Santu Paul, the father of nine-year-old Sukriti Paul of Hyderpara in Siliguri, who was adjudged   winner in the under-14 category of the Sony TV organized dance competition, “Super Dance   Chapter 5,” for a standout collaborative performance along with Aadhyayasree Upadhyay of   Assam by judges Geeta Kapur, Shilpa Shetty and Marzi Pestonji on October 12, shared   Animikha’s sentiments. He felt that family support was crucial for success in the field of dancing   in small towns like Siliguri.   “It is a pity that many children like my daughter, who love dancing a lot, do not get the support   and encouragement necessary for achieving success in this field of art from small towns like   Siliguri. My wife, Shukla Paul, a housewife, and I spend a lot of time on training my daughter on   gymnastics every day. We ensure that she never misses any dancing class and always remains   focused on her goal,” said the 37-year-old teacher at the GSFP Primary School in the   Subhashpally area of Siliguri, who attributed Sukriti’s success also to the “able guidance” she   received from Ashik Sarkar, Kaushik Chaudhury and Aman Parwana, who trained her on   classical, breaking and hip-hop dance forms respectively.   Sangita Chaki, who mentored both Jyoti and Animikha, agreed with Paul. She appealed to the   state governments of different states in the country as well as the central government to ensure   that small town talents should also get the same facilities, opportunities and platforms that   aspiring dancers get in big cities. -3-   “There is no dearth of talent in the small and remote towns and villages of India. The aspiring   dancers there also get top class coaching from their mentors and a lot of support from their   teachers, trainers, parents and guardians. But they have to face a lot of bias and neglect, when   they go out to big cities to perform or compete in a contest before a predominantly urban crowd.   The governments in our country should come forward to remove this place-based stigma and   ensure that no talented artist or player is discriminated against only on the basis of his or her   place of birth or origin,” the ace dancer emphasized About the author : A national and international award-winning teacher, journalist, anchor, quizmaster, TV, web & Akashvani commentator and sports expert, educational trainer, motivational speaker, TV, web and film actor and filmmaker and social activist. • From classrooms to lifesavers, school Students master the Art of CPR

Lodge Keys No 297, the primary unit of Freemasons, organised an interactive Talk on CPR and a demonstration workshop for around 600 of its middle and high school students on Monday, October 13, 2025, at CAL International School at Kapra in the city. The initiative aimed to equip students with the essential life skill of performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) — an intervention that can mean the difference between life and death in emergencies.   The workshop was facilitated by Mr D. Ramachandram, Lodge Keys No. 297 member, with sessions led by Dr Srirang Abkari, Senior General Physician and a member of Freemasonry, and Mr. Chaitanya Dr Ashok Kumar and Mr Dr.Vijayananda from the International Trauma Centre, Hyderabad (ITC).   In an engaging session for classes 7 and 8, Dr Srirang Abkari explained the fundamental steps and mechanisms of CPR. He guided students through the correct hand placement, the ideal rate of compressions (100–120 per minute), and the standard compression-to-breath ratio (30:2). He also highlighted crucial safety considerations to keep in mind before performing CPR. The initiative aimed to equip students with the essential life skill of performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)   “If a hundred people are in danger, CPR may not save every life, but it can save at least one — which is why it’s such an important life skill,” said Dr Srirang, emphasising the importance of timely intervention.   Dr Srirang further educated students on emergency response measures such as dialling 108 for an ambulance, locating nearby AED machines, and adjusting CPR techniques for pregnant women and infants. He also demonstrated methods for helping choking victims safely, without causing additional harm.   The session for classes 9 and 10, led by Mr Chaitanya, Dr Vijay and Dr Ashok Kumar, took a hands-on approach. Each group of students received a CPR mannequin, allowing them to practice and refine their technique under expert supervision. The interactive format allowed students to assess and correct their posture, compression rhythm, and breathing coordination.   Some of the age-appropriate, intelligent, and thought-provoking questions that Class 7, 8 and 9th-grade students  asked during a CPR or heart-health awareness talk include Why do older people get heart attacks more often than younger people? Can children also get a heart attack, or is it only for adults? What should I do to protect my papa from a heart attack? If I see my grandfather suddenly fall, how quickly should I start CPR? Can we do CPR even if we are not doctors? What if I press too hard and break someone’s ribs — will that hurt them more? If the patient dies even after I try my best with CPR, will I be held responsible or be called a murderer? What if people around me stop me from helping because they think I’m too young? Can I do CPR on a woman or an elderly person without getting misunderstood? Why don’t we see more people in India doing CPR in real life — is it fear or lack of knowledge? How can we train our parents, neighbours, and relatives to learn CPR too? Students of Classes 7, 8, 9 and 10 surprised everyone with their awareness and social sensitivity. These innocent yet deeply intriguing questions reflect the curiosity, compassion, and imagination of young students.   The students of classes 7 to 10 surprised everyone with their intelligent, sensitive, and thought-provoking questions during the CPR Awareness Sessions. Their curiosity went beyond the technical aspects — touching the very essence of empathy and responsibility. Questions like “What if I break ribs while doing CPR — will I be doing more harm than good?” and “If I fail to save a life, will I be called a killer?” reflected not only awareness but also a deep moral understanding. The Doctors who are specialists in emergency medicine and resuscitation were moved by the compassion and maturity these young minds displayed — proving that true life skills education begins with awareness, empathy, and the courage to ask the right questions.   “India is a country of 1.4 billion people, but only about 2% know how to perform CPR,” said D. Ramchandram, the project lead of the "CPR Ambassador' initiative of Lodge Keys No. 297.  Lodge Keys has embarked on training 1000 common citizens and making CPR Ambassadors.  over 600 students had completed CPR training — each one walking out with the confidence and knowledge to potentially save a life.   By the end of the day, over 600 students had completed CPR training — each one walking out with the confidence and knowledge to potentially save a life. With this initiative, Cal Public School and its partners have added 600 trained bystanders to Hyderabad’s growing network of first responders.   Driven by the mission of building a safer community, Mr D. Ramachandram and the Freemasons Society have set an ambitious goal: to train at least 1,000 citizens in CPR. The team will return to Cal Public School to further train an additional 340 students, continuing their impactful effort to make lifesaving knowledge accessible to all.   With this, Cal Public School becomes one of the few schools in the city that trains 900 students, probably the largest in the city

This statement reflects her belief in collective guardianship and responsibility for women across India, emphasizing the need to nurture and protect young women from discrimination, violence, and socio-economic barriers. Her advocacy aligns with broader societal values recognizing the significance of gender equality and women's empowerment for sustainable development and peace. Mayaa SH has won several awards at the International, National and State Level. As she bags yet another feather to her vast array of accomplishments for Certificate Of Appreciation For Outstanding Contribution In Fields Of Beti Bachao Beti Padao, Girl's Education, Women Empowerment and Mission Shakti: International Day Of Girl Child, International Day of the Girl 2025 is "The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis". Observed annually on 11 October, International Day of the Girl is a key global moment on which to celebrate girls everywhere, amplifying their voices, actions and leadership. It is a day that belongs to everyone who cares about girls and their rights. On this day, we come together to recognize and advocate for the full spectrum of girls’ rights. This year’s theme, as shaped by girl-led organizations and networks, is "The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis." Why girls’ rights matter now more than ever? Being a girl shouldn’t determine what you can do, where you can go or who you can become. But right now, that's the reality for millions of girls across the world. Too many are being left behind – confronted by extreme challenges that deny girls their rights, restrict their choices and limit their futures. Despite the progress made in adolescent girls’ lives over the past thirty years, their rights are still being violated in places all over the world. Crisis, conflict and displacement all increase the risk of child marriage, sexual violence and maternal mortality for girls. In the last 20 years, self-harm has been a leading cause of death among adolescent girls. Yet change is within reach. There are proven solutions for accelerating progress towards a future in which every girl has the healthcare, education, skills, safety and opportunities she needs to succeed. Investing in girls is one of the smartest actions we can take, with high returns for girls, their communities and entire economies. The girl I am, the change I lead. This year’s theme calls for recognition of girls’ leadership in the face of multiple crises. All over the world, girls are stepping up to meet today’s biggest challenges. They're organizing in their communities, fighting for climate justice and demanding an end to violence. Girls are asking to be seen not only for the challenges they face, but for who they are and the solutions they bring. Yet, too often their voices go unheard, their actions ignored, their needs and rights pushed aside. As we mark thirty years since the Beijing Declaration – the world’s blueprint for gender equality – International Day of the Girl is a rallying cry to see girls for their limitless potential. The theme for the 2025 International Day of the Girl is "The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis." This theme, developed through consultations with girls' organizations, UN partners, and girls themselves, emphasizes the crucial role girls play in addressing global challenges and highlights their leadership in times of crisis. The day, observed annually on October 11th, celebrates girls' achievements, recognizes the unique challenges they face, and advocates for their rights and empowerment. She stresses the importance of recognizing and nurturing the potential of daughters as vital contributors to society. She believes that empowering daughters through education is crucial for their development and societal contribution, aligning with global movements advocating for girls' education as a fundamental right. Educated women, in her view, can drive economic growth, improve health outcomes, and foster more equitable societies. Mayaa SH challenges traditional gender roles that often limit girls' aspirations, advocating for a shift in societal attitudes that view daughters as individuals with their own dreams and ambitions, not merely as future wives or caretakers. This resonates with contemporary discussions about dismantling patriarchal norms and valuing women's contributions beyond domestic spheres. She encourages daughters to challenge stereotypes, promoting personal fulfillment and resilience against challenges like gender-based violence and economic dependence. Her advocacy extends to mental health awareness, recognizing that societal pressures can significantly affect young women's self-esteem and identity formation. This focus reflects a broader societal acknowledgment of the need to support mental health initiatives, particularly among young women. Mayaa SH also calls for systemic change to ensure gender equality at all levels of society, aligning with international frameworks like the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which underscores gender equality as essential for sustainable development. She believes true empowerment enables girls to perceive themselves as powerful individuals capable of achieving their goals, challenging traditional gender roles, and making their own life decisions irrespective of societal definitions. She also advocates for increased representation of women in political spheres, believing their voices are crucial in decision-making processes. Addressing violence against women is another significant aspect of her work, as she highlights how it restricts women's ability to participate fully in society. Her comprehensive approach to women's empowerment addresses various sectors such as healthcare, education, and economic stability, aiming for stronger families and communities. The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, was established by the United Nations to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges they face globally. The day aims to promote girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights, focusing on areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence, and forced child marriage. The theme for 2025 is "The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis," highlighting girls' roles as leaders and change-makers in addressing global challenges. • From Page to Stage: Journalist-turned-poet Garima Mishra’s initiative, KavitaKAFE, is turning Pune into a hub of lyrical expression and community healing

Garima Mishra’s bond with the Hindi language traces back to her childhood—long before she picked up a journalist’s pen. Growing up in a North Indian home where Hindi flowed like an everyday melody, she imbibed its rhythm and soul early on. In school, she was admired by her Hindi teachers not only for her marks but for her sensitivity to words. While others saw essays as assignments, Garima found beauty in language that carried emotional truth. She loved bhajans and songs whose lyrics linger long after the tune fades. On stage, she thrived—performing in Hindi plays, reciting poems, and winning debates that celebrated expression. Yet professional life led her into English journalism. For nearly two decades as a senior journalist with The Indian Express , Garima reported on ground realities, culture, and social change with integrity. Her empathetic storytelling earned her the Express Excellence Award in 2015. Still, her first love—Hindi—remained quietly alive. That moment came in October 2024 when she founded कविताKAFE (KavitaKAFE) in Pune. What began as a heartfelt initiative soon grew into a vibrant cultural movement. Garima envisioned it as a space where Hindi poetry would breathe, dance, and connect through people—no longer confined to classrooms or anthologies. Her aim was simple yet profound: to bring poetry back into everyday life as conversation, therapy, and shared emotion. Journalist-turned-poet Garima Mishra’s initiative, KavitaKAFE, is turning Pune into a hub of lyrical expression and community healing   Founding Vision and Community Space From the very inception of KavitaKAFE, Monalisa Kalagram has stood by its founding vision—to make Hindi poetry an expressive, living art form and a medium for emotional, social, and cultural connection. Under Garima’s leadership, the platform has reimagined how poetry can bring people together, extending its reach from mainstream venues to underserved communities. Monalisa Kalagram, Pune’s vibrant community arts space, has been an integral part of this journey, offering not just a venue but a shared belief in creating spaces for authentic creative expression. Its founder, Lisa Pingale, shares, “KavitaKAFE’s poetry gatherings add a quiet charm and depth to the space, creating a platform for expression, connection, and creativity.” Over the past year, KavitaKAFE’s sessions at Monalisa Kalagram have explored many shades of human experience—Aarambh marked a poetic revival, Baatcheet celebrated human connection, Kavya-Katha blended poetry with storytelling, and Suno-Sunao opened the mic to new voices. The gatherings bring together engineers, IT professionals, doctors, theatre artists, and writers across generations. Looking ahead, the platform envisions merging poetry with dance, music, books, and visual art to create immersive community experiences. On November 2, KavitaKAFE returns to Monalisa Kalagram with Udaan (उड़ान)—an open mic that continues their shared mission of keeping Hindi poetry expressive and alive. Garima acknowledges her core team: her husband Rakesh and daughter Rashi, along with Fahim Mulla (photography/videography) and Anupam Banerjee (sound), calling them “the quiet anchors behind this growing movement.” Healing Verses: Poetry as Therapy In March 2025, Garima expanded KavitaKAFE’s purpose through Healing Verses , an outreach program using poetry and music as therapy. It reaches the elderly at Vrindavan Old-Age Home, cancer patients at Cipla Palliative Care, visually impaired students at Poona Blind School, geriatric patients at Aaji Care, and disabled soldiers at QMTI. Sessions begin softly—with words, music, and silence—and end in shared catharsis. Participants describe feeling heard, comforted, and renewed. For Garima, “poetry isn’t just art; it’s empathy articulated.”   A Poet at Heart Garima’s poems have been aired on Canadian radio CIUT.FM and published by Norway-based bilingual online magazine Ghudsavar , reflecting her international reach. She recently judged a poetry competition organised by All India Radio’s Akashvani as part of Hindi Diwas Pakhwada Samaroh. She has also performed her poetry at several open mics in Pune. She has opened the shows of Sufi and Qawwali singer Aanchal Shrivastava twice and presented devotional poems during Navratri at Anandmayee Ashram. Her writing moves between the intimate and universal—self-reflection, rural life, nature, longing, womanhood, relationships, faith, and time—delivered with tender yet powerful insight. She is currently working on her debut Hindi poetry book. Garima Mishra’s bond with the Hindi language traces back to her childhood—long before she picked up a journalist’s pen.   Recognition and Legacy In March 2025, she was honoured with the Pride of Maharashtra Award for her contributions to arts and society, recognising not just her journalistic legacy but her cultural leadership. While deeply committed to Hindi, Garima maintains a strong connection with English. Alongside KavitaKAFE, she works as a consulting writer-editor for the NGO Mann Deshi Foundation and occasionally writes blogs on varied topics and poetry in English on Medium. Remarkably, a short story by Garima was published by the US-based magazine Down in the Dirt , from Scars Publications , demonstrating her ability to engage readers in both languages. Today, Garima Mishra stands at an inspiring crossroads where journalism meets art, and language meets emotion. Through KavitaKAFE , she is proving that Hindi, with its warmth and lyrical power, is not a relic of the past but the heartbeat of contemporary expression. One verse at a time, she brings people closer—to poetry, to each other, and to themselves.

  • Mayaa SH Attends World Federation For Mental Health Forum and Promoting and Supporting Mental Health Ahead Of World Mental Health Day

Mayaa SH, a prominent figure in contemporary literature and a staunch advocate for women's rights, emphasizes the transformative power of self-belief. Her writings and activism consistently highlight the importance of inner strength and conviction for personal growth and societal change. Mayaa SH's insights on cultural wisdom and connected care in mental health care gained prominence ahead of World Mental Health Day 2025. The HSE Mental Health Programme and HSE National Mental Health hosted a joint webinar on Tuesday, 7 October. The event showcased a number of evidence-based initiatives and highlighted the ongoing implementation of international mental health policy, Sharing the Vision. Guest speakers included Dr Greg Martin, Consultant in Public Health Medicine; Derek Chambers, Policy Implementation Lead, HSE National Mental Health; Dr Niamh Clarke, HSE Principal Psychologist; and Dr Aisling Sheehan, National HSE Lead for Alcohol and Mental Health and Wellbeing programmes. This aligns with the broader themes of World Mental Health Day 2025, which emphasize the importance of mental health in humanitarian emergencies and the need for accessible services, especially during times of global instability. The WHO also stresses that mental health is integral to overall well-being and that nearly everyone experiences distress and social disruption during crises, making continuous care a priority. The event's focus on policy implementation and evidence-based initiatives reflected a commitment to strengthening mental health support systems, a critical aspect given that millions worldwide, including a significant portion of the global population, face barriers to mental health care. Mayaa SH’s attendance at "Cultural Wisdom, Connected Care: Negotiating Crises and Challenges in the Pacific Region" at WFMH explored the critical role of indigenous knowledge systems and community-based approaches in addressing mental health challenges within the Pacific Islands. Given the region's unique vulnerabilities to climate change, natural disasters, and socio-economic disparities, the presentation emphasized how culturally sensitive interventions and strong social networks are paramount for fostering resilience and well-being. It highlighted the importance of integrating traditional healing practices with contemporary mental health services to create a holistic and effective care model that respects local customs and values while addressing the specific needs of diverse communities across the Pacific. The discussion also touched upon challenges such as limited resources, geographical isolation, and the ongoing impact of historical injustices on mental health outcomes in the region, advocating for collaborative efforts and policy changes to strengthen mental health infrastructure and support. The initiative was supported by the Oceania Mental Health Advisory Committee in partnership with WFMH, SPCNMOA, UTS, and Fiji National University. Speakers from Fiji, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Kiribati, and Tonga discussed how cultural wisdom can be leveraged to address crises and challenges, thereby strengthening mental health and community well-being in the Pacific region. The focus was on exploring innovative, culturally grounded approaches to care. The discussion emphasized how traditional practices and social bonds, which are integral to Pacific Island communities, contribute to their resilience in the face of adversities. This event was part of a broader series of webinars and initiatives by WFMH aimed at promoting mental health awareness and support globally, including specific attention to regional challenges and vulnerable populations. The themes and content were based on the WFMH’s established focus and ongoing mental health discourse in the Pacific region. The WFMH consistently advocates for culturally appropriate mental health care and recognizes the significance of traditional wisdom in promoting well-being, especially in vulnerable populations. The Pacific region faces a confluence of challenges, including the disproportionate impact of climate change, which exacerbates existing mental health vulnerabilities. Mayaa SH emphasized the importance of integrating traditional healing practices with modern mental health interventions, highlighting the role of family and community networks and advocating for policies that prioritize culturally informed mental health strategies. The presentations drew upon case studies and examples from various Pacific Island nations, illustrating successful models of care that leverage local strengths and address unique cultural contexts. Mental health and social sustainability in a community-centered approach is essential in today’s era, covering various thematic axes relevant to mental health, such as culture and mental health, trauma, emergencies, disasters, and women’s mental health. The importance of cultural context in mental health interventions is increasingly recognized, especially in regions like the Pacific, where traditional wisdom and community-based approaches play a crucial role in fostering well-being and resilience. The discussion also highlighted the need for increased investment in mental health infrastructure, training for local mental health professionals, and the development of culturally relevant assessment tools and therapeutic approaches. Mayaa SH, a prominent Indian authoress, activist, and social scientist, offers significant insights into the role of cultural wisdom in mental health care, particularly through her advocacy for women’s empowerment, her emphasis on self-belief, and her integration of philosophical texts like the Bhagavad Gita. Her approach underscores a holistic view of mental well-being that extends beyond clinical interventions to encompass societal, cultural, and individual factors. Mayaa SH’s approach to mental health emphasizes the transformative power of dreams, empowerment, and self-belief, particularly for women, and utilizes conversational engagement as a primary tool for navigating stress and anxiety. This contrasts with traditional mental healthcare, which often focuses on clinical diagnoses, one-on-one sessions with mental health professionals, and established therapeutic modalities. She views dreams not merely as aspirations but as fundamental tools for women’s empowerment and self-belief. By envisioning a future beyond societal limitations, women are motivated to break free from traditional roles and pursue their passions, leading to personal fulfillment and societal progress. This focus on internal motivation and aspiration as a therapeutic force is less common in traditional clinical settings. Mayaa SH integrates cultural wisdom into mental health care through several key avenues: 1. The Bhagavad Gita and Resilience Mayaa SH draws upon the philosophical and spiritual significance of the Bhagavad Gita to promote principles of detachment, resilience, and self-improvement. She emphasizes that its timeless teachings are applicable to various life situations, including dealing with rejection and adversity. By writing on the essence of the Gita, even in regional languages, she makes profound wisdom accessible to a wider audience, enriching their literary and philosophical understanding within their cultural frameworks. 2. Feminine Sensibilities and Societal Norms Her work as a developmental feminist and women empowerment culturist addresses the impact of societal norms on women’s mental health. She argues that gender inequality and the objectification of women contribute to psychological distress. By advocating for gender equality, respect, and understanding, she aims to create a compassionate and equitable society that inherently supports mental well-being. 3. The Power of Self-Belief and Dignity A core aspect of her philosophy is instilling self-belief and dignity, particularly in women and marginalized communities. She believes true empowerment comes from within and that individuals must take ownership of their journey toward self-improvement. Her unique approach of charging a nominal fee (one rupee) for some services is to foster dignity and value in the assistance received. 4. Talking as a Therapeutic Medium Mayaa SH champions conversation as a powerful tool to combat stress and fear. Talking helps individuals identify and change troubling perspectives, thoughts, and behaviors, reducing mental burdens. This aligns with traditional cultural practices of communal sharing and seeking wisdom from elders or trusted figures. 5. Challenging Stigma and Promoting Inclusivity She actively works to destigmatize mental health challenges, particularly among women and marginalized communities. Her advocacy aims to create a more inclusive society where mental health is openly discussed and supported. 6. Holistic Approach to Well-being Her work integrates mental health awareness with broader social justice issues, recognizing that mental well-being is intrinsically linked to societal conditions. Advocacy for women’s rights, economic independence, and challenging patriarchal structures are seen as crucial for fostering a mentally healthy society. In essence, Mayaa SH’s insights emphasize leveraging traditional philosophical teachings, fostering self-belief and dignity, promoting dialogue, challenging societal stigmas, and advocating for social justice as integral components of mental well-being. In her own words: “Women’s mental health is important because it is intricately linked to their physical health, overall quality of life, and their ability to contribute to society. Women are disproportionately affected by certain mental health conditions due to biological factors, such as hormonal fluctuations, and societal pressures, including caregiving responsibilities, gender-based violence, and socioeconomic disparities. Addressing these unique challenges through tailored support and early intervention is essential for individual well-being and broader societal health.” About the Author Mayaa SH is renowned for her extensive contributions to suicide prevention and mental health awareness, particularly through her advocacy for women’s empowerment and her multifaceted approach to addressing the root causes of mental distress. She integrates literary contributions, public speaking, and social activism to challenge societal norms, reduce stigma, and promote access to mental health interventions. She consistently highlights how societal norms and gender inequality contribute to mental health challenges in women, including frustration, depression, and agony. She advocates for women to be heard and treated with respect, challenging objectification and male domination. Her belief is that empowering women is essential for achieving social justice and improving overall health and social development within families, communities, and countries. Her advocacy confronts societal stigma surrounding mental health. Through her podcast series, "Purpose With A Light," she addresses depression and suicide prevention, fostering supportive communities that encourage individuals to embrace their unique qualities and strengths. Mayaa SH employs talking as a medium to help women navigate stress and anxiety. This approach fosters a supportive environment where individuals can express feelings without judgment, aligning with peer support models. She links mental well-being to gender equality and social change, providing a proactive, strengths-based perspective. Her philosophy consistently champions self-belief as a powerful force enabling women to overcome societal barriers, achieve personal growth, and contribute meaningfully to society. Her literary works, including "Satya: Ek Soch" and "Swayam," serve as guides for cultivating inner strength. Mayaa SH’s work in mental health and suicide prevention encompasses literary works, advocacy, and public speaking. She identifies factors impacting stress, such as childhood adversities, life events, and terminal diagnoses. She highlights the crucial role of mental health care access, linking greater availability to reduced suicide rates. As an internationally acclaimed authoress, Mayaa SH uses her writings to advocate for women’s voices and experiences. Her self-help books instill hope and self-confidence in survivors of trauma, exploitation, and abuse. Her impact is reflected in public monikers such as Mayaa Devi, Padma of the East, Lady Gandhi, and Lady with Nerves of Steel, reflecting admiration for her work. Her supporters emphasize her ability to connect people, foster love and friendship, champion social justice, and combine intellectual knowledge with practical solutions. Mayaa SH’s comprehensive and empathetic approach combines advocacy for women’s empowerment, destigmatization of mental health issues, diverse intervention strategies, and literary contributions, all underpinned by her personal resilience and commitment to social justice.

  • August Moon Paints 50+ National Awards For Mayaa SH

Mayaa SH, an acclaimed Indian author, poet, and activist, encourages all individuals to pursue personal and societal transformation. Her philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that every individual deserves dignity and has the inherent capacity to "Rise and Shine Like A Star Again." Mayaa SH is a fervent women's rights activist, a "Women Empowerment Culturist," and a "Gender Equality Exponent." Her work consistently addresses the double exploitation of women in Indian society, advocating for their intellectual power and challenging patriarchal norms. She emphasises the importance of women's liberation and their right to make their own life decisions, free from societal judgments. Mayaa SH's ideology promotes a positive view of feminism, linking it deeply to human rights and striving to dismantle the structural rigidities of patriarchy. She has gained recognition in a diverse array of fields, primarily centred around literature, women's empowerment, social activism, and mental health advocacy. Her multifaceted career reflects a strong commitment to social change and the upliftment of marginalised communities, particularly women. In a candid conversation, the Firebrand Feminist Mayaa SH speaks on self-help books, growth mindset, reforms in matrimonial law, and more. What is your main idea of authoring self-help books? My main idea behind authoring self-help books is to empower individuals, particularly women, by fostering self-belief, resilience, and personal growth, enabling them to overcome societal limitations and achieve their full potential. I aim to provide practical guidance and inspiration to navigate life's challenges, address mental health issues, and break free from cycles of abuse and disempowerment. My commitment to exploring themes of self-belief, motivation, and the empowerment of women has always been pivotal in curating any literary piece. A central theme for me is the cultivation of self-belief and self-confidence. I do assert and continue to emphasise that these internal strengths are vital for women to retain their identity, assert themselves in society, and overcome obstacles. The focus of my books is designed to rekindle hope and self-belief in those who have lost it, asserting that the spark of self-confidence never truly extinguishes. This focus on inner strength is particularly relevant for survivors of domestic violence, who often experience a significant loss of self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. The books are designed as a self-help guide, offering insights and inspiration for personal growth and resilience, particularly for women seeking to rediscover themselves and channel their inner strengths. I do champion the idea that women are not passive entities but active agents of change, capable of intellectual prowess and leadership. What, according to you, is a growth mindset and how can women be empowered? Cultivating a growth mindset, particularly for women, involves a fundamental shift in perspective from viewing abilities as fixed to seeing them as malleable and capable of development through effort and dedication. This mindset is crucial for overcoming challenges, fostering resilience, and achieving personal and professional success. Many women are conditioned to believe they need to "Be More, Do More, and Give More," often viewing personal growth as an additive process to prove their worth. However, a growth mindset encourages redefining personal growth as a removal process, letting go of beliefs, behaviours, and obligations that no longer serve them. This involves acknowledging that one is already enough and worthy, rather than striving for external validation or an "improved" version of themselves. Instead of viewing failures, mistakes, and disappointments as crippling setbacks, a growth mindset encourages seeing them as opportunities for growth and improvement. This means being open to exciting challenges, seeking feedback for improvement, and understanding that mistakes are not detrimental unless one fails to learn from them. For women, this can be particularly empowering in fields like STEM, where stereotypes might otherwise lead to a fixed mindset about their abilities. By reframing struggles and setbacks, women can build resilience and a stronger belief in their capacity to learn and adapt. How do you view your many wins at the national level with National Awards? I view my many wins not merely as personal accolades but as powerful platforms to amplify the voices of marginalised communities and inspire social change. To me, these are a testament to my unwavering commitment to social justice and a call to action for others to participate in creating a more equitable society. My ideology regarding the same is multifaceted, reflecting my dedication to women's rights, social justice, and the empowerment of individuals. I do tend to assert consistently that these recognitions serve a greater purpose beyond personal achievement. I believe that this provides a platform to amplify the voices of marginalised communities. The recognition is to draw attention to critical social issues, particularly those affecting women in Indian society, such as double exploitation based on race and gender. By highlighting these issues, one can aim to inspire others to engage in social reform and contribute to building a more equitable society. A core tenet of my philosophy is instilling the power of self-belief in individuals, especially women. I endeavour via self-help books to promote an exponential growth mindset. This serves as validation of one's efforts to empower women to stand for their convictions and achieve their aspirations, regardless of societal odds. The upliftment of weaker sections of society through education and empowerment, aligning my work with the vision of a classless society free from oppression, is pivotal. This is a mandate for "Call to Action for Collective Responsibility." Rather than viewing awards as an endpoint, I consider them a call to action for everyone to participate in creating positive change within their communities. This stresses the importance of collective responsibility in addressing societal challenges and believes that recognition can motivate young activists and leaders to persevere in their commitment to social justice. My work, including writings and podcasts, consistently aims to raise awareness about important social, political, and cultural issues, providing a platform for marginalised voices and challenging societal norms. In your viewpoint, what is the biggest reform required in matrimonial law in India? The current legal landscape in India is characterised by diverse personal laws governing marriage, divorce, adoption, and inheritance for different religious communities, such as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Parsis. While significant reforms have been made within these individual personal laws, particularly the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, the existence of separate codes creates inconsistencies and often leads to discriminatory practices, especially against women. In my view, the biggest reform required in matrimonial law in India is the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that harmonises personal laws across all religions, ensuring gender justice, equality, and efficiency in matrimonial disputes. This would address the current disparities and complexities arising from religion-specific civil codes and move towards a more equitable legal framework for all citizens. A UCC would ensure that all individuals, regardless of their religious affiliation, are subject to the same laws concerning marriage, divorce, alimony, child custody, and property division, thereby promoting true gender equality. The 2023 amendments to divorce laws in India aimed to address gender bias, promoting equitable treatment in alimony, child custody, and property division, but these changes are primarily within Hindu law. A UCC would extend these principles universally. A UCC would simplify the legal framework, making the process of divorce, maintenance claims, and property distribution more straightforward and efficient for all citizens. The emphasis on speedier divorce proceedings and the waiver of cooling-off periods, as seen in recent Supreme Court rulings, highlight the judiciary's intent to expedite matrimonial cases. A UCC would further enhance this efficiency by providing a unified set of rules. Article 44 of the Indian Constitution advocates for a Uniform Civil Code, aiming to secure justice and equality for all citizens. The Supreme Court has, on several occasions, highlighted the need for a UCC to uphold the secular fabric of the nation and ensure that fundamental rights are equally applicable to everyone. The evolution of society, including urbanisation, migration, and the advent of technology and social media, has introduced new dimensions to matrimonial disputes, such as digital evidence and online harassment. While the Law Commission of India has acknowledged the need for legal reforms to address these new challenges, a fragmented legal system makes it difficult to implement comprehensive solutions. A UCC would provide a cohesive framework to tackle these contemporary issues effectively. In conclusion, while reforms within existing personal laws are valuable, the overarching need is for a Uniform Civil Code to create a truly equitable, efficient, and constitutionally compliant matrimonial legal system in India. Lordess Durga is the epitome of multiple forms. How do you balance your diverse roles in life – personal, professional, and social? Many women identify with Lordess Durga as a belief in gender equality and an awareness of contemporary gender discrimination at both interpersonal and societal levels. Lordess Durga is symbolic of balance and immense power. This advocates for women’s rights and aims to address issues such as sexism, discrimination, and social injustice. This belief system empowers all women, including me, to recognise their value, assert their identity, and engage in collective action against oppressive structures. Lordess Durga plays a crucial role in shaping women's identity by providing the tools for self-awareness, empowerment, and collective action against discrimination. The interplay between individual experiences, cognitive appraisals, social identity dynamics, and sociocultural factors creates a complex landscape where women’s identities are formed and expressed through the lens of feminism. This is fundamentally intertwined with women's identity as it provides a framework through which women can understand their experiences, assert their rights, and challenge societal norms that perpetuate gender inequality. This continues to give us the zeal to continue our journey. At an individual level, I encourage women to find inner strength, make independent decisions, and overcome emotional dependency. This aligns with the narrative of Lordess Durga, who, in the Devi Mahatmya, emerges as a collective force of divine energy from the angered gods to defeat the seemingly invincible demon Mahishasura. Lordess Durga's victory symbolises the triumph of inner strength and righteous power over adversity. I emphasise the importance of women recognising their own worth and potential, encouraging them to make their own choices and effect social change, much like Lordess Durga has inspired strength and self-reliance in all of us. My birth name is Shivani, a name for Goddess Parvati, who is an incarnation of Goddess Durga and the consort of Lord Shiva. This has perhaps led me to always overcome formidable demons and challenges in life with unwavering resolve. Lordess Durga recognises the power of women’s voices in shaping narratives and driving change in contemporary society. What, according to you, is the advice to aspiring writers who look up to your journey, and how do you envision your legacy as a writer and cultural voice? My recommendation to aspiring writers would likely be centred on the importance of finding and amplifying one's unique voice, particularly in advocating for social change and challenging established norms. I would like to stress the need for writers to be deeply connected to their subject matter, combining intellectual understanding with emotional conviction. The significance of perseverance, continuous self-improvement, and the courage to address sensitive topics with precision and empathy is a must. Always delve into your own unique experiences and perspectives, as this is where true originality and impact lie. My vision is deeply rooted in the belief that literature is a powerful tool for social reflection and transformation. Any work is not merely about highlighting issues but about inspiring change and advocating for a more equitable society. All one can aim is to leave an anecdote to further empower women to recognise their self-worth, make their own choices, and effect social change. This includes promoting economic and social freedom, challenging patriarchal norms, and addressing critical issues like gender bias, the gender pay gap, and gender-based violence. Creating a psychological and spiritual environment where men and women can interact on equal footing, fostering a society where all legal, social, and economic barriers to women's empowerment are removed, is something that qualifies for a stress-free, violence-free society. In the words of Mayaa SH, "The pursuit of perfection, often driven by ego, can be a significant barrier to a growth mindset. Instead, women should choose progress and growth over perfection. This involves celebrating small victories, focusing on consistent effort, and recognising that the journey itself holds valuable lessons. This approach helps to avoid burnout and allows for a more mindful and enjoyable experience of personal development. Feminism is not a war between men and women, but rather a fight against the ideology of patriarchal structures. Feminism seeks equality for all genders, religions, classes, and castes, and aims to ensure every individual lives with liberty, equality, and dignity." About The Author Mayaa SH is a multi-award-winning Indian author, poet, podcaster, artist, and social activist, renowned for her significant contributions to contemporary literature and her unwavering advocacy for women's rights and gender equality. Her awards and writings underscore her dedication to promoting gender inclusivity and equality. Her self-help literature directly addresses the challenges women face, including gender-based violence, economic dependence, and limited access to education. For instance, "Stamped: For Domestic Violence Survivors" aims to provide hope and guidance for individuals trapped in cycles of trauma, exploitation, and abuse, especially those lacking economic independence or social acceptance to break free. Her work encourages women to develop resilience against adversities, transforming obstacles into stepping stones towards achieving their goals. She believes that by nurturing their dreams and fostering self-belief, women can confront and overcome societal barriers. Recognising the profound psychological effects of abuse and societal pressures, Mayaa SH's self-help books also focus on mental health awareness and suicide prevention. She uses conversation as a tool to help women manage stress and fear, offering support and guidance, and actively works to destigmatise mental health challenges. Her books provide strategies for managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADHD, or PTSD, helping individuals feel more in control of their lives. Beyond individual empowerment, her self-help books implicitly and explicitly advocate for broader societal change. Her work highlights the importance of education, legal reforms, and creating supportive communities to foster an environment where women can thrive as equals. Her books provide practical guidance, insights, and inspiration for personal growth. She provides actionable quotes and anecdotes to help readers improve their health, productivity, and relationships. Her writing is described as a self-guiding light for numerous souls, with short snippets that allow readers to relate to contemporary concepts, aiming to motivate individuals by reinforcing the belief that they can achieve anything if they believe in themselves. At an individual level, her approach to navigating patriarchal challenges is deeply rooted in the understanding of feminism as a movement for "Equality, Not Superiority." Mayaa has constantly affirmed that "Feminism is not a war between men and women, but rather a fight against the ideology of patriarchal structures. Feminism seeks equality for all genders, religions, classes, and castes, and aims to ensure every individual lives with liberty, equality, and dignity." This articulation helps dispel common misconceptions that label feminism as misandry or a Western concept, making her message more accessible and less confrontational to a broader audience. She actively works to dismantle the structural rigidity of patriarchy by communicating feminist concepts in multiple idioms and simple language, making complex political debates understandable to diverse groups. Beyond her literary and activist roles, Mayaa SH is recognised as a public intellectual, thinker, essayist, and social scientist. She is known for her bold expression and deep understanding of women's issues, including those considered taboo. Her work is deeply rooted in the cultural context of India, challenging the notion that feminism is solely a Western concept and asserting that Indian feminism has its own unique struggles and triumphs. She actively engages in initiatives to empower marginalised communities, promote education, and foster dialogue around critical social issues. Her ability to connect with people across various backgrounds and her charismatic personality further contribute to her fame and influence.

  • Beyond Lights, Camera, and Glamour: The Untold Story Behind ‘Good Night’ by Parag & Dipika Biswas

In an age where state-of-the art production infrastructure is available at incredibly affordable costs and at the drop of a hat, pretty faces, glamorous costumes, dreamy settings and some sweeping symphonies have become the staple ingredient not only of Bollywood movies but also short films and music videos in India these days. While some makers of short movies and music videos are minting money with these ingredients in their works, most of them are unable to make a lasting mark in the mind of the audience with their hackneyed productions as they fail to realize that before they start assembling all these ingredients for a full packaged film, the first and most crucial thing they need is a story. They miss out on the fact that to make a classic you do not need top actors from the industry. You just need a story so compelling that it doesn’t matter who’s playing the part; a story so interesting that its setting becomes an extended character; a story so engaging that you forget what equipments and components have been used to make the classic; and a story so rare that even Bollywood seems to be living off basic, rehashed versions of it as has been the case with the short film, “Good Night,” made by the We Feel Creations.  Good Night by Parag & Dipika Biswas: A Story That Outshone the Spotlight The We Feel Creations is a West Bengal-based production house, which has been working in tandem for the past few years with Stayfeatured - a highly accomplished featuring team from Mumbai & Pune comprising of creative directors Dr (HC) Prachetan Potadar and Neel Deshpande. It has produced over a hundred short films, music videos, documentaries, and TV as well as web commercials over the past 17 years. Its films have won over 250 national and international awards; they have been screened on NDTV PRIME, Dhoom Music and Kolkata TV; and many of them are currently streaming on top OTTs such as MX Player, Hungama and Airtel Xstream. “Good Night,” - a survival thriller - is one of them, in which, one night after work, Nitu, the protagonist, who is an employee at a fitness centre, is asked by her boss to complete a data sheet on her computer and then leave office. As she is doing so, she is accidentally locked inside by the office clerk, thinking that no one is inside the centre. Similarly, in the Janhvi Kapoor-starred Bollywood thriller, one night after work, the protagonist, Mili a part-time worker at a restaurant in a mall is asked by her coworkers to put some boxes in the storage freezer before she leaves. As she is doing so, she is accidentally locked inside by her manager, Sudheer Malkoti, thinking that no one is inside the restaurant.  Both in “Good Night” and “Mili,” the protagonist struggles with extreme conditions as she is frantically trying to come out of the place where she is locked. And in both films, the protagonist survives due to their cordial attitude towards “the watchman” of their respective workplaces.  In “Good Night,” the watchman could rescue Nitu because she was the only employee, who wished him good night before leaving the fitness centre every day and he did not see her come out of the centre and wish her on the day she got locked alone in the centre.  Similarly in “Mili” the search party could find Mili inside the restaurant because the watchman told the party that Mili did not leave the restaurant that day as she was the only person, who actually smiled at him before leaving the restaurant every day and he did not see her smile on her way out of the restaurant the day she went missing. While “Mili” and its original Malayalam version, “Helen,” were released on November 4, 2022 and November 15, 2019 respectively, “Good Night” was released on Pocket Films in YouTube on December 2, 2015. The film was based on a story sourced by Irfan-E-Azam and it was screened on NDTV PRIME and Dhoom Music.  The movie, which is currently streaming on Hungama, is an excellent case in point, which emphatically proves that even with mediocre actors and production quality; you can weave out a story that serves as the basis for two top-grosser of Bollywoood and Mollywood. The chief director of “Good Night,” Dipika Biswas claims that the basic and foremost ingredient of their films is a strong story-line and a unique way of telling the story. “As we work on a shoe-string budget, we can’t afford to rope in top actors, state-of-the-art infrastructure and industry standard cinematographers and editors for our works. We have to make do with average actors, cameramen, editors and equipments.  However, be it in “The Return Gift,” which won a whopping 50 awards globally or “The Terrorist,” which bagged 41 awards in India and abroad or any other film of ours, our only USP has been our story-line, our content. We have never compromised on our story for commercial purposes. Our main objective always has been to focus and work hard on giving our audiences new, interesting, strong and original stories that would keep them hooked to our films,” she said.   The 48-year-old Siliguri-based director, who has won over eighty best director awards, feels that a story is the product of “Silex Scintillans,” which in Latin means “The Flashing Flint.” “A story comes to you like a divine spark or flash of inspiration that arises from a hard, unyielding source. It occurs during a period of intense creativity and represents regeneration for a writer - a concept central to the metaphysical poets, which was first expounded by the English metaphysical poet Henry Vaughan in his 1650 collection of devotional poems by the title, “Silex Scintillans,” she said. According to Dipika, like silex scintillans, a story comes to a writer suddenly and unceremoniously. “You do not plan for a story. It comes to you naturally. O. Henry was a great story-writer not by choice, but by compulsion from his natural instinct and innate flair for weaving incredibly brilliant tales, which would come to him as a natural spark like the silex scintillans.  You may hit upon a story idea at the dead of a night or while bathing or cooking at home or driving to your workplace or buying goods from a grocery shop because you don’t plan a story idea. It occurs to you suddenly and you develop it into an engrossing narrative, a gripping script, a mesmerizing screenplay and a once in a lifetime film.  But the commercial compulsion, which denies the crucial role of silex scintillans in creativity these days and forces itself to deliver a story within a stipulated time frame and within the framework of a hit formula leads a writer to a pathetic tale or to a story already heard, watched, and outgrown by uncorking a very old wine in a shiny new bottle. It is this malaise afflicting all genres of film making these days that explains why most feature films, short movies and music videos are unable to hold the attention of their audiences or linger in their minds, despite their incredibly high production quality,” noted the winner of three national Woman of the Year awards from Dainik Jagaran and Anandadhara in 2022 and Bondhu Sobsamay in 2024 for her contribution to the Indian film industry.  But We Feel Creations is not the only production house of short films and music videos, who are concentrating on content rather than on commercial success. Dipika’s sentiments are shared by many small film-makers and production houses, whose films get a mixed response commercially, but win many accolades and critical acclaim.  The rest are following the trends set by blockbusters of Bollywood, Mollywood or Tollywood and are quite unapologetically, serving drab, repetitive, unoriginal and highly predictable stories, which they sometimes copy paste from various sources or drill a tunnel straight back into the past to get them. They ask us again and again to watch for an interesting twist or for a deja vu, and pathetically cry in a corner when called out.
