A Journey to Empower 10,000 Next-Generation Leaders: How One Corporate Leader Left a Global Career to Build a Leadership Movement

September 1, 2024.

An Emirates flight was taking off from Stockholm Airport. Sitting beside my wife, I looked out of the window as the Stockholm skyline slowly faded into the horizon.

In that quiet moment, I felt a sudden knot in my stomach and a heavy weight in my chest. The day had finally arrived—we were heading back home to India.

This was not just a relocation. I was walking away from a secure, three-decade corporate career and stepping into an entirely new chapter.

I looked at my wife. We didn’t say a word, but the unspoken question hung in the air:

Had we made a terrible mistake? Or was this simply a highly elaborate midlife crisis?

Humour aside, this decision was far from impulsive.

The idea had been building inside me for years. After spending more than three decades in global leadership roles at PwC, IBM, and Ericsson—leading large teams across India, the US, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe—I felt an increasingly strong sense of purpose.

I wanted to give back.

I wanted to share the lessons, failures, experiences, and insights accumulated over 30 years to help shape the next generation of leaders.

That vision led to the birth of Leaderion Academy in September 2024, built around a bold mission:

Empowering 10,000 Next-Generation Leaders in 10 Years.

But Leaderion Academy was never meant to be just another leadership development organisation. It was founded on two clear and unwavering principles.

The Forgotten Fulcrum: Middle Management

The first principle is simple yet often overlooked:

We focus exclusively on mid-level professionals.

Over the years, I noticed a troubling pattern. Organisations invest heavily in leadership development, but most of that investment is concentrated at the top of the hierarchy.

Meanwhile, middle managers—the true fulcrum of any organisation—are often neglected.

And yet, expectations on them keep rising.

Today’s middle managers are navigating unprecedented complexity. They are operating in a world shaped by rapid AI disruption, geopolitical uncertainty, and the challenges of managing multi-generational teams where Gen Z, millennials, and senior leaders often bring vastly different expectations and values.

The pressure is immense.

Unfortunately, many organisations continue to adopt a short-term mindset. The result is burnout, disengagement, and large-scale layoffs within middle management—something we have witnessed repeatedly over the last 18 months.

At Leaderion, we see things differently.

Middle managers are not merely operational bridges. They are the backbone of organisational transformation.

If organisations want sustainable success in the era of AI and disruption, they must invest in strengthening and elevating middle management.

The “Weekend Gym” Fallacy

The second principle challenges conventional leadership training.

We do not believe in two-day leadership workshops.

Why?

Because leadership transformation does not happen over a weekend.

Attending a two-day leadership seminar and expecting lasting change is like going to the gym for one weekend and expecting to wake up on Monday looking like an Olympian.

It simply doesn’t work.

Too often, leadership training becomes a checkbox exercise—another item for HR to complete in the annual calendar.

A few months ago, I met a professional who enthusiastically described a prestigious three-day residential leadership program he had attended.

He praised everything—the campus, the faculty, the learning environment, and the inspiring conversations.

Curious, I asked him a simple question:

“So, what changed after the training?”

He paused.

Then he admitted something profound.

“Nothing significant changed. We returned to work on Monday, forgot most of what we learned, and went straight back into the daily grind.”

That conversation reinforced everything I believed.

Real leadership development requires sustained practice, reflection, accountability, and measurable outcomes.

That is why Leaderion Academy anchors all transformation through intensive 100-Day Programs.

Because real change takes time.

Purpose in Action

Less than two years since that flight out of Stockholm, the journey has already been deeply rewarding.

Our flagship open-cohort program, Rise100, has already empowered more than 50 leaders, achieving a remarkable 92% satisfaction rating and a 96% recommendation rate.

True to our philosophy of democratizing leadership development, the program remains accessible to both individuals and organisations at an affordable cost.

Beyond the open cohort, we are seeing meaningful transformations across industries.

For a Global Capability Centre (GCC), we helped middle managers evolve into decisive communicators who could confidently engage global headquarters and stakeholders. Many participants are now stepping into larger international responsibilities.

For a high-end advisory and consulting firm operating across India and the UK, our 100-day Journey to Advisory Excellence program successfully transformed technology consultants into trusted client advisors, accelerating business growth.

In the fast-evolving print media industry—where digital disruption and AI are rapidly reshaping business models—our Lead360 program enabled managers to rebuild confidence, manage uncertainty, and develop clear execution strategies that directly influenced revenue growth.

These outcomes reaffirm one simple truth:

Leadership transformation is possible when learning is sustained, practical, and deeply intentional.

A Movement, Not Just an Organisation

Looking back, I have no regrets about leaving my corporate career.

If anything, my only regret is not starting sooner.

Watching leaders gain clarity, confidence, and purpose—and witnessing the ripple effect of their transformation—has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

Leaderion Academy is far more than an organisation to me.

It is a movement.

A movement rooted deeply in purpose, service, and impact.

It is anchored in one core belief:

Making a positive difference in every individual’s life by being fully present.

The journey has been beautiful.

And the journey continues.
