  • What's Wrong with Self Promotion? - Amrita Valan

What do people have against self-promotion? Especially people who don't write, perform any of the arts or paint themselves? Why do they criticize self-promotion? I want to disseminate what I write. I want a wider audience than my Facebook wall can provide. If the groups I post in allow it, what axe do such folks have to grind here? It is not spam, it's not mindless advertising, it's my labour of love provided free of cost for your enjoyment and my greater visibility! How does it affect this self-appointed brigade of people? Isn't this attempted censorship? Isn't it co-opting the promotion of the arts? That any recognition that you get should come through proper 'official' channels only? That smacks of bureaucracy and red tape at best, nepotism and hegemony at worst. Someone inboxes me, that it excites jealousy. I am advised not to show overt enthusiasm in acknowledging acceptances. How is your jealousy, my problem friend? Do you think I'm incapable of jealousy? I am an adult. I can control my momentary envy. I can rise higher than my petty instinct, to recognise the hard work and achievements of others. Please don't scare me with your jealousy. Please allow my growth through the promotion of my own poems and stories. Self-publishing is actually self-promotion. If you're ok with that, you should be ok with this. My writes stand on their own merit for the likes of others. You need not like it if you're so annoyed that I dared to promote myself in any other place but my Facebook wall post. But who are you, to decide and determine where a person should promote herself? What is wrong with promotion exactly? Some say it is personal promotion, and in bad taste. My friends, I am not promoting Amrita, the person, but the work, a poem, a painting or a story. Which falls under the aegis of Art. And Art is universal. As for taste, good or bad, my work is bound to be linked to my name, so if you like my work, you may come back to read more. This is not personal promotion to aggrandize oneself, but to find acceptance, a niche for one’s work. It is common sense. If I am promoting my ink in an unsuitable group, say Science and Astronomy, Cooking or buying and selling of consumer goods or real estate, that would be objectionable and disagreeable But, surely in a group that showcases poetry, painting, memoirs recollections, opinion pieces humour et all, it is perfectly natural? All the great groups of internationally published writers I belong to on Facebook encourage every one of its members to Share! Share! And Share! To promote their talent to showcase their work. Everywhere I submit my work I am actually instructed to promote on Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, my own pages and yes all the groups that allow it, groups with similar interests, content and theme. Are such esteemed and experienced littérateurs wrong? Why look down your noses on self-promotion then? If you say it commercializes art, oh! don't make me laugh, please! One individual sharing her labour of love, or her published articles cannot possibly open the floodgates of commerce. Every anthology published tries to break even. If it makes a profit, then does the artwork inside die because it made a profit? And so it becomes commercializing Art? © Amrita Valan 2021

  • Revealed! Abhishek Nigam’s fitness secret, know what keeps ‘Hero’ fit

    1. What does fitness mean to you? To me, fitness means being happy from within and feeling healthy. No matter what activity you do, be it running or exercising, it is bound to make you fitter if it gives you a sense of satisfaction. The body must be free from diseases and any extra amount of fat or cholesterol, and I strongly believe that the person who feels healthy and is super-charged is always fit. 2. How do you keep a healthy balance between your mind and your body? I always try to keep a tab on the portion of whatever I eat. A healthy and balanced diet is crucial as our bodies need several nutrients to stay fit, 3. Following your demanding and hectic routine, how do you manage to stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle? I always keep my diet according to my workload and schedule and never try to maintain any hardcore diet for my fitness. I give my body the right amount of fuel it needs. Whenever I am shooting an action sequence, I fuel myself with a heavy breakfast and lunch and, more importantly, keep my body hydrated by drinking lots of water. 4. What is your ideal workout regime? For me, an ideal workout is something that charges me up and energizes me to the fullest, other than making me tired. I generally don’t work out daily since I have a very hectic schedule at shoots. It is 3-4 days a week that I try to catch up with my workout session. I believe in an effective workout and try to efficiently follow it rather than working out for longer sessions. 5. Your roles require you to maintain a fit body, what did you incorporate in your fitness regime? Before this show, I used to do more weightlifting and body-building workouts. In my current role in the fit as show Hero-Gayab Mode On, I am playing a stuntman and I need to look fitas an athlete. Hence, I have incorporated skipping, cardio and running, martial arts, and acrobats, which helps me cut lots of fat from my body. 6. Any quick healthy snack that you rely on during your busy days? A quick healthy snack for me is my Protein bar and a Protein shake. Sometimes, I love Pani-Puri and I can’t resist it. (laughs) 7. What kind of music do you like listening to while you work out? I like upbeat music and adrenaline rushing music during the workouts. 8. What motivates you towards fitness? I don’t feel the need for any motivation to remain fit. Staying healthy means that a lot of medical expenses can be taken care of (laughs). Being fit for me is very necessary, and everyone should realize its importance on their own, instead of someone else motivating you. 9. Any Fitness tips for your fans? The only tip for my fans is to everything they desire but always in control. One should always eat according to the workload and daily schedule. Devanshi is a 33-year-old woman, married for 7 years and a mother of 4 years old baby. She was a scholar in her college days and was the first to land up with a lucrative job. She was intelligent and was doing so well in her professional career but ended up quitting the job after she gave birth to a kid. Reason? There was nobody to support her in looking after her baby, nor was any work from home option available to her. Many of you would have gone through this phase of life; taking the tough decision of quitting a job for the sake of your family. It is a story that syncs with the lives of many women. Every human being has to go through a phase of transition in his/her life. • Transforming Pre-Engineered buildings, APL Apollo unveils Apollo Column

Bringing in a paradigm shift towards high performance materials in structural engineering, APL Apollo Tubes Limited (APL Apollo), one of the leading branded steel tubes manufacturers, has unveiled Apollo Column, a range of black hollow steel sections (HSS) that gives a futuristic edge to construct structures of any design and elevation. A game-changer in construction, Apollo Column encompasses India’s largest range of square hollow steel sections ranging from 150X150mm to 300x300mm in size. It also offers flexibility in sizes, design, uniform strength and much higher torsional strength. Considered as the heart of Pre-Engineered Building (PEB), Apollo Column is the perfect choice for every construction due to its high weight-bearing capacity and enhanced construction speed. “As the engineers and architects have become more aware about the use of HSS in construction, they have gained considerable significance in construction of Pre-Engineered buildings. Particularly Apollo Columns are very efficient sections and their major benefits are Availability of widest range of section sizes in higher grades inherent with perfect engineering properties. Apollo Column range has emerged as an irreplaceable member of structural buildings due to its high load bearing capacity and strength-to weight ratio.”-Mr. Sanjay Gupta, CMD, APL Apollo Apollo Columns are best suitable building materials for residential, commercial as well as infrastructure projects. Superior quality, sturdiness, and ease of bending, punching and drilling altogether give Apollo Column a distinct competitive edge. Widely used in industrial building, warehouses, multi-storey buildings, commercial centres, foot overbridges, fuel stations and parking shelters in a big way. Moreover, the use of the Apollo Column significantly reduces the overall project cost as the use of HSS sections against built-up sections brings a significant reduction in weight which reduces the cost of transportation and erection. Even the hollow sections have 30-40% less surface area which saves on the cost of paint as well. Consequently, the use of the Apollo Column has the potential to reduce both material costs and project cost. high-performance
